I bet there are schools near you that already use them. There's no licence and the radios range from cheap to reasonable, depending on the manufacturer. You will pay more for Kenwood, Motorola or ICOM and the radios are better made but there will be little to no difference in range regardless of price. If you don't quite get the range you need (some areas are scratchy), then it might be worth trying radios with a higher output power but if you have areas that are totally dead, then chances are you will need a base station and a decent aerial to get the range. As an alternative, you could look at a paging system. Scope DataPage Lite UHF desktop paging transmitter and use simple numeric codes to alert staff.

Not in my case. It's only used to connect the tv to the router for iPlayer, so no hardship to flick a couple of switches.

It connects my router to the TV and I only use it for iPlayer, so it's difficult to know how it compares with cable. I'm pleased with it, running a cable would have been impractical. It says Made in China RHS on the label. It does seem to run warm and may have been the cause of the cap. going. I'm now only turning them on when needed.
