Perhaps, but if we use SS on the servers themselves (rather than having an intermediary SAN), it would need both to fail to lose the data, no? As for backups, there's no reason they can't be taken during the day, I guess it just makes more sense to me to do them out-of-hours, when nobody is using any kit and files are unlikely to change mid-backup.

Aye. that was my primary concern too. Nightly backups would mean if there was a failure at 15:00, we would lose an entire day's work, so wasn't really a route I was willing to go down. One of the companies I've contacted (who also gave me a quote 17 grand over budget.... Because.. Reasons? I guess?) were recommending some software that by the sounds of it does the same as SSD (Starwind?) Thanks for clearing that up At least it gives me another avenue to go down, rather than having to whack a big ol' SAN in, too. Since I'm (essentially) starting from scratch, seems like maybe that's the better route to go down.

To be fair, if it were safe to open public schools (which I'm still not convinced it is...), it would be safe to open independents... But since they're independents they're allowed to choose not to. (Then again, a fair few councils, mine included, have instructed schools not to reopen in full capacity on June 1st, so..)

Question for people using 'standard' rack servers: What're you doing for failover? Correct me if I'm wrong (no, really, please do!) but wouldn't you need some sort of shared storage pool that's accessible even if the server dies? That strikes me as a problem for run-of-the-mill rack servers? Or are you just taking (e.g. nightly) snapshots of each server that you can spin up on the 2nd if the 1st dies? I know Storage Spaces Direct was mentioned in the post above, just wondering how others are doing it. Am I right in thinking you could use it to effectively mirror the drives that store the VM's across multiple servers?

I'm sorry, but I just don't think a boilerplate 'Lolz not actually a medical device tho' is sufficient when you know full well that the people asking about them are asking because of COVID-19, and as such. you're being asked about these devices in a medical capacity. These devices gather medical data about a subject, and that data that will be used as part (or in whole) of a medical strategy. We both know this. Yes, the clients are also being irresponsible too. But if I sell someone a gun to someone knowing full well they're trying to kill someone, am I not, to a degree, also culpable? This disease is still killing people. Everyone has to do their bit to protect others and whilst the school/other organisation are still shouldering most of the fault for using non-medical devices as part of a medical strategy, I just can't help but feel it's irresponsible for you to promote them as such, even if you're trying to weasel-word your way out of it. If you sold someone thermal cameras 6 months ago and now they decide "hang on a minute.. couldn't we..?" then that's not on you at all, but you're directly drawing a line between these cameras and a COVID solution and, again, that's incredibly irresponsible. I appreciate companies may be suffering financially at the moment (though I have no idea if your company specifically is), but I'm seeing a fair few companies jump on disingenuous schemes to sell this or that to people based mostly on FUD. For example, there's a lot of insufficient hand sanitizer out there (vinegar solutions, or <70% alcohol). Again, people are dying because of this disease and to try to capitalize in such a disingenuous way is, whilst legally sound, morally questionable. But to anybody considering implementing these, I would advise you listen to sound science, and do not base your medical strategy on devices that are not meant for medical applications.

You are being asked about them as a medical device, and you ruddy well know it. You aren't suddenly having an uptick of people asking because folks are sneaking onto premises in camo gear and warpaint, are you?! Don't cash in on people's panic. Do the responsible thing and advise your clients that these would be ineffective at best, and lead people into a false sense of security at worst.

We're using school.lea.sch.uk here but I'd like to move away from it if preferable. It's far too wordy and there's too many chances to hear things wrong. School.uk (or even if we could just have school.sch.uk) would be much better.

Backups don't need to be fast. They just need to be there. On the plus side, I've written a brief outline of what servers I want to create/replace and why, and sent it to the brass approximating 7-10k for the server(s) to host the cluster, and they've come back with essentially "Mate, we hired you for your knowledge. You said in the interview it needed ripping out. Buy what you have to buy." which was a very nice surprise! I expected I'd need to elaborate/justify the cost some more...

If you have the theme set to 'Blue' instead of 'Site default' the logo changes but nothing else does.

I've been using a mix of Citadel and Vallejo for my DEldar, gotta say I really do prefer the Vallejo stuff. Bought a bunch of empty dropper bottles to transfer my Citadel paints into, too.

This new school was hit by ransomware a while before I started here and is in dire need of most of its servers replacing, but the VM host here isn't really up to scratch. In my last place we had a Dell VRTX and I've heard some chatter about people using SANs as VM hosts, but I must admit whilst I'm fairly clued up about running Hyper-V, I'm not hugely in the know about the hardware to host it on. It's probably going to need to be something fairly beefy, as I'm looking to be hosting SIMS, 2 file servers, an application & print server, SCCM, one or two DC's and a RDS gateway.

We've loaned a couple out to pupils this week. Again, no insurance, but we've made them sign typical Ts&Cs (it's still ours, you may be held liable for damage, etc)

Is Tim at least being safe? Clearly this the more important matter.
