I would join in with a good yarn, but I'm a bit beweft at the moment as things start to unravel around me.

Since 1st July last year (when the new printers went in) we've printed 3,582,775 sheets between 1,992 users, just over 14,200 sheets per day. 3,000,000 has been done by reprographics on behalf of the faculties. The highest individual user is 21,055 sheets and she is a factor of 3 higher than the next highest. The 3.5 million is split roughly 50/50 between printing and copying. I think it's up about 30% over last year, and the year isn't done yet!

We used to use PCounter but moved to PaperCut when we switched printer supplier. PaperCut is more comprehensive than Pcounter. Of course, with comprehensiveness comes complexity. Students are allocated an amount of money at the start of the year. Art/graphics students get a larger credit. When they run out, they can pay for extra. (This works well.) Staff are allocated an amount too. When they run out they can ask for more and it is automatically granted. When we switched to PaperCut, the idea was to reduce staff printing. When they ran out, staff were supposed to go and plead their case for more credit to SMT. SMT quickly became disinterested and so the whole staff printer monitoring system is a joke and printing has increased this year by a huge amount. The new printer company charge us about 50% less per sheet but the overall printing costs have increased by about 30% (I think.)

+1 for Joomla. We abandoned WP (so -1 for WP!) on our intranet, firstly in favour of SP (which lasted about 6 months before we binned it for being too cumbersome) and then moved to Joomla. I completely disagree with ataylor - there are many excellent free plugins. There are some good paid for ones too. I've found Joomla documentation to be very clear.

It's much tougher in the real world, depending on what you do. It really isn't the end of the world if all of the IT systems were down in a school. Teaching could go on the old fashioned was (although teachers might disagree). When I worked in facilities management, if the systems weren't there after the overnight processing had completed, the shops may not open, the manufacturing process doesn't happen, and somebody starts loosing money. You won't half know about it if this happens. I used to support a credit card authorisation system, which handled all of the shops at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stanstead, as well as HMV, Adlers and many others. Our maintenance window was 00:30 to 1:00 Monday mornings. Again if the system wasn't back at 1:00, there was big trub! Also, you might find yourself on call - it's great going in at 3:00am trying to sort something out, when your brain is still tucked up in bed. On the other hand, the pay is better (usually), lunches are better (generally), and you might get put up in posh hotels. I once had to go to London for a 9:30am meeting. It was all done and dusted by 10:00am. I phoned the boss in Birmingham to see what I should do. Since there was nothing I could do at head office, he said "Have a day in London." I said, "Ooo nice, I can go to the ballet." He said, "Sure - and do charge it to the company", so I did. I can't see that happening in education.

With Summer Time starting in three weeks, it seems as though it might not be all that good for us - How Daylight Saving Time Increases the Risk of Having a Stroke - HowStuffWorks. Mind you, I'm going to enjoy the extra daylight hours. When it was introduced in South Australia, there were letters to the press saying how the cows would get confused and the extra daylight would make the paint peel off the verandah.

I don't know why the BBC picked "Naked Gun" as the highlighted film - surely it should have been "Cool Hand Luke"? He was in loads of things - his TV series "The Blue Knight" was very good, more than your average cop show.

I've been watching ReactOS since 1998 when it was a W95 clone. It worked quite well although I just ran W98 in a v/m on my work XP box. I even booted the vm from a floppy and used a W98 CD to install it. Took 21 hours! It would have been much quicker if I had copied the ISO to disk but hey ho!

I use Wink which lets capture on mouse click or continuously or key stroke. You can also annotate the captured frames with arrows, boxes etc and write in them. The boss likes Windows built in problem steps recorder but I find the resulting output too small.
