I was always under the aasumption that RM was a fully managed service for the most part. I have been asked to do a comparison for the school to compare what we do now, Me a NM and 2 tecs running a vanilla setup and moving over to RM as an example. You hear things like once you have RM in you are not allowed to mess with anything they are managing etc. for example we have a fully RM school down here and if anything goes wrong they have to call out an engineer, now it has taken on occasion upto 4 days sometimes longer for that engineer to arrive. In the mean time more machines have gone down and the tech there was powerless to do anything because of the managed contract.

Are you getting you list and using CTRL A and trying to delete them all? If so try deleting one at a time or in smaller batches as I had the same thing happen to me the other day. Deleting them in smaller batches and individually sorted it.

This is what I simply do not understand and probably never will until I am in this situation. If you are using a managed solution, what else is there to do all day everyday? Network Managed by X, desktops managed by X, Servers Managed by X. There is myself here and 2 guys under me, we are busy all the time. What do people who have a fully managed solution do all day? I do not mean this to come across as a flame or as an accusation I am truely interested.

Regardless of if there is just you supporting the network the school would still have to pay both you AND RM, so surely thats a downside. Even if you go on to do something else the school still have to pay you the 2k. It's not as if ythey school don't have to pay you the 2k but pay it to RM so there is no saving there. what about this for example: I want to put a new server on my network. Costs Vanilla - Cost of server for a cheapy one say £900. Time take is irrelevant as I am being paid by the school on a wage anyway so the cost is fixed. No additional cost for any outside company to do it. Cost of Hardware: £ 900 Cost of Setup: £ see total Cost of Install: £ see total Cost of Support: £ Say 2k like russ. Cost of Outside Contractor Like RM: £0 Total £2900.00 RM Cost of Hardware : £ ? Cost of Setup: £ ? Cost of Install: £ ? Cost of Support: £? Cost of paying my wage on top : 2000.00 Total: £ ? Thats what we are looking for

Sorry but I would have to leave as you can not be expected to manage a network like that. Infact it's not really managing anything really.

So you don't run your own AD then? I just tell staff that I can not see their password, I just change it and force them to change on log on.

They don't fall off if you put them up right We test it by hanging on it, if it can take Jake and myselfs weight on it it is never going to come down.

Why then do teachers need the facility to install software, the laptops are owned by the school, they are provided for work purposes only and not as free personal laptops and come with all the software required for teachers to do their work on. There is no arguement in my eyes.

Same issue here really, we have a moodle server under construction and I decided to get aa department to test it for me to see how they get on. After spending 3 hours showing them through the VLE all aspects of course creations and other modules they say "Can't we stick up a link to MEtro Electro and be done with it?". Grrrr......no you are meant to design content for it for the pupils, "when are we going to have time to do that". VLE's will just become an expensive white elephant because most teachers will not create content. I report directly to the Director of Business and Finance not the ICT Co-ordinator which is a good thing as the ICT Co-ordinator does not know how to turn on his pc.

We use Lanschool here for classroom control. Allows for full colour screenshots to be taken, tiles the screens on teacher machine, allows teacher to transfer files, broadcast to students screens, re-broadcast the students screens, switch of students screens and black internet access as well as much much more. You can set it to certain channels so that the teacher controls only the room they are in and then have a special channel like in my office where I can view every screen in every channel. Awesome.

Tbh no users on a network should have administrator access on a network other than the administrators. If you do that you are leaving youself open to a whole world of hell.

Thats just absurd, SMT should not be left to make decisions on Network Security, thats what I get paid for. Decisions should always be placed in the hands of people who fully understand the implications of those decisions, which I am afraid most SMT members do not.

Must be a different structure then between Hants EA and Portsmouth. Stupid really, I would have thought Hants Lea would have governance over Portsmouth LEA
