Another vote for ESET NOD32 here. I've been a happy user for about 11 years now.

Take a look at EmailRelay from Sourceforge. I had to use it to get alerts from our SAN. It works very well.

As others have said you can take the exams at any Prometric centre. I've done the MCITP 2008 - MCSA 2012 exam in sleepy old Devon so it's definitely possible!

I'm a geek in that I love technology and gadgets and am a World of Tanks addict but I'm also heavily into bodybuilding and cars so I wouldn't class myself as a stereotypical geek\nerd.

Quick question regarding BYOD. It looks like we might be going down this road but I am finding problems with several devices not liking authenticated proxies (IPads in particular). We have a transparent SWGFL connection and then have our own firewall (TMG) with Websense hooked into it for web filtering. I've tried turning off authentication on TMG and relying on Websense for authentication (using DC agent) but this wasn't truly transparent (it sometimes prompts for authentication when the user is already connected which causes no end of problems). So, I thought I'd ask if anyone here has had similar problems and how did you resolve them?

Hi Chris I doubt you would get a position as a NM immediately (though I'm not saying it's impossible). You might stand a better chance in a small primary, but a most big secondaries now have a lot of enterprise hardware and software (I've been told we have more than some councils) so the NM role is quite a technical one. I would say the best thing to do would be to aim to get in as a technician (maybe a senior one if such a position exists) and go from there. Once you've worked in education you've have much more transferable skills to apply for more senior roles. I'm not sure what your salary is now, but you might have to take a cut unfortunately.

We use Haivision Videofurnace. It works very well (though not so well for full films) but is very expensive and I'm not sure I'd recommend it for that reason.

Some other notes - If you buy a henhouse or run make sure it is made of weldmesh and not chicken wire. Foxes will bite through chicken wire. - To stop foxes getting in you will also have to bury the weldmesh into the ground - Chickens are VERY destructive. They will strip to earth whatever ground you will put them on (we put them on our lawn and they stripped it in a couple of months). You also need to think about all the manure that's going onto it and whether or not you can move their run occasionally due to this. - There are several types of bloodsucking mite that live in the henhouse and can affect your chickens. You will need to throughly clean with a mitekiller periodically. In summary, I loved having chickens and rehoming ex-bats is very rewarding. They are real characters too. However, I got brassed off going to let them out and lock them up in all weathers (like now!) and it also affected us on days out (we had to be back to lock them up, which is early in wintertime). Would I have any more? Only if I could have a setup where they could let themselves out and put themselves back in.

I think my principal's idea is to get rid of everything and just rely on SWGFL. I'm not sure why we were set up this way originally (old NM long gone with zero documentation) but I suspect (and hope) SWGFL's offerings have improved since then. I don't know about SWGFL VLANs either. If they are set up then it would allay my fears a bit and I think my principal would be happy with losing per-user logging due to the large monetary saving.

Hi all I'd be grateful to see what others think of this: We currently use TMG and Websense and have done for years. The clients that connect out through this are W7-based devices connected to my network and authenticated by AD. What we are increasingly finding is devices like IPads, Surface RTs, etc don't work very well behind an authenticated proxy so we've been looking at getting another device to sit alongside the TMG box. Also, our ISP is SWGFL. This has lead to a meeting I've just had with my principal where has questioned the need for the firewall and web filtering and asked why we cannot just ditch both and rely on the SWGFL filtering service and firewall (as a way of saving money). I know we originally set up Websense as there were (many years ago) problems with the SWGFL service. We originally set up a firewall to 'protect' us from other schools who use SWGFL and share our IP range assigned through them. Now I can see the benefit of getting shot of Websense, but getting rid of our firewall makes me feel very uneasy (even though it would make my life much easier in relation to unauthenticated proxy). So, I'm just seeing what my fellow Edugeekers who have a set up similar to the above do (and would you argue for keeping the firewall or not?) Thanks all Paul

I've got mine set up almost identically to how yours is. What you have to do when you change your tapes on is insert new ones and move them to the 'Free' media pool (you can right click on them in the GUI and select 'Move to Media Pool'). VEEAM will do exactly what you have said (and works very well).

I'm afraid we're going to have to agree to disagree. If someone can't be bothered to read a 'High Importance' email marked 'URGENT - Network Maintenance at 1600' then I have no sympathy (and neither would Senior Management). And if they dismiss such an email as junk or 'marketing bumf' then they need their heads looking at. I agree with you that methods of communication need to be looked at if there are real problems (like a constant deluge of emails, phone calls, whatever) but, in my experience, it only tends to be a tiny percentage of staff (if any at all) who say they didn't get the information. As a matter of courtesy, in a serious situation such as the above, I would walk around the staffrooms ten minutes before and check everyone was aware but I certainly wouldn't do that for every single ICT related problem (and wouldn't be expected to either).

What you are talking about is an organisational, or even personal, issue surely? If staff are deleting emails, ignoring phone calls, not reading posters or screens, etc, etc then I honestly cannot see how they can blame anyone if they miss out on important information (bearing in mind information regarding everything in our school gets disseminated this way, not just ICT problems).

Exactly! I should make it clear we wouldn't be rude to anyone if they rang up or popped in but I would say an email had been sent out about it. If the boot was on the other foot I don't think they'd accept my excuse of 'I didn't read it because I deleted it'!

We email to all staff too. As others have said, if they just delete it then more fool them.

Unfortunately we didn't get a penny for them! In the end we gave them away to SCOMIS for use in primaries and the like.
