  1. Its that time of year again when i am getting asked to measure up rooms to be used as possible ICT rooms. I cover around 7 Primary schools and ill end up with this request from most of them. I end up having to go into classrooms, measure the room allowing for doors and other obstacles then work out how many desks can fit in or how many benches can be used to give the maximum number of computers possible. What I'd like ot do it go and measure all theses rooms first then sit and create drawings showing the measurements and also where i would put tables/benching etc. I could then print out a couple of options for each room and school to show fitted benching or flat pack desking options. Does anyone know of any software i can use free to do this> The easier to use the better. I don't need Fancy 3D stuff(although it would be nice :-) )Something i guess like a cut down version of the software they use to give you a idea of your new kitchen layout etc.
  2. Checked the GPO and classic style- not that Checked the Default user profile on the PC-not that. NOt sure if there is a default user profile on the netlog share, will have to get back to you on that one.
  3. So to clear something up for me, if the pupil owns the cd, rips a track or tracks to mp3 and brings them in on USB pen to then save to the network for using in presentations is this illegal. On what AUP or ICT policy can this be enforced. I don't liek the use of mp3 in anyones directory but i would love to know how others completely ban them.
  4. I have been to a new school today that i normally do not attend. I had to create a few new staff users and noticed that all staff have roaming profiles. What i am unsure about is that when i logged onto test the accounts the user automatically get the old win2000 desktop and toolbars and not XP. Could someone explain to me why this could be happening?
  5. I have been looking into Joomla over the last few weeks and must admit i am impressed with it. I have watched Sysmans post and all his hard work to get a School Joomla template up and running and am now tempted to have a go myself. I have a few question to ask first and hope some on can answer them fo rme? 1. I have read the Joomal School template guide and feel i need to read a l little more, are there anymore tutorials about that some one can recommend? 2. Should i go ahead and start to create my site with Joomla 1.0 or 1.5. I am not sure if 1.5 is out of Beta yet and from the little i have read upgrading to 1.5 from 1.0 looks a little tricky. 3. Could Joomla be used for a complete VLE option?
  6. Just a quick question about NTBAckup and timings. If i doa full back up of say, 80gb across the network to a NAS box and it takes say, 8 hours. If i then do differentiall back up how long would that take roughly?
  7. Got a link Piqueaboo?
  8. Since the introduction of Media Studies this school year our pupils home directories size have shot up. I expected this but some of them have over 4gb in theirs ( we don't use quotas as we have very large storage) I notice that this file size seems to be very large, sometime 1.5gb for a 20 min clip. Now the Media dept have never come to us for help or advice with this and i know they use Adobe Premiere Elements for nearly all the work and all videos are avi format. Now it don't take a genius to work out they must be using unnecessary high frame videos. I need to find out and see if i can stop this happening or my very large server will soon be full. What do you do/use in this situation. Also most of our video editing is being streamed across the network as their is no local access to the c:drive?
  9. I was just wondering here you lot put your printer script in your GPO? In Computer Configuration or in User Configuration? I currently have a GPO per Room/OU, the only thing set in this GPO is a script to map the printers for the room. I know it is common Microsoft practice to turn off User or Computer config of the GPO if you are not using it. This has lead me to wonder which is the best part of the GPO config to put the script in? My script to map the printers is currently in the User Section of the Room OU. Is this correct? and also do you use a printer removal script on log off as well?
  10. Script sent
  11. How did you get on?
  12. I have a script that does this for all the computers in a domain/OU. It does this what Geoff mentionens above but then leaves a marker so that it does not run again. LEt me know if you want it and ill PM or post it here. Infact IIRC i think i had it off these forums in the first place.
  13. Yep, I've deployed it in two schools already.......another fine mess from QCA. I suppose one way would be to remove the first msi through GPO and then redeploy. (if you have the time to allow for this to make sure all computers in question have been used and restarted at least a couple of times) I think i will use a logon vbs script to check the folder exists and if it does then delete it. What do others plan to do?
  14. I was offered this too but i needed to get a degree first. This was 5 years ago now and to be honest i did not fancy the teacher role then. Still not sure now and only time will tell but i know that i do enjoy my techie role and i think teaching could be the same old same old just with different kids, at least my job is the never the same 2 days running. I suppose BSF will bite me on the ar*e and I'd have wished i had gone teacher after all.
  15. I visited a school today and was randomly check AD and found a lot of unusual groups. There is a group for each school entry ie; entry02 which contains all the students that started in sept 06. This group is called Entry02G but there is also a group called Entry02L which just contains Entry02G????? Someone told me this could be a throwback from NT4 upgraded server. TO be honest i never looked if the newer years 06 and 07 were the same as theses would have been put on while the server was 2003. Does anyone know of groups like this or is this something to do with a NT4 upgrade server.
  16. I have not posted for a while because of personal reasons but have been reading the forums when i got chance. I have followed a few posts on setting up software restriction policies on users USB sticks. I have set it using USBAdmin that all USB sticks use the letter U:. I want to block all exe from running from this drive letter. My confusions is how o stop all exe from the drive. I know in the policy i can set it to block U:\*.exe but do i need to repeat this so it covers a lotof sub folder options ie; U:\*\*.exe and U:\*\*\*.exe and so on or is there a way of doing it only once so it blocks all exe no matter what level of folder the exe is in. ( i have just read my own question and not even sure if i have answered myself with my examples) Could someone help please?
  17. I went too one of my primary schools yesterday after being called din becasue of a worry about the server. The server is a Dell Power-edge 2900 and is around 6 months old. The display light(that scrolls the words 'Power-Edge 2900@ has turned orange. I check the Openmanage software and it reported a drive error. The server has 273gb SAS drives in Raid1 mirror. One of the drives is reported 'removed' I ran the diagnostics test but they all run OK with no errors. I phone Dell 'India' Support and they suggested re-seating the drive which i did and it then on boot up reboots the drive as damaged in the BIOS but then boots up ok. The Dell support said he know wanted to run me through re-setting up the RAID again. Now i bottled it at this, i have no raid experience and with this being a mirrored OS install i did not do it. To be honest i ran out of time but also i was not convinced. Can someone help me with this, Can a RIAD be re-set up while the one RAID 1 disc is still ok Should i try other things? I also found out that yesterday the school had a whole site power cut and the UPS did not do a controlled shut down and the server just shut down Ideas?
  18. I am trying to get my head around sub-netting but not doing very well. Every time i look at examples in books and online i get in a mix. I can only really understand it better when it is relating to ip address ranges i am used to working with. I am mainly keen to find out about what to do when you use up all the ips in your range. So if you have for example 1000 ips to dish out what happens when they are all used up and more clients need address? Would some one be so kind and offer me help please to get my head round this bloody thing.
  19. I've read the paper work today from our local LEA support team which states the same as above. September onwards needs to be on 2005 SQL. I also read that we need to make sure that all work stations have Net Framework 2.0 as a minimum but 3.0 is recommended. Also something about installing the workstation software but did not read this far down the info. I'll guess I'll worry about it in early September.
  20. FreeRip is very good i find as well.
  21. Jabra here.
  22. Am i correct in thinking htat the server does not need vast hard drives to mirror?, has the only thing the server needs to be beefy in is memory? IE; would a Dual Xeon 1.6 Quad Core, 4gb m and two 15 speed 73 SAS drives be enough for 30-50 clients?
  23. I have beenreading about this today, does anybody use this for there thinclient set up?
