The first school that I worked at ran 100% Linux on all the student desktops. Although they complained a lot and said it was carp, in reality for what these students did - web browsing and office it was perfectly fine. There were a few problems with them bringing in files from their home PCs - mostly involving strange fonts. Every student was given a CD with the windows ports of the software that was on the student machines. OpenOffice, GIMP, some mind mapping software, etc. If they used that, there would be no problems. The other problem we had was reading CDs coming from a PC. Windows disregards the Rainbow book standard in that you can access an unfinalised CD. Simples! When students came in waving a CD they couldn't read, I'd finalise it for them. The science department had some simulated experiments that they were very attached too. This was Windows 98 software. When I started, the room where is was running was Windows 98. One particular experiment would crash the box (BSOD) and the students would run this so they could spend 10 minutes chatting to their friend while it rebooted. They were really upset when I installed Linux and had the software running under Wine. The experiment would just sit there doing nothing and the program carried on running, allowing they to select another experiment. We used to run sessions for parents at the start of the year in which we let them loose on our systems. After they logged on I'd say "Let's all go to the BBC website. You'll need a web browser." They would all look a bit bewildered until they saw a section "Web Browsers" on the menu. We would also do a couple of exercises involving writing letters. Parents would leave wondering what all the fuss was about as they could see the system worked fine for students.

VBS here. Like most schools, our computers have the room number as part of the host name and the vbs script checks this and assigns the appropriate printer. The printer and room assignments are all held in a MySql database and when you change an entry, the printer script is automatically updated. So it's very easy to change a the printer assignment for a room if a printer has failed.

All our governors have college logins and email addresses. There is a governor email group but I don't think it is ever used. What really happens is the Principals PA has a list of their private email addresses and she sends to that. They still need to login to the network though to see various briefings which are posted to the intranet.

I'm thankful we have much better lights these days. Dynamo lights were fine downhill but terrible going up. Battery lights weren't much brighter than a candle.

I ride a Brompton, which is very low. I have steady lights in the standard positions, and flashing lights on the handlebar and saddle. I wear a reflective Sam Browne and I have reflective leg bands. My friend who also rides a Brompton has a Zound Air Horn but I'm not that aggressive!

You are probably correct. Check the date of the cam footage - 11/11/2015. Why has it taken a month to come to light? I suspect it was allow Stockdale time to edit the footage into a commercial to put on his website. BYW, his website has an official sounding title, the use of which is very dodgy. To quote from the BBC "Footage shows the lorry apparently bashing his car as it passed at about 20:40 GMT, and repeating the action 14 minutes later." Once the lorry had gotten past and sped off at 62mph, how did Stockdale then catch up with him 15 minutes later? I suspect because Stockdale wanted to stir more trouble, and more publicity.

Hermes are dire. A couple of months ago I ordered some clothes and as I knew it would most likely be heaving down with rain, I specified "Leave in the blue bin". This was clearly highlighted in bold yellow on the parcel, and still the driver left it by the bin and it all got wet. Luckily, the stuff wasn't damaged. On the plus side, the company refunded me and let me keep the clothes. Result! Last week I ordered some more shirts from the same company and, once again "Leave in the blue bin". They are getting better - they left it in the green bin. That bin gets a bit smelly but at least the parcel was dry.

Last night I was in Brum negotiating the roundabout with the Chinese Pagoda on it. Brummies will know that at the mo this area is even more of a nightmare than usual, with loads of extra traffic owing to the endless roadworks related to the demolition of the central library. I'm sitting there, waiting for a break in the traffic. One appears and I go. Luckily I saw the idiot on the bike, no lights, dark clothes, chatting away on his phone as he wobbled across in front of me. It was a very near miss! Unfortunately, I was in no position to head off after him and point out his attempt at a Darwin Award. When I ride my bike at night, I have four lights on the bike, at different heights and often lights on me too. I also wear a reflective Sam Browne belt. Why are there so many idiots who ride bikes at night without lights?

On Quest recently there was a series about Kings Heavy Haulage. One of the tough truckers wore Crocs but his were bright yellow. I doubt he got many snide comments about his choice of footwear!
