hi All After this summer we have really strange behaviour on some of windows 7 machines. Suddenly pupils when log in don't get their documents (they sit on the server), the mapping for documents drive is greyed out and when trying to access it, error message comes up. Documents from start menu just show local public files and that is it. When they move to different computer, all is fine. I have spotted that if I login with an admin account I can't access student home folders, access denied - from not affected computers it works just fine. At the moment we just reinstall windows (WDS comes really handy) and that cures the problem. Event log on the affected machine shows errors for folder redirections, can't find specified path. Anyone had something similar or seen it or know resolution. It is not huge problems, just one computer here and there. Just would like to find what is wrong It is windows domain, servers on win 2008r2, all students machines are windows 7, mandatory profiles and folder redirections. We have here roaming profiles and had that for pupils as well, but soon changed to mandatory for kids. Staff have docs, pics, music, favourites and desktop redirected and roaming profiles - but this can grow to huge size - for example iplayer for some reason store downloaded file in profile - so it can take a while to logon teacher to computer he never used. Pupils had roaming profiles but when suddenly 5 ICT suites starting to logon, network was slowing down and servers were mega busy - meaning bit longer logons. Printers were playing up as well, so mandatory profiles and that was sorted. We as well moved all staff documents and profiles to different server, to speed things up. Seems to be working fine now We were thinking about redirecting start menu and desktops to read only folder but for time being we are going to postpone in, but it is not bad idea

Update Got it working, we sent request to open ports 80 and 443 for address neopost gave us plus to allow ICMP requests (ping) to go through. Than accidental I have removed proxy settings from franking machine and it worked. Still not sure why it does not need proxy settings, but hey, it works !!!

Would you say that in comparison to wap54g linksys those are performing better? Rep from local supplier is coming to talk to us about unifi and they offered free survey, so very interested seeing those prices.

Hi Guys, For some reason I cannot access properties of SIMS database in SQL studio manager, I get error in picture. I found some instruction with taking ownership of database, but quite reluctant to do it, not sure how whole sims would take it. Anyone had that problem before?

I have tried connecting it to my home broadband and it is working absolutely fine there, just not in school. The problem with printing from website, you do not get discount, you need additional scale, you need to print using normal printer on sticky labels, etc. Franking machine does it all in one and much faster.

Hello all School decided that they don't want to buy stamps ever so often, as you can print post labels on franking machine. So, franking machine (from NeoPost) arrived, static ip assigned + proxy (we got those from LA) + firewall opened for requested ports - and it does not work !!!??? Changed to different dns(county one instead of ours) change to dynamic ip, restarted few times - machine will not connect to neopost servers - or where ever it needs to connect at first installation. Firewall guys said all is done here, it should be all working, but it does not. I can ping ip of the machine no probs, but it does not talk to outside server (where it gets all information) Anyone had any experience with franking machine and have it working? Please share, pulling my hairs out. Thanks

vmware has own data protection virtual appliance. It is based on snap shots but on each machine you can restore files from snapshots (but only on that snapshotted machine), works pretty well and it is free. You just add destination where to store backup (can be local drive or shared drive). Not so great for DCs but good for everything else.

Or you can use adito (easier to setup than HAP)

+1 for spiceworks Been using for last 3 weeks, best one so far, easy to setup and I and works really well. Used trial version of logmein rescue - really great tool

AMI bios, tried few different types of software, like dmi236 but it could not change GUID/UUID, came with error. Already have open case with Gigabyte, hope they can help.

I think all printers set-ups using gpp or gpo works much better with mandatory profiles - don't have them here YET! Work in progress.

We tried both GPO and print management: Print management - does not allow to set default printer, lots of printers stay in the profile, unless you use script GPO way - not reliable, students not always get a printer - some errors with ports - did not make any sense, as they could log off and login again and it worked. So we went back to login scripts - first remove shared printers and than add printer in the current location - works all the time without any problems

We just done it last summer. Took around a week to setup all servers side, with DCs and GPOs, DHCP, DNS and so on. We have now 2 DCs and 2 file servers (that hold all docs etc), 1 sims server and WSUS+WDS server. WDS is just such a big time safer in comparison to RM Build (we ditched that even before and used FOG). All was done from scratch, new domain and that transferred dns and dhcp roles and imported users through CSV files. From old system I missed centralized console to create bulk users, assign software, printers etc. But those things can be done through other tools. Biggest pain were printers. The print management on 2008 does not offer option for making printer default, GPPs were not reliable (the printers not always appeared) in the end we started using logon scripts and all is good. I have to admit this was the best network move second to virtualization I have done here. Logon times are much faster, system can be customized to ours needs and we can use modern OS. And it is much cheaper to run. We saved 5k a year in support contracts and if we would like to move to CC4 it would cost us around £20k. One advice, set up correct permission on home folders from the beginning, we had a bit of struggle with that. Only what we left behind is smart cache, it is cheap to run and does what we need - no sense in reinventing wheel. It is just a linux with squid on it.

Hi Guys Anyone here use Notion 3 software? My music department wants to buy it, but as far as I know there is no MSI package and I read it not that easy to install across network. Anyone have experience with that? And would like to share. Thanks guys.
