I went for a five year deal for Trend, but then I haven't been bitten yet!

This is a really simple question but I haven't found a simple answer! Does anyone know if you have Windows 8 already installed whether you can install it over the top like a service pack rather than flattening and reinstalling?

1 NM (me) and two full time techs supporting over 1200 devices and 30 servers. We need another network-type person really as my Techs are full on with the desktop side of things and I'm the single point of failure (and also there is too much to do for one person). Hence we're looking for an assistant NM.

I'm a manager and wear the same as my techs. Shirt embroidered with school logo and 'IT Support', black trousers and smart shoes. Although I'm the manager it's a very 'hands on' position and a suit and tie just would not be practical.

I did it last summer. It's not difficult but not a very quick process (I also took the opportunity to upgrade all my datastores to VMFS5 and my VMs to version 8). I had to do a lot of shuffling of VMs between my hosts to put them into maintenance mode, and also shuffle data between my datastores so I could wipe them then recreate them as VMFS5 (it's better to do this that upgrade them).

We only use Radius for authentication so when a student connects to our WLAN their internet connection has the correct level of filtering applied to it. Re mapping drives, it's not something I've tried but given you can't join an RT device to an AD domain (AFAIK) I'm not sure how you'd get around doing that without using something like HAP or WebDav.

Grey wet days where you never see the sun really get me down. I haven't got SAD, but it definitely affects me. For example, here in 'Sunny Devon' I haven't seen the wretched thing for at least five days.

Yes, we do use RADIUS and it works very well indeed. Students have to authenticate when connecting to the network, and authenticate when opening IE and that's it (making sure they don't select remember my password). A reboot at the end and the Surface wipes all settings and logs back in as 'User'. As I said, early days, but working well so far.

We have literally just started using them. All I've done so far is set up six manually with a local admin account, and local user account. The kids logon with the user account, then connect to our wireless network using their AD credentials. It's just a trial so far so we haven't looked at purchasing apps, etc. I have noticed quite a few of the apps don't like being sat behind a proxy though.

Hi all Hope someone has come across this before and can help me before I tear my hair out! I have Wireshark set up on a Sony Vaio PCG-4N1M which has a Marvell Yukon 88E8055 NIC and am trying to packet sniff by linking it to a mirror output port on a HP 5400 series switch. I know Wireshark is installed correctly as I can see the packet count incrementing on the wireless NIC when I view 'Capture Interfaces'. However, when I link the Vaio to the mirror port through the wired NIC and a length of ethernet cable I get a zero packet count. Below are the instructions I followed. I'm hoping I've made a daft mistake! INSTRUCTIONS I FOLLOWED The port I am monitoring is untagged on a VLAN called 'Inward'. I ensured the spare port I would be using as the mirror output port matched this configuration. I then set up a mirror port on the 5400 series switch as follows: ################################### mirror-port where is the port you want to use for the output. To select the ports you want to monitor, use the command interface ethernet < monitor-list > monitor where: < monitor-list > includes port numbers and static trunk names such as a4, c7, b5-b8, and trk1. ################################### Using the 'show monitor' command I checked the mirror port configuration is set up as it should be. I then connect my monitoring PC (which is a Sony Vaio PCG-4N1M) to the mirror output port using a length of ethernet cable. This laptop has a Marvell Yukon 88E8055 NIC so I have made sure I have changed the registry as per the instructions on the Wireshark website. These are as follows: ################################### You should add the DWORD SkDisableVlanStrip with value of 1 and the DWORD *PriorityVLANTag (including the star) with value of 0 under the registry key: "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002bE10318}\000" , where 000 is the number of the folder for the Marvel ethernet controller. ################################### Finally I have unticked all the settings under the connection properties for the NIC to ensure Wireshark is only capturing traffic from the mirror output port.

As above! It might mean me having to nuke my half built SP1 server. (Sorry I can't post anything more constructive!)

The only thing our users store on their laptops are offline files. I'd better double check they're encrypted!

I've just been told by a supplier that under the new Ofsted inspections if your hard drives aren't encrypted you lose a point. Has anyone else heard this?
