  1. One of our students has brought in a word document with pictures created on a Mac. When ou open it you can see the text but not the pics. There is a message where the picture should be saying 'Quicktime and a TIFF (uncompressed) decompressor are needed to see this picture.' I have seen this error before and the student says that I have fixed it before but I can't remember it. Can anyone suggest a way to view or decompress these pictures. Suggestions on google have not been very helpful.
  2. I'd think long and hard before considering this. We have the misfortune to be moving over to in at the moment. It should have been up and running in the new year but it still hasn't gone live. Also costs an arm and a leg. Support not very good either.
  3. Is it easy to set up? Do you allow staff and students to connect from home using this? What about security?
  4. Hi all Do you allow staff/students access to their school accounts from home. If so how or what do you use to control it. I used to have Sonic Wall at my last school but that was only for a limited amount of staff and Ranger outpost for the students. I don't think Outpost would be an option here because we have Classlink. Any guidance with this would be much appreciated.
  5. I'm with you on this one. I think the whole IT industry in undervalued at the moment. Most people moan about IT but can't live without it (especially in education now). I've been in this industry a long time and seen it from both sides (corporate and government). There was a time when it was a fairly well paid job but lots of people realised this and jumped on the band wagon, which seriously undervalued the job. There will always be people out there willing to take less in the vain hope it will lead to more.
  6. Oh dear indeed. Unfortunately my NM is frightened of change. Which is why I'm saddled with Viglen PC's, Classlink and Sophos. Despite numerous fairly heated conversations, when it comes down to it - no change.
  7. Yes unfortunately we do have Sophos installed.
  8. Yes it does have network drives mapped. Is this more a network problem then?
  9. Hi All I have a couple of computers (one of them only a couple of months old) which keep hanging when you double click 'My Computer'. They hang for a while and sometimes come up or normally I have to chop it out through task manager. After doing this the screen goes blank for about 30 seconds then the desktop reappears. I tried running virus/spyware scans with nil returns. Task manager doesn't show an excessive amount of processor being used, in fact in some cases it's shown 95%+ system idle. Has anyone else had this kind of problem? better still does anyone have a solution.
  10. Happy Birthday Zerohour:D
  11. If you go the PC route and are looking at editing packages I'd avoid Pinnacle. I put that in at my last school and it was rubbish. I ended up putting Cyberlink Power Director on which came free with the video cameras we bought. This worked much better and was simple to use.
  12. Thanks once again to everyone that replied but I've got to give credit where credit is due. Simon from CP gave me a quote not to beaten.
  13. Hi all in Techie land Just wanted to know if anyone has used 'The IT Index' by Probrand before? I had a quote for some laser cartridges and they were quite reasonable but just wanted to know if anyone had any experiences with them, ie; reliable/unreliable etc? Cheers
  14. I have just bought a Cisco wireless solution from these people. Chase Morran Plc 16 Anning Street London EC2A 3HB Reg No 3222702 Tel: 020 7749 4321 Fax: 020 7749 4322 They were very helpful and reasonably priced. 15. So this is the new replacement to the wireless mouse. or Hmm. Nice ass.
  16. Happy Birthday. Are you term time only then? My school broke up 2 weeks ago but I'm here for most of their holiday. Just 2 weeks off from next week.
  17. Welcome to the school IT technician's safe haven.
  18. I've just run this and it ran sweet as a nut. Cheers!!
  19. I often cancel Savservice when it hogs all of the processor, usually on client machines. This is generally down to the wrong configuration. The other problem is the pain. Administrator account is in the following groups. Administrator Domain Admin Domain Users EMLibrary user Enterprise Admin Group Policy Creator Owner Network Administrator Schema Admin Sophos Console Administrator SophosAdministrator I hope that covers about everything.
  20. Can anybody shed some light on this problem please. I am logged on to the server (server2k) as administrator, trying to install a piece of software. It partially installs then fails asking me to 'Verify that I have sufficient privileges to start system services'. Also earlier I tried to cancel a process running (savservice) via task manager and it told me I did not have access to do this. Yet I can go into services and stop/start processes.
  21. Sorry I haven't replied to this one earlier. We had a hole cut in the wall, I think it was about a 4" pipe, so standard core bit size for extrator fans. We also put a hose on instead of the drip tray so we didn't keep emptying it. The kids used to love it in the winter, they all used to stand around the vent while having a crafty fag.

    Keyboards

CPC have both PS2 and USB from £2.99 ex vat Wired | CPC
  23. I have a PC which when you boot up it says 'Keyboard error or No Keyboard attached'. I have tried new keyboards, both PS2 and USB but to no avail. Does this mean that the PS2 port is knackered and therefore a new motherboard. I even tried a BIOS reset in the hope that it would kick start it back to life. Could some confirm this for me please or even suggest another solution. Also don't you find it annoying that someone has put under this message 'Press F1 to continue'. Thats almost worth putting in the FFS!! forum.
  24. We had a couple of portables in the server rooms in my last school. They did the job nicely. 1 room 25' x 10', 7 servers, 3 PC's, 7' rack full with switches, 1 air con unit, nice and chilly. Here is a link to the units plus where we got them AMCOR | PLMB15KEH | Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning | Electrical, Lighting & Security | CPC
  25. Needless to say that I do now.
