I'm beginning to wonder if haswell itself is a snakes on plane situation, it has been built up massively and rumoured in devices but is still not released or even firm on the delivery date yet. Vaporware is the term that comes to mind. I could be wrong but the fact they are retrofitting old tech indicates they may have over promised a bit.

Outlook.com should give you free integrated calendars also but Office365 is free now anyway.

It's not so bad on a laptop with one screen, the core of W8 is superior for efficiency and speed but UI wise W7 is better on multiple screens, you can use the W8 start menu replacements but you loose a bunch of the actual desktop functionality with a base install. That is why we are not rushing it out to desktops. Any tablets we have however are being W8ted ASAP as it is really good for that. They are both fine as OSs, uniformity is a false economy and the benefits of W8 on tablets outweight the 'fun' of 'teaching' staff the differences between the two. W8 does prompt you with the names too, Windows Key then start typing, it will happily bring up a list of programs that match.

Their actions hint differently, there is nothing stopping them from releasing steam to desktop mode on W8, it is the lack of 'control' that they are wining about with regard to metro/RT. This open thing is all well and good but their reason for it is bogus. It will probably work out well for Linux in the short term but their actions betray their asperations.

It all depends on how 'open' they are with their code, sure it is a bigger market but a more locked in market may be more profitable. All is needs is one or two components like the horrific pulseaudio (strangly presient given it performance) or a gpu driver to break stuff.. Console exclusive etc. This is not about freedom, it is about profit. If Valve/Steam see greater value in locking people in the benefit will be at best partial. 80% of the way there is still great progress but it is still 20% short if it requires ConsoleX11 TM to work. You are still shut out, just less so. You have to expect their console platform to be preferred and have some advantages, they are still a company after all. It may well be hacked, that is probably their plan as they can easily wait for the last 20% of the code to be delivered to them with a bow on. OSS is not the way companies work in general, PROFIT++ is the language they program in, unless it is a dropkick into the black figures of profit it is unlikely they will bother. Already they have probably harvested several hundred thousand dollars of dev time off the community to make a console easier. It is down to their accountants if they pay that back with support or more barely veiled tasks for the developers to do in order to join the party they helped organise.

It really is not that bad. A little clumsy on a desktop but great on a phone or tablet.

I don't think it will really help Linux though, it will help the appliance - where Linux is strong already - and give the dwindling population of gamers another option. Linux is a base not a destination, cheap routers and phones use it by the tens of thousands but not because it is Linux, because it is a cheap framework to build upon for an actual UI and experience. Linux I still like assembly for usability in comparison to the other options.

I am always up for a spot of teacher bashing given the trials that they put me through but I thought I'd take the time to remember those good teachers that I had met along the way while in school as a comparison. I was lucky enough to have a few good teachers throughout my education which gave me hope for the entire species A physics teacher that had us read and discuss The Physics of Star Trek: Lawrence M. Krauss, Stephen Hawking: Amazon.com: Books and had everyone bake a cake for the class as part of the study of the application of energy to materials. An economics teacher that got us to do reports on the economic impacts of things that actually effected the country as a whole and who randomly taught us gearing with Lego as a parable to economic theory. For every entitled narrow minded teacher that screams about their lack of ability to plug in a power cord there are at least 0.25 ( ) teachers forging the tools for logical and creative thought into their students minds. If only for balance this thread should stand for all those teachers who do a great job and inspire rather than damage the youth under their tutorledge. I hope others can chime in with their own experiences of great teachers, if only to provide a comforting light in the darkness.

Apple is all about image, they can't do something entirely new as they may fail and destroy all value in their brand, they can only increment existing tech where there is much less chance of failure. They will watch the android/Linux console, find any weakness in it and then patch it and call it a revolution. Apple are cowards who just critice others and add a new scarf then call it invention/fashion.

Wood is not conductive, as long as it does not hear up enough to catch fire, and as long as any paint is non-conductive you should be fine. There is someone on the forum who mounted a suite worth of PCs in wood cases without metal ones. Works fine, just keep conductivity and sticky student fingers out.

The Zen was one of the first, it concerned itself with openness and universality, look where that got it, brand and restrict the balls off it then you end up with the apple hardware and app store. Enough sheep pledge their undieing loyalty to them and the other major players follow suit with the same tactic, humanity as a whole seems to want to be subdugated, who are the profit seeking companies to argue, it's what the populace wants after all.

Marketing BS :-) that is the differentiation between most products. Hardware wise its all very similar, it's the marketing BS that separates it all. Pad, pod, book, slate. The hardware is effectively the same, it's the software that is a dead end or not. It's all kind of Zen, go with the flow and all that. Everything corp and manageable runs MS, RDP and active sync area still the answer, the difference is how the question is phrased.

Yea, pretty sure most of their objection is based on their loosing total control and the new limits on how pervasive their DRM can be. Generally steam is alright bit I've had DRM cripple computers. Supreme Commander two being a good example.

I still have not found a rt device cheaper than the x86 ones, why not just go with the atom ones or are you guys way less boned buy suppliers and your government than us, on average the atom ones are 20% less than the arm ones in NZ.

Apparently they have just managed to make hid LEDs that can match the output of halogen with similar heat output. Despite their efficiency heat output is still the main issue with large heatsinks needed for current gen led replacements, at least the ones we can get here.
