Time to pick your brains What do you do and how do you embed ICT across the curriculum. We have a real problem here where there is a distinct lack of vision by curriculum staff as to ICT and how it can enrich their lesson plans. A lack of vision on facilities and services required helping them to teach and making ICT integral to the curriculum exists. At the moment the equipment is just being used as glorified word processors. What have you installed on the network to aid Cross Curricular ICT^ development or what do the teachers at your school do. I am in a position to facilitate change and I would be interested to see what other schools do. So hit me with your ideas and schemes that fall outside of the more mundane DHCP and Fileserver regulars Thanks in advance.

We use backup Exec v10 and a HP Ultrium 3 which uses 800g tapes.

Don't set quotas on the Default Domain Policy and setup seperate group policy objects and apply them to ou's thus leaving the Adm,in account with no restrictions?

I buy/repair/replace for the whole school, although if work/parts are required because of vandalism then that gets billed to the departments.

I have uploaded an export of our extensive ISA block list for anyone to use. It contains all google sites excluding .co.uk and .com. It also blocks the Google personalised page but beware, if the pupil has selected personalised homepage then they wont be able to access google. You would need to build in to your logon script a bit of code to delete the google cookie everytime they log in and that solves it. Easy to find the code using google. Coming from a Microsoft network, you will be used to security by obscurity. Nothing to do with security by obscurity why would anyone want that info freely available to any unscrupulous hacker thats out there.

Thats the thing, I don't hate Linux, I think it has it's equal place amongst OS's it has positives and negatives. What I hate is people who allow their hatred of EVERYTHING Microsoft to cloud their judgement and cause them to make biased opinions of MS Software. Windows 2003 Server - - Never had an OS crash since using it since launch. Windows Vista -- another hot potato never had any problem with it at all, using it both here at work and at home. Never had any problem getting drivers and programs to work on it. Linux Unbuntu -- Run a server at home for playing around with, never had a problem with it. Maybe I am just brilliant at setting up networks and installing OS's

I understand that, but bold claims Like Windows is inferior to Linux need supporting evidence to ever be taken seriously. Your claim that programs are becoming more reliant on Linux is not true either. I am really seriously trying to understand where these claims that Linux is better than windows comes from and is not just born out of hatred of Microsoft. You say .... I think it's a pipe dream of Linux users to believe that one day everyone and his dog will use Linux as it will not happen, why move (as a user) from a system that is easy to set up and ituitive to use to a system that is frankly not? Cost? Everything costs in life and you get what you pay for. Exploits? Recent reports show that Linux has more 'Holes' in it than Windows OS.

Is there anyone on this board who uses a 100% Linux Network, i.e there is not one machine/Laptop etc belonging to the school that uses windows. If so how do you find it. In the great Windows vs Linux arguement I keep finding Linux advocates that just hate windows regardless and blindly slate anything to do with it. When you counter back that big business' use Windows a hell of a lot compared to Linux they say "no they don't" or "Thats because they are to stupid to use Linux" or "Windows is unreliable and crap" now bearing in mind that the IT Directors get paid 6 figure salaries in these big companies and reliability is a fundimental issue I find it hard to believe that these statements are true. So the question is does anyone use a completely Linux system and dish out your pro's and cons of either system. Thanks

You are just being pedantic now, you know exactly what I was on about, Windows do not make routers when I said core network fuctionality I was refering to Dhcp, Filesharing, user accounts etc. @OP Any news?

Assuming Apache = *nix is exactly that, an assumption, we are running Apache here, on a windows 2003 Server. My point about big business is not directed to the interent it is directed at core networking and I am afraid to say that most Very Large Business use Windows for their core network functionality.
