  1. I know very little about DNS, well i but i have question. If i have a workstation XPPro called computer01 i check the DNS record and its in there. When i rename the PC to PC01 then i get the PC01 record in there as well as the computer01 record? How should this work, i now have 2 DNS records with the same IP address but with the two different computer names. Should DNS know this and update itself? Should it be left to me to manually delete the old record/ Surely not? Can you manually delete the records? Howe can i stop this happening? What is the correct way to deal with this?
  2. Have you tried manually deleting all your leases and then let the machines log back ina recreate their lease?

  7. How much data does the tapes hold? I heard this LTO mentioned today by one of the LEA techies and I'd never heard of it
  8. Did you RIS the ghost image or use the NEWSID tool form Sysinternal to make sure all the imaged PC's get new SIDs. Can't remember 100% but this jogs my memory to a similar problem in a primary school that had these issues and it was due to the images not being correctly ripreped before imagining.
  9. Now i know very little about Sims so bear with me. I went to a primary today that the SIMS support team had upgraded FMS today. I went in at short notice because i had reports of some of the FMS modules not working, It turned out that the reason ws because the march Sims.net upgrade had not been done. When this was done later it all worked well....................not. I was told to run Sims.net then it would upgrade the workstation which it did. In turn this let me then run FMS and it launched OK. Before the sims.net workstation upgrade the FMS launched but with errors. Now on a couple of machines this worked OK but on another couple it came up with an error that the user did not have admin privileged and the sims.net upgrade needed to be done by a admin. This threw me as none of the other 2 users were admins. I can't understand why this happened. What should the security be on the 'program files/sims 'folder to enable this to be done? In fact could someone tell me what the default permission should be set at on the workstation and how it is done? Can it be done in GPO through file access security setting? Please help me understand the sims workstation install/security as i have no knowledge.

  12. My contract is up next week and i am thinking of getting a new phone. I was thinking of having a Samsung D900 but i guess this phone has been out a while now so there must be better. I have heard a lot of people raving about the Sony W8** series of phones but i am not after a phone for its Walkman like uses as i have a iPod fr that. I'd like a decent camera, good battery life, robust, etc I would quite like one with a Windows OS but would not know where to start to look for one. Any suggestions?
  13. One of the schools i visit is still using MS Proxy Server 2.0. Yes i know its ancient but to be honest all they use it for is monitor usage, ban websites etc, it does not do any other function as its all done by the LEA. I was asked to pop in today to check why the reports where not working now. Well i had a look at the summary folder and checked the reports. They open in IE but not information is shown, it shows all the headings etc ie; web sites visit, top users but no data. Now i went back to some old reports of around 4-6 months ago and the same is happening to them and i know for a fact that these all worked fine back then. Also these reports go back 3 years or more and now no longer show any data just headings. Does any one have any idea what is going on?

  21. I have just watched a small blogcast on DFS and how to set it up. I was very interested in this regarding our home directories. We all need 100% up time and this has given me ideas. I have a server which holds all the home directories for all the school, if this dies we are fubar for a few hours/days but with DFS would this not be the case. As understand it (and i am prob wrong) If i set the current path for the home directories for the first site name in DFS then could i point to another server with the same folder named shared and set it up as siteb? If so as soon as the two are linked will it replicate what is on site a to site b? Or have i git it totally wrong?
  22. I have just watched a podcast on How to Add a Second IP Address in Windows 2003. I just wanted to ask you all a question regarding this. On our internal network we have 512 ip address available for lease. We are now currently near the limit. As my experience has grown over the last few years and so with it the size of our network I have realised that I need to change certain configurations to expand our network. I have used reserved IP address's for all our network printers and I also reserve the ip address's of the switches as well from our range. I have seen found out from reading that we do not need to use the range ips from our network for this. So after watching a blogcast has given me a good idea to solve it. If I give my Print Server a second IP of say 192.168.1.1 this will give me over 200 hundred ip's to use just for our printers (which I doubt will ever get up to) If I then give all my printers address's from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.255 will this work correctly. I presume I have no need at all to give my other servers a second IP in the same range. Also would I need to add the IP range to my reverse look up zones in DNS? I all is correct above could I do the same for my switches and just give my workstation a second ip on the same range that I will use for my switches. Many Thanks
  23. Have a look here his is a new position, which moves the role from an academic to a strategic responsibility - the Director of Computing Services will be responsible for both strategic and operational IT. In addition to leading the IT team, the Director will operate alongside the senior team, ensuring that both the educational and administrative needs of the School are met. As well as having a sound technical knowledge of IT systems, the successful candidate will have held a senior IT role in education or business. The ability to create an IT strategy and lead staff in the implementation of the IT vision will be critical, as will having a proven track record of project delivery. Closing Date 4th May
  24. I have seen both CMiS ePortal and SiMS used for this and both seem to work very well. My own preference would be ePortal but to answer your questions i would need to find out more details of what each individual school does.
