  1. It can, but I'm guessing they're talking about authentication for the Wireless prior to Smoothwall authentication. We leave our BYOD network as an open wireless network, when a user connects and then tries browsing the web they get the Smoothwall SSL login prompt at which point they enter their username & password and can then start browsing the internet on their device with their normal filter policy. I've created a Smoothwall policy towards the top policy of the web filter policy to block everything for Year7-11 students on the BYOD subnet (added as a location) as we only allow Sixth Form and Staff on the BYOD network,
  2. Yes Veeam does this. It used to do this by default using the Reversed incremental option, but I believe now uses standard Incremental as the default option as it's better for backing up to Tape and remote sites. Couple the reversed incremental option with their built in deduplication & compression + VMware change block tracking and you end up with some very fast and space efficient backups. Admittedly this probably isn't much use in this circumstance as Veeam will only work with VMware & Hyper-V VMs.
  3. Something like smoothwall would be great for this, very similar to what we do for our guest networks. Our smoothwall box is the gateway device for these networks and provides dhcp & dns proxy for the networks. It's set up as a transparent proxy so no configuration is required on the clients. A cheap/free way of doing it might be to set up Linux box running squid/dhcp/dns to do the same. Have two interfaces: one to your main network and one to the guest vlan.
  4. You should be able to change it in chart options in the advanced tab. I would also check the latency in Datastore view.
  5. I think he means that there's no fault tolerance provided by RAID0, if one drive fails in the array that's the whole array gone. If it's just fast reads you require, RAID5 would prove better from a fault tolerance point of view and you'd only lose the overall capacity of one of the drives and a bit of read performance (assuming your using 3 or more disks in this array). The only time I've seen RAID0 recommended is on VDI hosts where extremely fast IO is needed and there are multiple hosts for fault tolerance. Very similar to @gshaw we're a VMware shop with 3 hosts running the Essentials Plus bundle with the Veeam Essentials bundle to match. Very happy with the set up.
  6. Yep AD logins, standard AD/OD magic triangle set up. We have accounts set up as mobile accounts so when a user logs in it syncs their mac homedir from the AFP share on the Xserve down to the local mac hard drive and will then sync changes in the background and also a final sync on log off. Seems to work well from a performance point of view as the user is essentially working from the hard disk rather than the live network share. The Apple script we use to mount staff SMB home drives as a drive on the desktop is as follows (for the students it's Students-2012$ etc depending on year of entry): set MyName to do shell script "whoami" try mount volume "smb://FILESERVER/Staff$/" & MyName & "/Documents" end try There's probably a better way to do it, but I couldn't find an easy way at the time to get the current username so I resorted to using the whoami nix command.
  7. I purchased these ones a few months back - TP-Link TL-PA411KIT 500Mbps Mini Powerline Adapter.. | Ebuyer.com Have not had any major issues with them, and the connection has been a lot more reliable than the wireless bridge I had going from our router downstairs to my man cave. I didn't see the point in buying the versions with the gigabit ports since looking at reviews, unless you have them plugged in next to each other you're unlikely to max out the 10/100 port. I'm finding I get around 6-7 MB/s between one connected upstairs and the other downstairs.
  8. Bump - any more takers...
  9. Personally I think fair dos, it was at a critical point in the championship. Shame for Massa as he has been driving well recently, but you kind of sign yourself up for this when you're the number 2 driver at Ferrari. Anything that keeps it interesting till the final race is okay by me, didn't want to see Vettel run away with the Championship already even through really it's going to take something to fail on Vettel's car or the predicated rain to shake things up for Alonso to have a good chance of winning it. Did anyone see Martin Brundel's pit walk? I thought it was quite funny when he butted into Vettel's interview with David Coultard (BBC) and Vettel carried on speaking to David as he was first, and then Martin comes out with "they’re not live anyway" or something like that.
  10. We do this with Snow Leopard and have their home drives mounted via AFP and then use an Apple Script on login to mount their Windows my documents.
  11. None as far as I'm aware, works with all major browsers. The only thing with the free certificates is that the validity period is only 1 year so you will have to renew them each year.
  12. Try StartSSL for free SSL certificates, if it does not qualify. I used one of these certificates with HAP previously with no problems.
  13. Check your content modification policies. I had some issues with Google Maps a few months back and I think it was either the SafeSearch or Recommended Security rules policy that was causing the problem. Try disabling some of them to see if it helps, if so create a custom rule with the URLs to exclude then add to the top of the policy list.
  14. You can't beat a bit of GhetoVCB, it is the ultimate VMWare backup script especially for the free version of ESXi!
  15. I'll have to admit I've not been particularly impressed with Terastations, they make okay general backup devices but I've found they're pretty slow in actual usage. I've always heard good things about the Iomega devices. We did do a similar thing with putting a large NAS in another building for backup and in the end we went with a custom built linux server which gave us the flexibility we needed.
  16. You need to look at Software Restriction Policies in Group Policy. Domain Users can still run EXE's unless locked down with SRP. As long as the program doesn't require access to areas they would not have access to as a standard domain user such as C:Program Files etc then things like Teamviewer will be able to be run.
  17. Have a look at the fix here - http://www.edugeek.net/forums/smoothwall-direct-support/103317-ios6-hotfix.html
  18. I've always used the IOMeter template on one of the VMware storage performance threads - VMware Communities: Open unofficial storage performance... Handy to be able to compare it to what others are getting.
  19. Are you using SSL Login as your authentication method? By default smoothwall uses the IP rather than the FQDN for this. Speak to Smoothwall they should be able to modify one of the files which changes this behaviour.
  20. The problem is they can't guarantee places and apparently they have less parking spaces than before or something along those lines. Along with no internet access to top it off! I will update if there ends up being some spaces we can use.
  21. Bookings for the meeting taking place on Thursday 22nd November are now open: NetworkNorthants - November 2012 - Eventbrite The meeting will be held at Riverside House, Northampton. Unfortunately it doesn't look like we will be able to use their car park, so the pay & display one across the road would probably be the best bet. As usual the meeting will approximately run from 1-3pm with the option for further discussion with the speakers and each other afterwards. Agenda is as follows: Welcome Windows 8 (Sean O’Shea from Microsoft & Ben Brown from HP) BYOD: A Blessing or a Curse? (Eddie Felmer from Ruckus) Apple Volume Licensing (Robert Woods from KRCS) AOB Hope you can attend!
  22. Ahh okay, we're using our 5500G's to do the layer 3 routing.
  23. You need to define the ip address of the switch on the VLAN interface. For example our management VLAN is 20 so the config for our v1910 is: interface Vlan-interface20 ip address 10.0.20.61 255.255.255.0 After that I'm able to telnet or use the web interface using 10.0.20.61.
  24. What files are you looking to transfer between the iPad and network? I think the File Browser app or Webdav are probably the best options for this. Possibly even Dropbox set up on a network share?
  25. I don't think it's freely available they just emailed it to me when we had the above issue. @tech_guy that's the same KB we followed but we only ended up needing to the "Apply Patch 14265 (Re-Indexes the SQL database)" step.
