  1. I'm sure we were discussing this like 2yrs ago. They're a bit behind the times.
  2. I'm not that into the 1990's style re-writing everything for IE. It's inside moodle, so we just left it where it is and advised not to use IE.
  3. It's ok. We got around it by withdrawing IE support.
  4. and will it run .mp4 and webm off the bat like every other browser without having to hack in some extra code?
  5. Google apps is a much better option, it syncs with older versions of MSOffice as well as 2013 and has much stronger collaborative features than 365. We looked at the pricing for MSOffice with 365 and to get near to the functionality that Google has you really *need* the full MSOffice-sharepoint integration, ie back to the A3 plan pricing options.
  6. That just covers the TSCAL. The reason it doesn't cover office I think is to stop large schools and universities offering a web based MSOffice service, as students wouldn't buy office for their home machines. Similarly, a startup company could just rent copies of Office. MS doesn't want that.
  7. You need to buy the Terminal services remote connector license to enable students to connect: Terminal Services Internet Connector License and ASPs But this doesn't cover MSOffice. The cheapest way we could find to cover Office for students to have remote access is with the 365 A3 plan: Office 365 Academic - Office.com where you pay monthly for each student.
  8. Take care with that - you need to have the same license of MSOffice for each device that connects - ie, you need to buy one for all of your students because it's not covered by EES.
  9. They just get busted if we find out they breached it. We use the same method in cookery classes - we give the students knives, but they are not allowed to murder each other. If we find out they've been hacking each other to pieces then they get busted. easy really.
  10. School rules are you can have phone, but not use 3G.
  11. We use Centos, and deploy it using Spacewalk. The machines use a backports of the latest wireless kernel drivers and logs into a generic account which resets the profile on reboot.
  12. Linux runs our windows servers !!- it does top end virtualization for next to no money ( we pay for support ). We also use it to share files with Windows servers (faster, cheaper, better supported and more options than you get with windows) We use Linux on desktops and laptops: easy to centrally deploy, manage and maintain. We use Linux for server management, network management. Is there anything Linux doesn't do?
  13. The 16 is historic - before we vlanned, everything was 16 so rather than change the scope, we added other vlans and slowly migrated everything off the 16 subnet. The 23's are too big at 500 devices per vlan- but I don't think that matters because it's all RFC1918, it'll never get to that many devices. I could have chosen a smaller subnet, but I dont see any issue other than it looking quite big.
  14. THis is our vlan topology network topology.xlsx
  15. Thats a yes then.
  16. Whether it is or it isn't it would still be good practice to gain consent from parents and provide an opt-out method for those who choose to opt out.
  17. ok, so what I said with one AP per classroom and 100+ AP's stands true, in a windows world.
  18. So each AP is connected by 1GB link - and each 1GB link can have 1000 users on it..... hmm. I guess that proves that 10GBE is pointless for schools then.
  19. But does it have 10's of thousands of users all connected at the same time? I'm talking number of users per AP rather than coverage.
  20. I say 100+ units because to be able to have true coverage, and assuming 30 students per AP, we would need one per classroom. We currently have two classrooms per AP (120 classrooms) + about 20 other AP's for other areas = 80AP's. This gives 100% coverage over the school, but not enough for every classroom to be filled with 30 kids. We paid about 45k which over a 6yr lifespan is 0.0011% of our annual budget. £50k isn't much for a large school for a major capital investment.
  21. Well said. Are there any very large Ruckas installations >100 AP's around? The only schools I've seen it used in I was less than impressed, as it didn't seem to scale that well.
  22. There are several options: If you use SSO then you can setup an admin override to access email, for example the Moodle integration with Google apps allows an admin to log in as a student then access their email. You could have the email forwarded to a local server. You could sign up for Google Vault. It's $10 per user per year, and you only have to pay for Faculty/Staff users. Any students and non-faculty/staff users that you have on your Google Apps account can be archived for free. Retention is unlimited, but you can shorten the retention period to a specific number of days for certain users if you'd like. You can then delegate access rights to staff.
  23. as others said long press on power works for nexus (7) 4.2.2
  24. I think I'll pass.
