You'll have a hell of a time finding drivers for an os that old on modern hardware. At the least you may need sata drivers to make it boot even with ahci off, unless there is an ide compatibility mode still built in.

Group policy can block USB device types and require encryption on windows 7 or above. Intel vpro machines also have a bit of software. You may also be able to disable them in the individual PC's BIOS but that is just turning them off rather than a specific block.

Oops, re-read. You should not be connecting the jump leads to the negative on the battery but rather a metal point on the chassis like the engine block. Otherwise you are in danger of cooking the ECU even with surge protected leads.

You're obviously not a member of the Firefox or chrome dev teams then, that is their entire modus operandi. Users do care when their OS is completely foreign and unprecedented to them along with looking like it came from the stone age with 16 colours. The forum may like new OSes and the enhanced managabiliy and reliability simply for the ease of management and efficiency for the schools. You definitely lean in the other direction completely dismissing the OS and attempting to push everything to external providers or services that buy into the even more clickish browser as an OS, WebKit or nothing crowd.

All of this is kind of academic anyway as the really difficult stuff is going to require good old fashioned research to and with the device Id, name etc.

I use IE, 9 and 10 are fine and as above the others are all horrible to manage centrally. Congrats to the site and its members for creating such a community.
