I see what you mean. A sensible person would back off the power when the speakers started to show signs of distress. There's just one problem with that. We don't tend to work with sensible people So, what we need are amps that have a lot of built in protection. I didn't know about the clipping effect. Thanks for that.

As I read it, the article says it's not a problem to underpower a speaker but it is a problem to overpower it. Which is how I've always understood it. Anyway, the long and the short is have a decent matched system. I suppose it would be ok to have a bigger amp if the speaker cables are fairly long. There's quite a lot of loss on a cable and a higher powered amp would compensate for the loss. Trouble is, someone will then use it with short cables and overdrive the speakers.

I'm not sure I would agree with getting an amp that's rated higher than the speakers. The tendency is to turn the volume up to 11.

We've got one of these Kustom KPRO100 PA System 100w that we used to use in the hall until the PTA funded a bespoke system. We use the Kustom one for Sports Day etc., but with hindsight I'd get the 200W version. The speakers are wedge shaped and by connecting the "line in" to the "line out" of the hall system, they make great stage monitors, laid on their side.

What will it mainly be used for. How many microphones will you use. How big is the environment it will be used in? Remember, if you are planning to use the existing speakers with a new amp, you need to make sure they are the right impedance and will handle the power of the amp. Speakers usually have the ratings on a plate at the back. What's your budget?

I've just be trying clean up an aging tower system and suggested getting a new laptop might be the best bet. I've always recommended friends go to Staples in the past. They tend to be quite knowledgeable and offer some good deals. The HP G6-1303sa suits their budget and the spec looks fine. They offer a £14 upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. I've heard a few negatives about Windows 8 but for a "silver surfer" who just uses it for emails, surfing and wordprocessing, is Windows 8 the right way to go, or should they just stick to Windows 7? In these circumstances, would you recommend purchasing AV or just using Microsoft Security Essential. Both my son's and wife's laptops use Microsoft but I'm a little more wary about what I recommend to friends and neighbours, so I welcome any advice.

Our Bursar looks after our website, which is hosted by the LA and based on Sharepoint. She is off for a couple of weeks and I was asked to keep the current information up to date, which involved simply uploading pdf files to the Newletters page. However, some of the pdf files are supposed to display as tables and I wasn't shown how to do this. Is there a way to import a pdf table or will I have to create it from scratch in Sharepoint?

This follows on from a previous thread. The drive is faulty in a Toshiba laptop and is bing replaced under warranty. The drive is dead, nothing recognises. They want the faulty one returned but I've no idea what's on it and I can't clean it. Would I be within my rights to refuse to return it unless I've flattened it with a sledge hammer first?

Normally I would agree. However, the Toshiba extended warranty for laptops was around £30 last time.

We have a Samsung 32" TV in the reception area that plays video via a usb port. Until recently, I have used Camtasia to convert Powerpoint presentations to an AVI file and then Adobe Premiere Elements 8 to get it to a compatible mpeg format. Once I'd got the format and scale right, it produced a pretty good video but not one I was 100% happy with. Some of the transitions flashed a bit and the resolution was only ok. I have just used the 2010 video creation. I still had to use Premiere to convert the wmv file to mpeg but the results are stunning and it's a lot easier to produce. There are other utilities out there that can convert wmv to mpeg but I've got Premiere and I'm used to it. So, for around £300, we have a signage system that does the job more than adequately. The plans are now to extend it into other areas of the school.

I'd have to recover it from the dustbin first but thanks for the advice
