I'm in the process of auditing, in half term we are taking second reading from printers and than the company which we contacted will give their proposal. The only worry for me is, they still did not said if they will support our existing printers etc. I had another company here and they said, most of our printers had to go, and the contract price per page will include cost of new printers - not something we were prepared to do. We still use old HP printers like Laser 4100 and 4250 - which are great build quality printers, going strong all the time and with big cartridges (like 61X) I don't think we need to replace toners more than 3 times a year. Can you share what happened with your printers when the third party company came in to manage your printers?

I did, than I get another error message saying that it does not recognize "enableCrossAppRedirect".

Hello, I used HAP on our network for some time, recently had problems with access, so wanted to try newest version - not sure if what I did was right Just copied content off old version to different folder (for backup) and paste the new version, tweaked web.config to our settings. Thx Librarian for quick reply I see now that %%G act as a wild card here, still got a bit of problem. Message when I try to run this batch file: Does Year 7/user_name/My Settings/Application Data/Serif/application/ specify a file name or directory name on the target (F = file, D = directory)? Is there a parameter I have missed?

Thanks for responce I have a folder in main directory of H drive -folder is called "test" and contains few subfolders, the path to copy to is \year 11\user_name\My settings\Application Data\Serif\application\ I have something like this left behind by some one who use to work for us, but not sure how to tweak it. Hi guys I hope that some one can help me, Need to copy some resources (a folder) to multiple users docs - to application data folder. Would like to avoid coping it one by one to each user, is there a tool that can do kind of mass copy to many folders at once? I seen xcopy command but it beats me to get the right parameters Putting those resources to shared, will not work as user can not point program to that. Can anyone help? Cheers

Leblanc - I will try with the profile, Andy - we made sure that students can't run scripts, they don't have Run option in start menu, they don't have option under right click Runs as.., they do not access to view files on C drive. So it is very limited what students can do - and we want to keep that way

Hi, Can anybody point me to direction how I can get registry key hkey current user for pupil. Of course if pupil is logged in I cannot run regedit, as this is disables, together with Run option in start menu. Remote registry view does not help as you can see only local machine registry, but not currently logged user. And I need to check if some setting are applied or not. Anyone has any ideas? I don't want really to totally change start menu, just limit it, so pupils will not fiddle with it instead of listen to the teacher/do work. We have here few bit more able kids, they did write scripts to try hack security and other sorts of things. I don't want them really to access powershell, or task scheduler. Sometimes they pretend that computer done something weird and they have to get IT help so they come to our office for help, in slowest way they can - they have this special walking technique, where they are slower than turtle - everything to get out of the lesson. I know that most of them will not touch those programs, but small numbers will, and I know I will have teachers complaining about it.

Yeah, preparation begins early, as we are atm RM CC3 school I want to move away. We pay them around £5k for support and we don't really use it often. Found a kind of solution to my problem, run is not a problem as there is GPO to remove it. With other software there is a gpo which prevent users to open specified programs, you need to provide exe files. Almost everything covered, apart from task scheduler as this is msc file. So users can see those programs, but when they try to launch it, they get info that they can't as administrator restricted it. Not a solution I would like to see, but at least it works. I will look as well at your way with redirection - can you provide bit more details - do you redirect start menu components? Now I'm looking at mandatory profiles, I know I suppose to copy one profile and than it become one, but I'm not sure where I suppose to copy it from. Only ntuser.dat I can find on my test windows 7 machine is in c:\user\default. Would love to see some kind of detailed guide. Only what I could find is copy profile to shared folder and change ntuser.dat to ntuser.man.

Hi All, Just playing with new domain,which I plan to put live next summer. It is windows 2008R2 and I have few issues with setting up right gpos for students. I have restricted quite a lot, but kind find few things, so maybe you can help. No usb devices plugged in, laptop on battery still BSOD. I will try powering off home hub, just to check. We are switching her to different laptop and will try that. I know that my dell (2 month old) works there fine. Her laptop was old samsung. It is very strange. I will try to start laptop away from her home and come in with it as it is ON, but of course she can't use it like, just for experiment. Never seen anything like that before

Hi guys I have this laptop and it bluescreens only in teachers house. When it is back in school it is fine. SO I took exactly same model laptop to her house and this one gives blue screen as well. I took back to my house, school and everywhere else it is fine. I don't think it is a laptop as 2 did exactly same thing, when they do work fine in different location, could it be some kind of magnetic field? Or maybe power lines. Did anyone had similar problem at all.

