I'm currently in a RM to Vanilla migration. Existing Network RM CC4, Windows Server 2008 R2. I've added a new vanilla Server 2016 DC to the domain, created Windows 10 Policies and clean installed windows 10 on a PC and linked policies in GPO. All OU's are still as before but new policies are security filtered only for windows 10 PCs. Plan is once all clients are on Windows 10, to then did-assemble the 'establishments' OU and break this separate into separate computer and user OU's and re-link policies. Seems to work fine with creating windows 10 profiles, no issues so far. This means a simple migration, Windows 7 RM pcs can continue with existing policies etc, and then any new windows 10 pcs will use the new GPOs and settings.

All I can say is Brave move!

What issues in particular? I've never run VMware (Although inherited networks using it) and always used and converted to Hyper-V and never had an issue.
-
Especially if it's a Dell - Unless their reliability has improved over the years! Quite happy with some of my 7+ year old HP servers out of their 3 year warranty still performing as necessary without a drive or any kind of hardware failure. I have trust in them.

SANs have never, or will ever be on my list of hardware. if your going for full redundancy it's your Single point of failure of your entire network unless you have 2. I've inherited networks before where theres been 2 hosts, 2 switches, all cross linked for host/nic/switch redundancy but if the SAN failed, what would you do?! Let alone seeing them configured in a raid 5. I'll be staying with physical servers and local storage, at least if you lose a server you only lose part of your network, utilizing DFS and replication, redundancy is there. TBH all SANs i've inherited, they've always split the entire array of drives into 2 raid 5 volumes and performance is no where near that of physical drives local to servers.

So i have some 2016 servers where when a particular event ID is generated I want to receive an email with the full details of the event. I have created a powershell script assigned to the ID so I get a notification email, but only with the content I enter in the script. I'd then have to check the event log for the details. I'd like to have the email either contain or attach the full details of the event ID. Any scripting people out there able to help? Thanks.

SSO is a big issue - staff hate multiple logons to different sites but i'd rather keep everything separate for security.

Forgive me if i'm wrong but how do you enforce complexity on SIMS passwords? From what I can tell SIMS passwords are not even case sensitive (YET)!

Hi, Dummy user: Ben Smith (username smith b) In ad our user email addresses are [email protected] and logon as surname initial ie smith b When creating users, both username and logon pre200 are set to be surname initial I've set up sync between Ad and Office 365 which works fine however when users are synchronized they get the default of [email protected] If i edit each user in AD for their username to be surname.forname i.e ben.smith and change the UPN to the proper DOMAIN.com and re-sync it then is correct in 365. How would i do this en mass for all users so that it doesnt have to be manually changed for all users, or for new users which are created so it can automatically set this to be in the correct format? Thanks

Appears to be sorted - I rebooted all clients, then installed office on a 6th machine, went to 'account' and it showed as activated!
-
Do I just re-run VAT and select AD Authentication rather than KMS?
-
yes, checked the DNS record lookup - all correct. If I do AD activation does it affect windows 7 and office 2013 which will need to activate in future if re-imaged?
-
I'm setting this up at another school which has this issue. Set up in the same way as at my school and it all activates fine...strange
-
I believe it's 5. Question is if it was 15 why would manually pointing to the kms server and activating work? - - - Updated - - - They were all manual installs from the original ISO

I've set up a server 2016 KMS host for Server, Windows 10 and office 2016. I have installed office 2016 on 5 clients, event log on the server shows the clients checking in. When i go into office (account) it says office needs activating. If i navigate to the office16 folder on the client, manually set the kms server and activate via command prompt it is successful and shows activated. If I then check the other installs, none are activated. I have done a nslookup for the kms entry and just shows the 1 server. Why would the other clients not be activating automatically without specifying the KMS server name, even though the request is showing the event log. as 0x0, 5

reverted back to 1709 and working again.
-
Already tried that, a repair and a complete uninstall/reinstall.

Just ran windows update on a laptop which upgraded it from 1709 to 1803 I now cannot adjust the screen brightness either in display settings or using the laptop function keys. I've removed and reinstalled the driver, and even put the basic driver on and still unable to change it. One driver results in the screen being dim all the time, the other at full brightness, How can i get it working again?

You add it to the email address policies and apply to all users, then set which domain you want to be primary for sending. users will receive on at domain but the primary one will be the from address when sending/reply. you'll also need to make sure your new domain is added as an accepted domain and all dns routing in place to route to your exchange server. We changed names a while ago - still receive on both addresses but send out on the new one.
-
I now have 2 email addresses with working across 2 schools. I want to combine both into Outlook. One is a local exchange account (primary base) and the other office 365. I can add the 365 account into Outlook as an additional account so both appear down the left hand side. However, if I send an email from the local exchange account all the emails get stuck in the outbox and don't send. Any ideas why this would be? Currently, i'm using Outlook for main email and Windows 10 Mail App for the 365 account.

It was brought to my attention today that staff have a concern over the use of Survey Monkey as it is american, and been asked about looking into alternatives. Is it correct that we would no longer be able to use it when GDPR comes into effect? If it correct that any cloud based data must be stored on EU servers even if it doesnt hold personal data - being a questionnaire its anonymous? Some services have servers hosted in multiple location, so how does this comply - if it is at least on 1 EU Server? Whats are the current rules.

The computer side is not an issue with having a new OU. it's the user side, as need to keep all users in existing OUs but have different policies for widows 7 and windows 10 pcs so looking for the best way to do this.
-
So on Delegation tab I have Authenticated uses with BOTH Read and Apply Group Policy - is that correct? On Security, I add in the 'staff' group so it only applies to staff users, but does that need both Read and Apply group Policy options ticked too?
-
If I have both Authenticated users and the security group set, does Authenticated users have to have different settings to the security group, i.e Allow Read but not Apply Group Policy ?
-
Thanks - must be why it wasn't working before as I found forums online saying to add 64 bit! Seems to be working now for all users that logon to test. 7 unaffected. Now I just need to know how to link a staff and a student policy to the computer OU so it filters based on which type of user is logged on if you can help please?
