  1. I know i can do that. But what about accessing that sort of stuff without the client like the VMWare server can do...? So the limit is on the processors not the cores? Similar to how windows is licenced as sockets rarther than cores. So a dual processor system consisting of two Xeon Quad cores would work completely? With hardware virtualization support. & how come the GUI says the maximum file size is 256Gb...? Bit small aint it? So basically to get the free web admin thing that comes in VMWare Server i have to buy VC Client? lol. Is it that much faster though? With hardware virtualization support the difference cant be that big...?
  2. OS to manage. I dont really have to 'manage' 2k8 though...occasional WU, but apart from that, nack all. All 8 & all 16Gb of ram? The VMWare Server (free), has a web interface for administration and used a Java based console screen. Does ESXi have anything like that? As i cant see nout...?
  3. I have a licence though...? But everytime i go to register the key it wont register. Tbh, im failing to see the advantage over using a 2k8 based VMware installation. It wont support all the cores out of the box, and doesnt support any type of remote admin unless the client software is installed on the workstations you want to use to access it, ect; 2008 is looking like the better option atm.
  4. Well ESXi is annoying me upto now. Aparentely its a 60 day trial! Thought it was free! And i cant find a way to import my old VMWare VMs. Im starting to think that i'd be better of using 2k8 & VMware server again...
  5. So ESXi wouldnt support dual quad cores out of the box?
  6. So basically, if i have ESXi installed, then upgrading it to the more capable VMware products is simple a case of a licence key? Question: If i install ESXi now on one of our servers, then a few months down the line, install more RAM & a second processor, will ESXi pick up the extra resources automatically?
  7. So basically: VMware Server - Free - Can do everything but migrations but needs a host OS. VMWare ESXi - Free - As above but is its own OS. VMWare ESX - As above but can do migrations. VMWare VI3 - As above but can do live migrations. ?
  8. Hi. Does anyone know whats what when it comes to VMware? Reason being is that theres so many different versions its a little silly. For example, im running VMware Server v2.0 Free on one of our blades as a test thing, but i honestly cant see a single down downside to it. It supports 64bit, has no CPU/mem/HDD limits, or a limit on the number of VMs i can use. The only thing that its missing that i can see is that it doesnt do live VM migrations to another server. And ESXi, from what i can tell, is the same but its own OS/HyperVisor. Even the HP Insight 'version' is free. So what are the other VMware products, differences, and why would i need to pay for them? Thanks in advance all. .
  9. Not to sound awkward, but this isnt about WSUS exactely. Its more of an SCCM issue, as it can see the WSUS server and the WSUS server can get its sync updates fine. If i set the distribution packages to get off the internet rarther than a local network machine, then it does appear to get all the packages it needs. But, as ive touched on, that sorta defeats the idea of having WSUS there, as specifyed in all the guides ive seen....
  10. There is no logic to this at all. If im selecting for the SUP to download off the internet, put the files into the source folder then distributing the files to the DPs, then what is the point in actually having WSUS installed on a WSUS server at all? When all that seems to completely bypass WSUS and download its updates itself, then put them on a share, that gets mirrored to another share, that the clients then access.....?
  11. Im using SCCM. Not strait WSUS. Im trying to get WSUS to integrate with SCCM correctly. The problem is in the deployment packages at the moment, then after that, who knows. But its starting to annoy me now, as im following 100s of guides that say do this/that and none of them bloody work!
  12. No luck still. Ive got the wizard/s set to use our WSUS\UpdateDeploy share as its source. To use the a local share, the WSUS\WSUSContent, to get the updates from And to use our WSUS server as its distribution point. And ive reset all the permissions on every share thats references there to have our SCCM account on full control for it. Now, instead of access denyed errors, i get 'cant find file' errors. This is getting silly now. WTF do i have to do to get this dam thing working!
