@nephilim: I have all the manuals in pdf format if you require them. If you have used CC3 in depth then its much the same but better as you well know from your contact with CC4, unlike CC3 though everything is postgres SQL backend and therefore you cannot go changing things in the AD like you could with CC3. Me n @webman are loving its functionality as will @Sylv3r before long

@all: Nice that some of us have big enough budgets to do these things, unfortunately my team and I have very little to do this summer due to the fact we migrated to a new platform Windows 7 (in 9 days) and hardware with all the added services in February half term hehe! I really admire John Bishop, he had me in fits at the London Palladium and Blackpool on Michael MacIntyre's road show. Excellent delivery and just down to earth with real live events that make both sexes laugh. Billy Connelly used to be a favourite of mine in the early days but went off the boil.

@CatherineMay: Less than 3 seconds here, so I would conclude that it is either the database that needs re-indexing which has already been covered or as @loculzuk has mentioned your server is not up to the job. We have it running as VM with only one CPU at the moment with 8Gb RAM looking at increasing the CPUs to at least 2 to see if it does make any difference.

@X-13: Where are these computers going? If they are being recycled by a legit company then they should be offering the data wiping service for free along with the WEEE certification. If not then the best way is take a hammer to the HDD, quicker and cheaper, I know my school wouldn't pay overtime for DATA wiping when it isn't necessary. I cannot see the need unless they are going out of the school which would then be a revert to hammer tactics, job done Always weigh the HDDs in for scrap also, more money to the school. Only today have I been to see IPads in actual use during lessons, using apple AP's and running through smoothwall box for internet security. I was told that using an IPhone security app to lock down all the IPads and just one registered macbook to download apps and sync them to all the IPads. Only thing they couldn't lock down it seems is the passkey to log into the IPad but as they didn't set one that was not a problem. As for storage and collaboration they got all the teachers to create dropbox accounts and then created a school account with a shared folder for all the staff to sync and upload files. They also created a single school twitter account so everyone could tweet to the same account from the IPads. Some of the lessons looked fun for the students especially Geography with the OS maps app and the 3D earth app which showed the latest earthquakes around the Earth etc. Still not too sure whether they will keep impressing but we are looking into using them and the students SmartPhones to create and share materials. Will be an interesting 6 months hehe!

I too had this experience with HMV just before Christmas last, I had spotted the complete series of "MASH" which is an American comedy, based on a medical core in Korea. It was priced at £39.95 for the compete 1 - 11 series around 50 discs (approx). I didn't buy it at the time as my wife said I might get it from the kids for Christmas anyway I didn't so went back to the HMV but they had sold out, i was told by the assistant if I went to their online store I could obtain it from there, looked online and it was £120.00 so then the guy said that they could order it in special for me................................at the same price as it was advertised at on their website store. I have waited and lucky for me it has come back around again at the price of £39.95 and I have bought it this time.

My thoughts on this are if it is alright with the teaching staff and they are going to manage it within a controlled classroom environment then if the students are educated to use the devices in a creative rather than destructive way then there should be no reason why not. We are looking into new ways of adapting social networking sites around our teaching and learning as collaborative tools to enhance the students personal learning. I feel that like others do that if you restrict too much the students will only go out of their way to bypass the restrictions and disrupt the lessons thus inflaming the teachers and other staff. I am not saying this is the right way but we are running controlled testing at this moment.

We are also looking into IPads or similar with a view to promote good teaching and learning collaboration between the staff and students, looking also at leasing from Apple 32 IPads for use within the school across the curriculum subjects. @Sylv3r: Great minds think alike

@all: We use RMs built-in printer credits which after consultation with the SLT implemented a strategy which had been drawn up by us which allowed only the students and ICT staff to print from the ICT-suites under controlled credits scheme. The rest of the school subjects have their own printers which only the subject staff can print to and they maintain the toners from their budgets. The main staff work area and the reprographics are the 2 places where the staff can print from in colour. Technology and Art have a managed large print contract with United Carlton which they pay for out of their budgets at less than a penny a print for both A3 and A4 Credits are allocated thus: All staff = 200 per week SLT = 1000 per month Students years 7,8 and 9 = 50 per week students years 10 and 11 = 100 per week The students can request more through the teachers who can then allocate the credits or through us if no teacher available. Budget spent on toners for the IT suites this coming year = £2.5k down from last years £4k This has been achievable through the use of various in house built apps which allow the staff to view and mark work within the students home directories which can be accessed remotely from home which stops the students having to print work off to give to the teachers to take home to mark. Also a better use of the VLE has enabled homework to be done from anywhere and from any device capable of running a web browser. I have been consulting with the SLT on a scheme to further enable the staff and students to access printing via MFDs situated around the school and eventually eradicating the need for laser-jet printers except for the admin staff. Works incredibly well and so far only one senior member of staff has complained but they have been dealt with by the SLT.

@andyturpie: Apparently CC3 driver installation manager sometimes has problems reading certain .inf files for certain drivers, there has been a workaround for this which you will find discussed here: RM Communities You may need to register if you are not a member. Good luck

@andyturpie: Most of the new laptops today will not support running XP as they are compliant with Windows 7 drivers but if you look around for slightly older laptops in the Toshiba range you will find that they build on quite nicely. Other than that I think that you will be struggling to find one that will build straight out of the box without having to inject the drivers into the build. Good luck

@ihaveaproblem: Have a look in Tesco at the varied selection especially the Technika brand, i have just purchased the 42" LCD model for £325 and I am sure they do the 32" for £199 and they may do a 37" for a little extra. The performance and sound from them is excellent with freeview HD built in along with network interface and many other inputs. excellent value for money.

Will be buying no more laptops as we have remote desktops which also does away with the need to carry USB pendrives and the like when the staff can log in remotely and use everything just as they do at work. Looking at a few handheld devices such as Ipads, Iphones etc and integrating within the network (Will be speaking to SLT and delivering presentation). As for SSDs we would like to try them just to see what the difference would be to our already excellent bootup and login times using standard sata drives. It could only improve them yeah! (anyone of the sponsors willing to lend us a few for trial? nudge! nudge!) Have a great weekend all and remember! "Let's do it to them before they do it to us"

@witch: It will be part of the prism and if it is like certain Hitachi ones then you would be better off purchasing a new one as we do our own deep cleaning and this is what we have found to be the case. If on the other hand it has the different coloured glass slides like the Sanyo's then you can use propanol and special lens cleaning clothes to effectively bring up as good as new, we have deep cleaned around 10 lately which only took us 20 mins each. Have a look on the internet to see if someone has opened one of those models up and have a go yourself, it will cost you nothing but time
