Is your existing NAS used for anything apart from backup? Could you just stick that in the head teacher's house, at least as an interim?

Bought a Tissot quartz for someone as a gift. It stopped a month before the 2 year guarantee expired. That was when I found out that battery replacement on a £350 watch would be £120! To add insult to injury, Tissot don't have anywhere in the UK to service the watches any more, so it goes to Switzerland with a turn around time of 4 to 6 weeks! As it was under guarantee, I didn't have to pay for the battery this time, but I did have to buy an extra watch to be used while it was away. They tell me that the battery is expected to last about 2 years. That gives it a downtime ratio of about 6%! I won't be buying another one - it does look nice, but it is less functional than my cheapo Accurist. I do like a proper watch - my grandfather was a watchmaker. Unfortunately he went out of business because cheap quartz watches are so good.

Definitely a good idea to get an off-site backup. You say you're thinking of putting a server off-site; Where? Whose responsibility (licensing, updating, power)? What security? Another school is a good option - your house isn't!

I didn't install it on clients when I reimaged last year and no one has complained about anything not working. However it is on our server to run the Unifi controller. Does anyone know whether any of the alternatives work? If not I think my best option might be to move to the cloud controller.

Filestream is officially supported on Server 2012 onwards. Whichever way around you do it there will be a big hit on your internet connection the first time you do it, but incremental changes shouldn't be too bad. However, as others have said, Vault is your friend here. Going forward, try and get people into the habit of using Team Drives for anything that should be shared. Make it part of your AUP and induction.

Sounds like it'll work well for your needs. You might want to think about what your fallback is in case someone else needs access to the account.

100% never deleting or excluding the de-dup folders from back up! It's definitely where all the data I need is; the actual directories are thousands of times smaller, so it's not compressed data, it's only placeholders pointing to the Sys Vol folder. The reason for my query is whether it's expected that it's bigger than the reported size of the original directories or whether something's gone wrong. It doesn't seem logical to me, unless it's versioning, but that could be my faulty logic or that a developer had a moment of madness or there could be a very good reason that I don't know about. I'll definitely have a look at garbage collection.

Different software publishers will have different roles, but... If you buy M$ Office on the normal school agreement (based on staff FTE) you can only install it on shared pupil computers. However, if you have an O365 subscription (including the free tier) pupils can download the full version on up to 5 personal devices. If day as there going to keep the devices, there's a strong argument that there personal devices, not school owned. You need to be aware that they'll need to sign in to a school O365 account regularly to enable it to keep working. Therefore it's likely to stop working when they leave school. If you determine they're school owned but for individual use, you should be able to buy a machine licence from your normal reseller at a discount from retail price. IIRC from July this year you won't be able to buy a perpetual license for M$ Office anyway, so whatever you do it won't be possible to give them a license that lasts beyond their time at school. Verified when they register. If it's wrong, they don't receive the email telling them their child has a place at the school. They're supposed to confirm they accept the place by logging on using the email and/or contacting the school. If a place is offered, but not accepted, we contact the parent and at the same time verify the email address. They're sent the request to fill in the data collection form by email with the invitation to attend a welcome evening. If they haven't completed it by the welcome evening we get them to complete the form on the spot or contact them to check. We have a parents evening twice a year and invitations are sent by email. Anyone who doesn't book has their email checked. We have quite a high degree of confidence that the email address we hold is correct.

What he said ^^ Pretty much all of the apps will require you to have accurate contact details - we use Schoolcomms which verifies against pupil name, email and mobile number before a contact can link a child to the app to receive messages. Anything that is used to send information specific to a pupil or group of pupils *must* have verification that the contact details are correct. If it's just generic school stuff, just use social media - most of the parents already have it, but you'd still need to persuade them to follow you. We verified ours by introducing it alongside something parents had an incentive to respond to - in our case parents evening. Sent an email to all registered email addresses saying this is the registered address for your child and on same day sent a paper note with every child informing them that we'd sent an email and if they hadn't received one they wouldn't get a parents evening appointment. Proforma attached to the note for them to return with correct address. That was years ago and it was a massive task. Nowadays all applications are on line through the LA and we get a copy of the address used to register. We then send an electronic data collection form to that address asking for additional addresses or changes. We've been at over 99% correct for years now (judging by parents evening bookings and responses to school trip registrations).

GSuite works brilliantly for small organisations - IMHO much more straightforward to set up and for ongoing administration than O365. The only thing you'll need to sort out is costs. Please can you update here once you've found out what happens with other (existing) users after an in place upgrade? I had hoped that after a clean install of 1803 I would be able to run an in place upgrade without the crud coming back, but reports on here seen to suggest that's hit and miss at best. Trying to hold off upgrading until 19H2(? Octoberish release) so that I can swap on to the longer term support cycle, but would rather not have to reimage all machines during term time.

I think I've cracked it I'm suggesting that teachers create a Sway. We're on O365 with SSO. Workflow is: 1) Teacher goes to sway.office.com 2) Create new Sway 3) Add image card (from local machine or Sharepoint or Internet) 4) Click Share and make available to "Anyone with link" 5) Use Chrome extension to convert url to QR code

Using Meraki MDM to deploy - enrolled in VPP and using Apple School Manager for purchasing and managing apps iPads - As long as we don't start uploading QHD images, the site wide wifi will cope.

Yer. That's not the issue - we want a teacher to be able to take a photo and convert it to a QR code. The kids then find the QR code, scan it and it shows the photo. As an aside, the camera app on the iPad now has a built in QR code reader. It just recognises QR codes anywhere in the view and asks you if you want to open the url. No need even to line it up, let alone install a separate reader app.

If I was doing it, I'd just upload the photo to Google drive and convert the share URL to a QR code. I've suggested this and have been told it's too complicated. I'd quite like to find something that makes it easy as I foresee that otherwise it'll be me creating the QR codes....
