Booting off PE disk is a good shout, I'll try that on Monday.

So I'm trying to convert an old Windows 2003 server hosting Exchange 2003 (yeah I know, I've migrated everything off it, just making sure I have a plan B just in case I've missed anything...) but even if I disable the Information Store service Disk2VHD just randomly stops, no errors, nothing in the logs etc. Is there an off-line tool I can use to capture a vhd(x) file for Hyper-v on Windows 2012r2 rather than doing it live? Another vote for PDQ here, I use it for all my software distributions including AirServer (just done the update to the new version with it today). Modified the itunes distribution to install Bonjour and stop all the apple updates, then installed 2015 and Airserve. Took about 2 mins. Love PDQ, best management tool I have bought this year by miles Andrew

Hi For the past 5 years I've run my own self managed wireless network starting with the old Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 flashed to DD-WRT before upgrading them a couple of years ago to the faster WHR-HP-GN. Just starting to think about upgrading the access points again (although no real performance issues with the current kit), what would people recommend as a decent wifi access point these days? Ideally it would need to run DD-WRT firmware but I'm not tied to any specific manufacturer etc. I've got about 50 to potentially replace... Thanks as always Andrew

If you have your own web caching on-site (Smoothwall, squid, dansguardian et al) then I suggest you contact them to opt out of using their cache farm and have your proxy server IP set to run straight through. We did it a couple of weeks ago and our service has been flying ever since. Some of my teachers even bought me cake so great is the "new" service.....

I think there must have been an article in The Guardian or TES recently about this as I had a request last week to bring in a "work life/well being" period after a teacher's partners school tried to bring it in. The polite answer was no but I did suggest if staff wanted they could use "options" and "Delay Delivery". Not something I'd turn on even if it was feasible, it would cause chaos on snow days, emergencies, over night alarms etc

Going to go for the 210's as they will only be running Excel their entire life, just checked in a case and appears to be plenty of room both sides of the slot, worst case I'll disable the front USB slots by taking out that cable. Thanks for that, looks ideal. Excuse my nievity on this as I rarely do hardware, the spec of the card says PCI-e 2.0 whereas the motherboard spec on the X275's says PCI-e 1.1 Is that going to be a compatibility issue or will it work fine all be it a bit slower? Cheers Andrew

Sat in the back garden in the New Forest, miles from any street lights and watched it from 3am-4am. Absolutely beautiful, and as a bonus in the darkness, millions of extra stars out that you can only really see when in the shadow, especially facing south towards Orion that had just started to rise above the horizon.

As the title says, I'm looking for about 6 of the above cards for some Acer Veriton X275's that I need to run dual screens on. Preferably VGA and DVI but could run HDMI with an adaptor. Any resellers lurking on here got anything suitable (cheap and cheerful appreciated) or does anyone have any suggestions. It's for finance and HR so blistering games performance not an issue. Hi I built my spare server this morning to document the process (might be getting another couple soon...) 1) Boot from SPP on USB stick and update firmware as prompted (2 on my server) and reboot 2) Boot from Windows 2012R2 USB install stick and install Windows 3) Post install, insert SPP USB stick and run launch_hpsum.bat 4) Install missing HP drivers (17 on my server) as prompted by SPP and reboot 5) Enjoy near silent server 6) Run Windows Updates (130 when I checked this morning...) Hi We've rolled out AirServer to all our IWB PC's this week and the response from teachers has been fantastic. Lots of departments already using some great apps in lessons. We have one teacher who has an ipad, swears blind he put in the right password but his AirPlay settings just constantly flash, reload or just won't connect. His iphone in the same room connects fine, as does mine. Wifi receiver is in the same room, perfect signal and everything is on the same WAN etc. Is there a way to reset the AirPlay settings on an ipad without resulting to factory defaults or a large hammer? Just need to clear the connection settings that are obviously saved somewhere for this one device so we can start again. Thanks as always Andrew

I can't remember specifically. What I did was explode the iso onto a USB stick, then run the installer in Windows (about 10 news drivers were automatically installed after it had done it's hardware analysis) and once the server had rebooted back into Windows, shut it down and rebooted from the USB stick. That loads a linux environment that then installed another 6 firmware drivers for various on board kit. When that had finished, the reboot was about 70db quieter...

Hi The SPP gets re-released approx every 3 months but TBH I haven't re patched my servers firmware/drivers since April other then the usual Windows Updates. There has been very few changes to the ISO in that time. For me, it falls in the not broken, don't fix it category. As for recommending the servers? I have 2 running the school CCTV system, very heavy load and they have yet to drop a packet. Very pleased with them, as workhorses and file servers they are excellent for the price. Unfortunately, not really played with VM on them so although I know it installs, I haven't any real world experience as to how they would perform. HTH Andrew

Hi all Does anyone have a working reg file to set IE11 proxy, preferably setting a proxy.pac file? No idea why but my GPO has stopped working and I'm struggling to find a reg example specifically for proxy.pac Any help in stopping me reinventing the wheel greatly appriciated Yours slowly going mad...