I have not bough single computer from RM in last 3 years - there are lots of companies who do their own PCs and you can choose what exactly motherboard you want to have in it. Usually most of the realtec network cards works well with RM build disk

We used Dells D530 - caused smallest amount of trouble. Before we had RM laptops (expensive) and Acers (rubbish quality). Dell re now my favourites, because of build quality and quality of battery - after 3 years they still hold between 2-3 hours. Only problems that parts are quite expensive. Main problem with laptops we have is the power socket. Pupils pull the laptop form the trolley /(with power still plugged in it) and the power socket become a bit loose, after some time this socket is so loose that to make it charge the laptop you have to wiggle a cable a bit - which of course no one does from lesson to lesson. To replace power socket in laptop you have to change Motherboard. I would like to replace laptops with PCs but we don't have enough room/sockets in classrooms.

Any RM workstation have local logon switched off, so it needs to be vanilla Windows - and than it is fine

I like have more control of admin workstations, RM machines have limitations, and loading time take much more time. In summer very often we have admin staff in offices, and this is time when I work on the network - so very often it is down - than they can work on any documents locally - you can't do that with RM workstation. Licensing costs - we were very fortunate to have MS sponsorship - free software for last 5 years. It ends next year, but we can keep all the licenses we were given. You will need to replace server anyway - does not matter if you have vanilla or RM. Do you have schools agreement with MS? If yes you should have software assurance - free upgrades. For me move to Vanilla in clear financial terms would not cost me a penny - only time - and I'm not sure if I have enough time and confidence to just leave RM. I have not use any support for at least 6 months - but if I need it, I know those guys are there. I think schools ICT will get very difficult time now, with all the saving government have in mind. I know I will loose next year at least 10k from my budget. So I need to look where I can save and still to provide fully working network. Hard times are coming.

I can see your point. But I have few computers (admin staff) which are not RM workstation, but just plain xp pro. This gives me ability to login locally and speeds up boot up time and login. And here I have to create GPOs for those workstations if I want to tweak it a bit. And I have to admit I do enjoy doing something like that. Windows 2008 just looks and feels more user friendly. I think if I had lots of money, sure I would upgrade to cc4 - but this year budget was cut even more - all this public sector savings - and I either stay with CC3 or move to vanilla network - work for next summer. We have already virtualized all our servers (with out using RM) and I think any step further would make it easier having Vmware in place

I don't have cc4 on the network, nor 2k8 domain controller. But I have been in near school where they use 2k8 and there are some thing which are beneficial, like for example drive mapping - no need to have GPO for that, it is just an option you can tick. I think it is a bit easier to use. And if some one have multi site school, they can use ReadOnly DC. RM was always bit behind with support for released software by MS (service packs, operating systems)

I wish they would support W2k8 R2 - I find it much better to use than 2k3. Still CC3 network and not to sure what to do next summer - upgrade to CC4 or go to vanilla with Win2k8 R2 - saves money in spending, but I would probably spend lot of time tweaking it, to our needs. RM have quite a lot of tools, which are sometimes very usefull

Yeah, for volume licensing there is a free tool, I think it is called enterprise deployment kit or something like that, it basically creates MSI package - works well. I can't get how they can justify such a rubbish support for software that is not cheap. We usually get much better support form much smaller companies, even when software cost less than £100. I guess the answer is because they CAN.

Sorted now. Becuase we are RM cc3 school, we can use ACL Detective, which records what registry changes are needed to run software. I know now that it is a permission thing. Our packages use file writeaccess.ini file for security settings for application, and for CS5 t looks like that: [C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe] Everyone=0x1301BF [C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe PCD] Everyone=0x1301BF [C:\Program Files\Adobe] Everyone=0x1301BF Maybe someone will find it helpful. Hello, I have managed to create mis package for Adobe CS5 using their tools. It does install OK but after that no student or teacher can run it, only administrator user type. It throws error that there was a problem with licensing of the product (number 213:11). I can click OK and program close. Anyone had similar problem and found a solution maybe? Adobe support is not really helpful as they claims it is problem with using software and for support I would have to buy a support contract - and we have not even manage to start using this suite. Thanks in advance Kris UPDATE: Adobe claims that only local admins can run software, which means I would have to give students local admin rights - not to happy to do.

I was in same situation about 2 month ago. And I was told about FOG, not a Linux user myself and I did managed to install it on CentOS with out much of the problem. FOG manuals give step by step guide - really easy to follow and when it is done, you do rest on web interface (no need knowledge of linux). I had bit of a problem with LinuxSE, but found on one forum how to disable it and it worked like charm. Now I have used it for more than 60 PCs and it is very easy to use and most important fast. I have image with windows xp and drivers, nothing else - it takes just above 1 minute to reimage workstation. All the rest of software is allocated after PC is joined to the domain. But you can any image you want, and make is like sysprep - so after reboot system will ask you standard windows install questions like computer name etc. Easy to use and you don't need to have skills in Linux to install it, really simple installation. My works on xenServer as VM - no probs
