About 26 hours. It came 85% charged though. Is the fan spin up something that it just does when its charging? Im trying to work out if its DOA. Ive just knocked it off at wall and switched it off as its driving me up the wall. Gonna plug it back in to charge over night though. It never seems to get past 97% though. Very odd. It gets to 95, then to 97,96,95,96,97.

Hi. We just got the delivery of all our new server stuff, so, to save time, i thought i'd wack the new 5500 UPS in to charge. Its making a right racket. Really loud. Seems like the fan on the front is on full wack. And it wont charge to 100% either, seems to hover between 95-97%. Ideas?

Hi. Im currently testing LanView3/TightVNC for network monitoring. Whilst ive finally managed to get it all working, the connection to each machine seems to vary from a noticable delay/jerkyness, to alot of jerkyness. Is there a way to smooth it out? As im asuming its possible, seeing as our NSS clients are silky smooth...? Thanks in advance all. .

Right. The only way that ive managed to get this done anyway is to have the MSI go out@ default, then a script run at startup to change the registry enteries. Not ideal, but better than a kick in the teath. .

Something odd going on here. I edited the MSI with a new hex code for the registry entry. Installed on a test workstation, double checked the hex code in the registry to what it should be. Put the right password in LanView3....still doesnt work. . Ideas?

How do i edit in the MSI then? Orca? I can see some password enteries under 'registary' but dont know the hex keys to change? I havnt no, as i dont know what it is. Can someone PM or email it to me please? Thanks. .

The password for VNC? So will the MSI automatically apply the reg file? Or will i have to deploy that myself?

Is the password/setting for it IN the MSI itself? As the download has MSI files, reg files, nai files, ini files, ect; I install the client +the tight VNC msi on a VM, and it still doesnt work. LV3 can see the station, but again, cant connect to it? + How do i set a network password in LanView3? Im getting access denyed for everything.

And does that already have a secure password setup, and when running is hidden to the user?

Hmm. Some interesting choices. I would prefer to have a one app fits all approach, so the workstations arnt potentially running multiple clients. But with NSS being so buggy lately i really dont want to use that myself, where as its fine for the teachers to use. Ideally atm, i would have the teachers use the existing NSS, and have THEM do the 'live banning' of the kids. Meaning one less task for myself. And then myself to use LanView3 to check up on specific people and do maintenence tasks. AB Tutor looks interesting, but the policys thing in it, irrc, ive been told that that can cause all manor of problems for teachers, and as a result, me. iTalc looks good too, but im unsure about it. Looks a bit unprofessional.

Hi. Im trying to get LanView3 working, as it'll save me a fair few grand over getting another 150 licences of NSS. Anyway. Ive installed the server software on my workstation. Ive installed the client software on a test machine. Ive installed UltraVNC on the test machine. I can send some commands to the test machine already, for example, gpupdate. But i cant view it. The errors ive seen thus far, are cannot connect. So i installed a VNC app (tight vnc). Then it asks for a password, so i put the VNC password in, incorrect password. Then i install ultravnc, and now i get socket errors! . Can someone help me get all this working: - LanView Server working on my workstation. - All the nessessary apps in MSI format for GP deployment, along with config files that'll hide all of it from the users, so no user prompts come up. - Remote viewing working. Not sure, but gencontrol, which i think is a varient of VNC, does?

Impero looks like it does everything NSS does, and more. But i cant find any screenshots of the GUI. Ive been playing with Lanview3. And whilst it seems very powerful, i just cant get it to connect to any PCs with the client software on it. It'll see them though. As i was thinking that i could stick with NSS on our existing licences for the computer labs, as we have enough licences for that, but then myself could use Lanview3 to view every machine on the network.

Hi. Im was just wondering what monitoring software you use at your schools? Im currently using NSS here, and while for the most part i like it, the latest version is as buggy as hell and causes machines to lock up when my workstation is switched on. . AD Tutor control, ive tryed a demo, and while i think that i can get used to it, i think the GUI is perhaps a little too 'raw' for the teaching staff to get used to. What do you all use? Thanks.

At the moment, we have one VLE, 2 file servers, 2 DCs, an IIS, 250 desktops, 50ish laptops, 30ish printers, 20 projectors. And theres just me. During the summer the number of servers are going up even more. Still just me. Run off my feet how it is, apparently there isn't enough work load.

Is there a way to cut down Ubuntu and have that work off a stick without excessive writes?

I was planning on having the windows one just for diagnostics, but the Linux one as my own stick, so i'd be needing a version of Linux on it that was fully functional. Unfortunatelly, whilst i can find plenty of guides on how to do it, none specify which ones have all the write heavy operations disabled/minimised or not. Because normal usage would kill a USB stick pretty fast. .

Hi. Can anyone recommend a version of Linix that'll run on a USB stick without killing it off fast? Im looking at creating two diagnostic USB keys (both 16Gb), one with Linux, and one with Windows, both with the ability to be plugged into any PC on boot and have it work. Ideas? Im having a few problems with the database that powdermonkey has made me. I can add incidents, and it does save them, but it wont let me add new pupils for some reason? Can anyone fix it for me? And possibly fix/remove/add the menu buttons ive made, like the save ones? Thanks in advance all. . incidents.zip

I allways have the OS on a seperate drive to everything else. Force of habit. SD Digital TV. Its a modified LaCie rackmount running 2k3. Has about 700Gb left on it. Just put the order in. Gonna try it with the NAS as its storage. If it runs ok, ive saved a few hundred quid, if it doesnt, then i'll buy a FW/USB drive for it. Or wack a few spare 160Gb HDDs in it. Should be ok though, its going on our admin network, which has very very low traffic usage.
