    E-Safety workshop

Our (Lincs) LA employ a person who spends his time wandering from school to school doing just that. Have you asked / poked the safeguarding persons at your LA/Council?
  2. Interestingly, we've just been having the "can we alter the gender lookups on SIMS to include options other than male/female?" discussion (you can't, AFAICT). Mainly 'cos at some point we'll have someone with "dunno/undecided/etc" as an option on their joining docs and it'd be good to have a third option. This will of course cause the census to explode.
  3. Microsoft has a HTML5 RDP client in preview IIRC, but it needs Server 2016 as the RDS server. https://www.petri.com/microsoft-releases-preview-of-remote-desktop-web-client https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/clients/remote-desktop-web-client-admin
  4. What's the SLA? How quickly can they respond? Do they have an on-call rota for out-of-hours? How much time are you getting for what you're paying (say in a breach situation)? Does initial cost (getting all the ducks in a row) cost more or less than ongoing costs (keeping things ticking over nicely)? Are they spending time on-site, or is it going to be done via email / phone? Do we have a specific person assigned to our account? What are the DPO <> client ratios (for same reasons as above)? Is this a new service they're offering? If so, how many people at $supplier can provide this service? Is there adequate holiday cover, so you don't run into "er.....Bob's off skiing" problems. Does it include (at least) annual audits? I'd also check out the suppliers to see if they (as a company) walk the walk.
  5. Investigate what's causing the deadlock - there's reports (xml_deadlock_report) in SQL Management Studio that'll give you info on what (or who) is causing it: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/31280.finding-and-extracting-deadlock-information-using-extended-events.aspx Assuming there's N+1 humans in the building, are they trying to have adventures in SIMS even though you've scheduled an outage? Do you have any other SIMS components (Discover sync task, SIMS Service Manager) or third-party software (Groupcall sync, cashless catering software) trying to access the database?
  6. Hi PTide, This was documented as a known issue in the release notes for 2.0, so I assumed there'd be a KB article expanding on that. Instead I found a 7-page thread with people being asked to open support tickets. Other vendors I deal with would have issued general guidance (try X or Y, see this KB article, open a ticket if that still doesn't help) before the thread got that long if they knew what the fix is most of the time.
  7. Can you configure it just to listen on the internal interface, only accept connections from your monitoring box and use snmp v3 to secure it?
  8. I'm testing moving our monitoring server backups from Bacula to Veeam, but the high churn rate (rrd files) was causing the snapshot to grow too large and the backup fails with snapshot overflow messages. The fix (for me, YMMV) was to open /etc/veeam/veeam.ini and edit the following line: portionSize= ...by doubling the bytes value (as a starting point). The value is calculated at install time, but if your server has a lot of data changing (rrd files were the culprit for me) it may be too low. Found here: https://forums.veeam.com/veeam-agent-for-linux-f41/snapshot-overflow-t36609-90.html after some helpful person reposted the guidance they'd received from support. Less helpful were the Veeam employees who took the "ooh, it's really tricky, contact support" stance then admitted it's usually not that tricky.
  9. For official communications? InTouch. When we actually want a nice html newsletter / mailshot? Mailchimp free tier.
  10. Given the increased cost of an iDevice, wouldn't this reduce opportunities for parental engagement for poorer families?
  11. This. Needs sign-off in writing for audit trail. (edit: and they need to have signed AUP(s)) Otherwise, I'm giving random members of the public access to the school network and data, which I'm not authorised to do.
  12. No real policy, just peer pressure that enforces "in the interest of office harmony use headphones if N+1 people are in the room". I assume you've already asked them to use headphones? We'd nip that in the bud pretty sharpish.
  13. Still interested in these: 7 x 2530-24G-PoEP - J9773A (around 2 years old)
  14. I think (can't find the thread) it was a generic title / thumbnail applied to all kids, rather than individual photos. Say school badge = kid.
  15. Someone on here was looking into identifying students vs staff on Google not so long ago. I can't remember the poster but IIRC their solution was to display a profile image / thumbnail / text label(?) for all student accounts so it was really easy to tell "Mr Joe Bloggs" from "Joe Bloggs 7B"
  16. On our setup (just down the road from you), we just have our gates/doors linked to the fire alarm without any other emergency button. The one location where you could (theoretically) get locked in is connected via intercom to a desk that's manned from 8am > 4:30. Do you have an emergency button for the doors and a fire alarm call point in the same corridor? If so and you removed the emergency button, would your kids just hit the fire alarm instead?
  17. ^ Yeah that. "We're a 24/7 shop who can't afford any downtime" quite often becomes "Er, Sunday afternoon would be fine" when you tell them how much 24/7 redundancy costs.
  18. Is something resetting the key? GPO? I assume you're flipping off WiFi to test it before you send him home to test?
  19. Step 01: Schedule some downtime.
  20. We ran PaperCut NG for years and we simply upgraded it to MF as part of a new contract. We made it a point of purchase / contract that we wouldn't be paying £750/throw for KM to do it every time there's a MF point release. It can be retro-installed, but KM will charge you for the work and the charge will very likely be higher than if you rolled it into a new contract. Twist your account manager's arm. Yes. Works well. Yes. When we last renewed the copiers we made PaperCut MF part of the contract. Our account manager did make a half-hearted attempt at getting us to try the KM solution, but was undermined by the tech guy saying "nah, use PaperCut MF it's much easier". Be aware the "software support" line item doesn't include them doing upgrades, security fixes or anything like that - that's all chargable if you want KM to do it. We do it ourselves after their tech support confirms they've tested the release and they're happy. If KM are being daft or having squabbling internally, PaperCut (the company) themselves are very helpful. MF is essentially NG, with a need to ensure copier compatibility/support before upgrading.

  22. We happily have an office junior, so they're doing it in batches. If we didn't have one.......
  23. Inertia, plus no-one wants to be responsible for processing the backlog.
  24. Accident forms are paper and filled in by the first aider. The office junior scans them to PDF and attaches them to the pupil record under medical notes.
