  1. Sounds like shadow copies to me, I bought an extra 1TB drive to host the shadow copies a few years ago, bit of overkill I know but it solved the problem.
  2. I'm currently booked to do the 70-680 next month, you really just need the MS book MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-680): Configuring Windows 7 and comes with practice tests. No need to buy anything else as there is loads of free stuff on the net. Bibble-IT.com | My collection of Sys-Admin workarrounds and tips is one I'm currently looking at. Of course a decent spec machine and some virtualisation to get the practice in.
  3. We had one here and also struggled with drivers for it, last ditch attempt was to point it at our driver packs initially downloaded for XP, guess what it found all the drivers. Search for driver packs download/extract and point win 7 on the amilo to the directory. Even found the sound drivers which were the ones we were stuck on.
  4. You learn something every day in this job. Thanks Gatt.
  5. There is a fix for this and I applied it many years ago you have to disable autodetecthardware or something similar to that, just found it WDSUTIL /set-server /architecturediscovery:no or it may need to be set to yes, can't remember which way round it is.
  6. Also delete the SRV records, not sure if they will disappear by themselves.
  7. This version does not have PEIMG included, DISM command or that GUI given before will be needed.
  8. You could script it, For example the user logs on to the domain with their domain user account you include a logon batch file to copy/move the contents from the local admins account to their server my docs. Providing they have been using same machine to login as local admin.
  9. Don't know what version of WAIK you have but in version for win7 you need to be using DISM commands for the image, perhaps your boot image was taken from win 7, I'm not 100% on this but I think you should be using the DISM command.
  10. Sounds like you have acitivated kms server on all your clients. You don't need to do anything at all on the clients if the kms server is setup correctly. Provided you have not entered a MAK code in the imaging process. But even then sysprep would strip that out.
  11. Download and instructions are here http://tsaysoft.com/mysysprep2/ basically it replaces the sysprep.exe in windows 7 and allows you to add: %Please input a computer name% into the sysprep unattended.xml file.
  12. Jesus 15 days to get MCTIP Enterprise server admin 6k are you having a laugh. Buy the books and do some hard studying and save yourself the 5.5k.
  13. At the time we started deploying win 7 we came up against the problem of computer naming, seem to remember an article which described how to do it in MDT2010 or it could have been windows system image manager. As you point out sted at the time MDT looked far too overly complicated to do what we wanted to achieve, which was one base image to roll out across the school.
  14. Gatts solution on XP did work and I used it, but for win 7 it does not work, there is a convoluted task sequence you can do in MDT2010 to prompt for computer name but the easiest way is with mysysprep2.
  15. You can prestage but I have always found the typing a computer name the easiest to manage especially if machines get moved around frequently, not that it does here mind. You don't need mysysprep2 if you are going to prestage.
  16. If you use a remake of sysprep called mysysprep2 you can. We are using it here and it prompts for computer name.
  17. You are right but does anybody buy cals on this premis, I guess there will be a lot of under licensed organisations out there.
  18. So if a guest speaker or teacher comes to school with their own laptop and it gets dhcp lease you need a cal for this?. I sort of remember from the past that printers need a cal but does anybody bother to buy them?
  19. Mine is on the C drive, think at the time I tried specifying it through WDS but did not seem to work for some reason.
  20. If you use mysysprep2 you can get it to prompt for machine name. http://tsaysoft.com/mysysprep2/
  21. If you go CC4 do you not get 2008r2 and win 7?
  22. I might be off the mark here but would the teacher licence on the pupils laptop not fulfill the OP's requirement. The pupil can then look at any screen of any teacher for £199 as all the clients are free. From a security standpoint ABTutor is highly configurable in terms of what the pupil may do.
  23. No the £199 is for the teacher machine but includes unlimited clients and the tutor control can work from USB memory stick so is highly flexible.
  24. 1000 pupils 400 pc's 2 DC's 1 Exchange server 1 ISA server 1 Print server (Old demoted DC) Looking to virtualise the print server and ISA over the summer and maybe the exchange server.
  25. Not at all, I came to this school with what I would class as a decent skill set and ran an RM network for 3 years, solely because as you pointed out the ICT teacher needed to teach and did not have time for the ever growing network. It would also depend on the size of the network whether implementing a vanilla type would be of any advantage i.e. you have 100 machines and you go vanilla then you need someone relatively expensive to manage it it might not be worth it.
