Zen You can have 8 Static IPs on the home version for free if you want, no throttling, actual technical people at the other end of the phone. They are not unlimited but the top package does have a 500GB cap per month which is pretty high.

Whats the best way of backup up Mac Laptops? With our Windows based ones we just use offline files to a server and backup from there. Is there a free piece of software or method to make the Mac OS X laptops act in a similar way? or something to keep the local folders in sync with the SMB share , even if its just manual. Been looking at apple script but i aint great with programming.

That depends if you want the permisions from the folder above your 'folder 1' to be on folder 1 (Usually inherited from the root of your partition). Unticking it gives you a blank canvas for your permissions. When I'm doing custom rights on special shared areas like this i normally disable inheritance.
-
My mistake it is the Security Tab, its not called Permissions. So from the security tab on the root folder (folder 1)click the advanced , change permissions, then uncheck remove 'include inheritable permissions from this parents object' Then add admins, and system to full control to full of this folder, subfolders and files. Then make users read this folder only, that will allow them into it, but not modify anything. Then on folder 2 make it so that the user can read the folder, but full control to subfolders and files only, so the actual folder cannot be modified just anything inside it can.
-
Make the root folder so the users can only read to 'This folder only' then on each folder change the permission so that user full control of sub folders and files only. You do this on the advanced -> change permissions page of the security screen.

I was speaking to the head at one of the primaries today, and she told me something i found totally bizarre. They had iPads in Reception year 2 years ago, and they kids love them. Now those kids are in Year 2 they no longer have iPads and have netbooks instead, they absolutely hate them because they have physical keys and are scared to death of them and its becoming an issue. Anybody else come across this? Suppose we have always seen computers as having physical keys, but these are of the age when touch screen is a computer, and this thing with a keyboard is a big scary monster.

To give you an idea, we pay £1400 a month for a 50Megabit leased line, they are not cheap.

Zen customer service is the best i have experienced of all the ISPs i have had to contact. Had them at home to, and were very helpful when the BT line at home developed a fault.
-
We have a Zen leased line, Zen provide a managed router, then we popped a Fortigate 200B box for the filtering/firewall between that and our network.

Do you have any visitor stats showing OS's and browser data percentage for edugeek? Just curious.

Banging my head against the wall with this one, I'm getting "SNOVA directory not found. NOVA-T6 needs to know the directory in order to run it." when trying to load Nova T6 on some workstations. Works on my workstation, on another using my same Windows and SIMS login it does not which leads me to believe its not permissions on the SIMS folder on the server or it would not work with the same login on my station. Already search the forums and non of the fixes work. Checked the NOVA.DIR file in the SIMS folder and it has the right path, and the folder it points to exists and the permissions are correct. Don't know what to do next.

Go for the Mac, its the best thing i ever did. Its just a pleasure to use and unlike any laptop i have used. £891.60 will get you a 13.3" Mac Book Air (with edu discount), its what i got couple of years ago when i did the conversion to the Mac world. Up to 12 hour battery, 128GB SSD, decent res screen, best trackpad ever, soft illuminated keyboard. If you still have some Windows only apps you need the buy Parallels Desktop for it and use Coherence mode to make the apps look like they are running within the Mac OS.

Thats about £1,000,000 worth of kit without VAT, where they hell did you get that money???

Does anybody know if Apple do a school discount on bulk buying of iPad 2's? Best price i have seen is £269 an iPad without VAT.

The reason we are all skint is down to something Nixon did back in 1971, in a very VERY simple explination. After World War 2 in 1945 it was agreed that the dollar would be linked to gold, and all other currencies in the world fixed their exchange rate relative to the dollar. This was the ‘Bretton Woods Agreement’. So in the late 40’s, 50’s and 60’s just the father would work and there could many kids in the family and they would be comfortable off just 1 wage. Then in 1971 Nixon chopped off the link between the dollar and gold. Then the US started printing money it did not have (as its not linked to anything), writing IOU’s, and the world is running on ‘fiat’ currency. Now everything becomes more expensive, but to mask this crack, in the 70’s and 80’s the Wife now gets a job as well as the husband, so the family can be as comfortable as it was the 60’s. Now we come to the 90s and 00’s, 2 incomes is not enough, so we start living off credit instead, everyone has credit cards, cars on finance to mask the crack. Now we come to 2008 to now, and all the credit has dried up, nobody else in the household can work, and well were screwed…. Only way to fix this is to link the currency to something tangible like gold again. But that’s not wanted by the people in power and even the bank of England was selling off our gold cheap to make currency look more powerful than gold.

Not really true, the Samsung Ultra PC's are in the same price bracket as the Mac Book Air. If you try on Dells web site to configure a laptop to come close to the spec of the £1700 mac book pro, guess what? It comes out not to far off and it don't have the screen res of the pro. Apple don't do models with the lower end processors like the Pentium Pro or i3, its i5 or higher. Yes they are expensive, but your not getting low spec equipment. Your getting SSD's, high res screens, high end processors, long battery life, really good to use keyboards and a trackpad thats the best i've ever used. I was very much like zag (at least in the always being a Windows user sense), until 2011 i had been an anti apple strong Windows user since the 90s, then i decided to give the Mac Book Air a try, and now i hate using Windows and these cheap Acer/HP junk. OS X on Apple hardware is just the best computer experience i have ever had once it becomes the norm and you forget the Windows habbits. Another tech in the office has seen me go a little Apple mad and bought a 2006 Mac Book Pro off eBay for £220, and even though its 7 years old, because it was top end from then its still performs very well today and now he does not use his work laptop , he uses the Mac all the time and just RDP's off it when necessary. So pay the premium for the hardware and get a long enjoyable life out of it.

Every member of staff has a laptop here, and we have fixed stations in the classrooms for the IWB's to. Has been like this for 10 years now. Staff use the laptops loads just walked into the science prep room this morning and it was like a mini IT suite, all getting resources ready.

OS X is unix based, so guessing i fall into this category. I then use a Parallels Desktop virtual machine domain joined to each site i manage.