  13. Hi. Ive finally had the time over the last week to concentrate on getting SCCM working on our network. Now, ive got some of the easy stuff done, like asset management, software metering, ect; And after spending the better part of yesterday, ive finally got SCCM to see the WSUS server i setup just for its uses. Problem is, that its starting to annoy me now. The WSUS server syncronises, and downloads all the updates ive told it too. SCCM sees these updates. The thing is, how the hell do i schedule SCCM to deploy these updates! Ive created some deployment templates, for example 'XP Critical Updates'. But when i try to apply some of the updates to that template it asks for deployment packages!? Now im reading the supposid adminstrators companion books that i got and its no clearer as to what im ment to do. Surely im not ment to tell it where to MOVE the updates to prior to sending the updates to the clients, as thats just a waste of bandwidth and diskspace! Plus, if i give it a share to goto, it says access denyed as the error after its processed the updates for a while. All i want to bloody do is get SCCM to auto-install all updates of a certain type at specific times of the day! . Anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance all. .
  14. Just a thought, is anyone here planning on migrating to R2? Asuming there is no upgrade path from normal 2k8. Im just weighing up the idea of what to do with a spare server of ours, tempted to go down the WSUS route as i keep meaning to set one up, but im tempted to leave it be until R2 is out....?
  15. Ive got no problem with them dropping 32bit support. But to do it to an OS thats already out there is stupid as far as im concerned. Old hat, yes. But 32bit 2k8 & 3.5Gb of ram is still more than enough for most server roles, and brings with it greater hardware compatibility. Not as bad as it is on the desktop, but officially, unless its changed, the last time i spoke to HP, 64bit 2k8 isnt offically supported by their Insight software.
  16. Not as far as im aware. Just for redundancys sake tbh. Theres alot of schools of thought on how to do it, none are more correct than another tbh. As long as you have some sort of redundancy, then all is good tbh. lol. .
  17. Why is it about time? Not that i want to cause an arguement, but that statement has no logic. If 2k8 R2 is anything like 2k3 R2, then it'll just be a few MMCs basically. To which x64 holds no advantage over. Even if its more than that, short of systems that require more than 3.25Gb of memory to function properly, having R2 limited to x64 still has no advantage.
  18. Theres multiple ways to to do it. Personally, although it requires more effort, i'd split it into smaller chunks. So server 1 did the first 255, server 2 the second 255, server 1 the third 255, and so on.
  19. 64bit only!? So there will be no 32bit version, at all?
  20. Just to expand on this, as if i can get Librium working with 2k7, then i wont really need to get a new bit of helpdesk software. . Can you explain in more detail how it sends/recieves email from exchange 2007, what database you use, and what functionality it adds please? I take it that once up and running updates to problems get send out to both the original poster of the ticket and the rep assigned too it? Can problems/updates be emailed in? Thanks
  21. Has anyone used OS Ticket? Looks good for an open source piece of software, but i cant find any screenshots or live demos around to play with. Im currently faffing around with the live demos of ManageEngine Service Desk Free & WebHelpDesk. I cant decide if they are pointlessly complex or feature rich! lol. Either way, they look very overkill compared to Librium. WebHelpDesk looks good, im trying to work out if its possible to get rid of the priority thing off the users submitted thing, and if i can get it to autologin to the helpdesk once a user is logged on. 'single sign on' so to speak.
  22. You can do that too. You can target to a multitude of options, ranging from computers, users, OU, specifications, ect;
  23. Hi. We've been using Librium Helpdesk here for about about a year and a half now, and its done its job well. We've recently rebuilt our network from scratch, and we now have an exchange server. Problem is, i cant get Librium working with it. . So, im on the look out for some new helpdesk software, preferably free, but must include Exchange 2k7 support. Ideally, i'd like to have requests to be possible to be sent to the helpdesk via both an interface for the staff, and via email to a pre-specced email address ([email protected]). Plus, the ability to have all submitted jobs to have the jobs submitted in the same way that staff would send via email, have info emailed back to them too. Plus, the interface in Librium is a bit 'blank'. Wouldnt mind something that looks a little more professional if its out there? lol. Thoughts & advice? Thanks in advance all. .
  24. Yes you can? Theres a box on the targetting tab (i think its there anyway) that you can tick saying 'set as default printer' with another one that says 'only when a local printer isnt present' or something like that anyway. Our domain here is completely new, with the entire network being rebuilt from scratch over the summer. We went with 2k8, and apart from a few problems with 2600n's, our print server, touch wood, runs pretty well. .
  25. Do you want to switch offline folders off? If so, theres a GP setting that'll just completely disable it. .
