I'd go with a decent UPS, if your directly in the mains and you get a big surge it won't just take out the secondary supply, it'll cook the whole lot as you loose all the protection. We keep the rubbish UPSs on secondary supplies if they are still about and use a decent one for the primary. It can increase runtime too.

It probably encountered 'slightly' dodgey power conditions, couldn't cope and shut off completely. We had an hp one that was total rubbish for that. That is why we only get APC stuff now as it can at least do its job.

Right, after six years I thought they may have bucked up their installers but I was wrong. Last time I installed it, massive issues with the DB. This time, Its the DB again. Using TMG 2010 on Windows Server 2008 (would use R2 if TMG did not choke on it). Try to install Triton and it assumes that the DB is already installed. It isn't. After way too long messing about with it, turns out it only detects and uses the 32bit version of SQL Express 2008 R2. May help someone else getting stupid pointless undocumented errors from the hopeless installer. EDIT: Oh and after manually installing 32bit SQL express 2k8 r2 remember to enable tcp/ip comms to it and give it a different port number as TMG takes the default. You'll need to do this for the Web Security component to talk to it as it can't use shared memory. Love the irony, the 'issues' are caused by the fact the Windows follows the standards in order to protect users from potentially malicious actions. If your using TMG you can use SSL inspection and rewrite safe search to on all the time, I think smoothwall does this too.

Pricing for them parallel imported into NZ has just come out through a NZ supplier $899 ex the 15% GST for the 32GB or $1050 ex for the 64GB. Comparatively the Samsung Ativ is also $1050 but its Atom, has a stylus and a tablet and 64GB, the Acer510 is sitting at $920, also Atom, also 64GB. So: The Windows 8 version that works with everything is cheaper than the cut down ARM only version. Result, not touching the epic ripoff that is Surface even for personal use. The more featureful versions are cheaper and better. Just ashame they don't have that nice keyboard cover.

Yea, this will effect schools on the edge a bit more down the line as they are the ones who have to scrape working machines out of the detritus that is left over after several years of use, this just makes even less parts replaceable and recoverable. You can guarantee that the price won't go down at all or anywhere near as much as the decrease in utility for that kind of usage.

Not sure if its the same thing but I had something similar with a D-Link PCMCIA card and D-Link home router and XP (it was a long time ago). It could not handle the encryption properly as the 802.11x stuff broke. I think there was a service that kicked in to try and enable it (11x or WLAN encryption or something). By disabling that service it allowed the connection to work fine, also removed any bindings from the wireless adapter to 802.11x. May not be related given the time difference but the symptoms sounded familiar.

How are you attaching, I usually shove the end of the hanger into the end of the cable then excessively tape its junction into a cone shape, you could also try a small hook bent in the end to give it more pulling power.

How big is the hole, perhaps some reinforced hose or plastic pipe to gently wiggle through effectively your own conduit inside the hole to put some more cable through.

Yea, sorry, should have said not to bother with notepad. It tries to load the whole thing into memory in the most inefficient way possible. Another text editor may be much better. If you have physical access to it it may even have a local interface and dvd writer to output stuff depending on what type it has.

Have you tried cracking open one of the files in a text editor and looking for any common strings at the start of the file which you can search for online. Also does the DVR have any software avalible for viewing the DVR files or the DVR itself?

If I recall correctly it does not work and requires exceptions to prevent needing auth and maybe even transparent proxy: iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting plus: iTunes Store I think I remember Smoothwall having to scramble to add a new category when people started deciding to try and use iPads in schools. The exception on the managed provider may not be global so you may have to ask them to enable the hole to allow Apple stuff to through without supervision.

To be fair you really have to document everything with Linux, you can use a wider brush with windows as its just add interface here with this ip instead of recompile this for this MTU and specific custom firmware revision of the network card. I do agree that documentation is really important but a lot can also be done with saved configs and robust systems along with an overview. Stuff like puppet which can do all the mental config again for you are also helpful if you have a box of infinite settings to deal with.
