+1 one of the biggest criticisms about tablets is that they are poorly suited to extensive work, if the tablet and laptop can be successfully cross pollenated it will actually spur progress.

The licencing terms have remained static as far as we know, it's unlikely they changed it just for Google, just now. Besides if they could have laid blame on MS for it there would have been something on their blogs. I'm guessing that they are actually starting to interpret W8 and W8Phone as a possible issue down the road and this is just a little road block they can throw in the way. It will be a while before 8 picks up the numbers to be a viable mobile threat but the fact that MS has unified the platform and actually stuck with it for a second version. It's more like Apple removing support for Flash, there was a defacto standard that did everything relatively well when used right and they are pulling that as opposed to Silverlight that did not have huge usage and installed footprint. EAS is in so many phones and is the best protocol for active email accounts with push, calanders etc. as it does it all in one protocol. IMAP is ancient and although it does support rudimentary push for email it is badly implemented if at all by most installations and many clients. As EAS has been mature for push stuff for longer so the client devices support it better.

The limitation is from it needing to 'see' a couple of external addresses. Double NAT on the addresses from outside to inside should trick the machine into playing ball. I'm sure that sufficient hacking about with a Linux firewall dist would enable it or probably three or four lines on a decent Cisco router. OSX is not intuitive to everyone, lots of Apple's intuitiveness is to do with the Ad/Product Training that they screen on infinite repeat on every channel in the world. It is more intuitive for some but I have seen just as many people baffled with OSX as by W7. The other thing to take into account with Styluses is that there are different types. There are the capacitive type which are basically just a capacitive blob on the end of a stick, usually a bit thick and are not hugely better than just using a finger as you can't rest your hand on it or anything as there is no differentiation between the inputs. The second kind are the ones with a digitizer grid in behind which are massively more precise, differentiated from touch and can even, depending on the device and stylus it can even take into account pressure and angle which make them much better for precision and any art stuff if you need it. I think one of the android Samsung tablets has this kind and the Surface pro along with several of the other W8 tabs do. These are usually Wacom digitisers which is what the artists use and for general note taking mean you can actually rest your hand on it while writing reliably. It all comes down to what she needs, the ASUS, Samsung and Acer ones also have the keyboard battery thing which doubles the battery life, the Acer one does not have a proper digital stylus though and you'd end up needing to use one of the imprecise capacitive ones to write on it.

The Surface RT is out but has no stylus, the Surface Pro may do but is not out yet and will have a four hour battery life. Samsung does a W8 tablet with a stylus and I think ASUS does to which could be worth a look, Atom CPUs so not ultra powerful but 9h+ of battery life and support for old windows apps to.

Yeap go with the polystyrene first as it will be insulation that is the problem, personally I'd go with Poly, building foil then maybe even glass batts before adding another bit of wood underneath it. Once that is done check the drain holes in the windows joinery are not blocked. May be forth trying to get some insulation in the bit above too if it has not been insulated. If it is already double glased you may get a little extra from a third layer but given the thermal sink that is the lack of insulation of the rest of it, it would make no difference till the rest is fixed up a bit. I think it will be much better to try and fix the problem rather than treat the symptom by burning through towels and power running all sorts of gear to simply alleviate and not solve the problem.

Umm, this sounds like it could be a Windows CE device in which case you would want the old mobile device manager stuff. It includes drivers for a bunch of interfaces like this.

MS in their infinite Balmer based idiocy killed slipstreaming. You can 'slipstream' by installing a copy, running the SP, running sysprep and then taking an image then placing that on the DVD in place of the media wim. You can offline patch some smaller patches to the image without this but there is still a toll at install time. Same deal with Office 2007 on where it manually installs each patch after install. Best/only sensible way is to download the latest integrated version from the MS site. Have not heard of 7 lite but gave up stripping stuff out of OSs for general use a while ago due to weird issues manifesting later.

Umm, this ^, TBH is may be the cheapest. That box looks poorly insulated, especially the base hence the condensation and moisture leaching. You may need to insulate it and add a second layer of wood. Add some ventilation and perhaps double glaze it. A standard window may be cheaper.
