If your users are entering their credentials in the guest portal to authenticate, then this is a bad idea - no https means their credentials will be being transmitted in clear text.

Yes, if you request them. Exam boards say they make them available 90 minutes prior to the exam, however in practice they're often not available until closer to 60 or 45 mins prior. Our exams office request PDFs and then use these for students who require them printed on a particular colour paper etc. This year we will be using Read&Write to read them aloud (through headphones) for those students who in the past had human readers. Worst case scenario if the exam boards don't provide the PDF in enough time, the exams staff can scan an original exam paper from the sealed bag and Read&Write has built in OCR functionality and can then read that. But obviously it is better to have an original. I just wish the exam boards would allow us to have the PDFs sooner. Schools with a high proportion of SEN students with access arrangements must really struggle!

@ass17 Awesome, thank you very much! For us, the scaling wouldn't be an issue as our IT suite computers have 23" screens and run in 1920x1080, and we run EWP with the StartPageWidth setting at 1. But I can see what you mean. If working with the snap to left/right isn't possible, even the ability to manually resize the EWP window would help. Thanks!

@ass17 Hi Andy, No, sorry. We only have one monitor on the exams computers. I want to be able to move EWP so that it occupies only either the left half of the screen, or the right half of the screen. In Win7 and Win10 you can do this with other apps by dragging the app to the far left or right edge of the screen. But we can't do this with EWP because it doesn't have a header bar at the top, so it's either full screen or minimised by using the button you added on the toolbar. @ass17 Hi - I was wondering if I could make a feature request please? We have recently purchased TextHelp Read&Write computer reader software, that students will be using in mock exams next week instead of a human reader. It seems to work alongside Exam WritePad quite well, however one issue is that the students, in their normal way of working, usually split their screen so that their source document is on the left hand side of the screen, and their written work is on the right hand side of the screen. So in an exam, they'd want the exam paper on the left, and Exam WritePad on the right - that way they can use Read&Write to read aloud their exam paper and their written answers. This isn't currently possible, because you can't resize the WritePad window; it's either full screen on minimized. Do you think this would be possible? We'd find it very useful here. We will have to use MS Word for our mocks next week instead of WritePad but I'd love it if we can use WritePad again in the summer series, with the split screen functionality. Thanks for all your efforts with WritePad; we love it here and have been using it for a couple of years now. I'm dreading moving back to Word next week!

You can use Nero to make a bootable ISO, and then you can use Rufus' ISO to USB tool to make a bootable USB from this ISO image.

I wouldn't email reports to parents given the amount of sensitive information on them - email isn't a secure platform unless you employ end to end encryption. There are various parent portals available where you can publish electronic documents for parents to retrieve themselves securely, e.g. SIMS own parent app, Schoolcomms etc

Crikey, haven't seen an RJ45 port splitter in use for years! My advice would be to sack off the cable tidies currently in place and use 1U brush bars instead. Much nearer as all of the excess cable can be hidden.

Staff - 802.1x secured SSID presented by Ruckus and authenticated against SmoothWall RADIUS Students - Ruckus captive portal for authentication against AD, with RADIUS accounting packets passed to our SmoothWall for seamless filtering Visitors - receptionist creates a guest pass via the Ruckus web portal - she can set the amount of devices, length of time - this is printed including instructions for connecting. Visitors connect to our visitors SSID and are then prompted for their guest pass

Hi All, The more I think about it, the more I think it makes sense to deploy O365 ProPlus rather than Office 2019. However there's so much conflicting information about how to license and activate it. I'd like to activate by computer rather than user. So for those of you who have done this; what is the best way to achieve this, and what steps are required? Thanks!

Just to add my experiences. If you plan to deploy through SCCM bear in mind you don't need a path in the configuration.xml, as when you create a packaged application in SCCM it takes all the source files in the folder into the package. So my configuration.xml looks like this and worked fine...

Yes, exactly my point - my preference at this stage would be to default all windows to open on the primary display, however this perhaps won't be possible. We have an issue moving forward with extended desktop if we can't make this happen. The problem with duplicate is that our projectors are 1280x1024 / 1024 x 768 and our monitors are all 1920x1080. So you end up with either a crappy looking projector display or a crappy looking desktop display! I think everything being displayed is an issue, from a trust point of view. You're trusting that the teacher won't make a mistake, and we all know they do. It doesn't matter how many times we tell teachers not to complete their register whilst they are duplicating their screen to the class, but they still do it. Projector freeze isn't always reliable - once the computer auto locks and the screen sleeps (after 15 min here) then the projector detects the source has been disconnected and turns freeze off. Teacher then unlocks computer and displays whatever they had open on their screen to the entire class. Personally I feel the teacher being in control of what is displayed on the projector screen is a more sensible approach. Extended desktop makes this possible and also means they can multitask for example if the class are watching a video.

Hi All, As part of our Windows 10 roll-out, I'm attempting to enforce extended desktop on classroom computers connected to a projector. Two reasons; 1) from a GDPR perspective so staff have to move any windows they want projecting over to the projector screen 2) to avoid resolution mismatch between computer and projector However the way Windows 10 handles extended desktop is not helping my case. By default, it remembers which screen you use each application on. This sounds useful but if a member of staff projects a Word document to the class, and closes the document down whilst it's still on the projector screen, then the next time they open any Word document it opens up on the projector screen. If this happened to be something confidential, we'd have a problem. Is there any way to force all applications to open on your primary display, regardless of which screen it was last used on? I've looked around windows settings and done a bit of online research but can't find anything anywhere. This is the last hurdle to banishing duplicated displays and I feel like we're going to fall at it :-( Thanks!

If you're not already, then by far the best way to do this is to build driver packages and then apply them in the task sequence only if the WMI query returns the correct make and model. This works 100% reliably for us and is dead easy to set up. Let me know if you need any help with it. In answer to the OP we are still largely Win7 here but are just rolling Win10 (1803) out. So far so good, haven't come across anything that hasn't been resolvable yet. Using local profiles for staff and have set pupils as guests so their profiles clear at logoff. Both with redirected desktop/start menu and a start menu layout xml.

Filter the security log on your domain controllers for event ID 4740. This will give a calling computer name which is the source of your lockout. The most common cause for us is that the user has changed their password but not updated it on their BYOD device Wi-Fi connections (we use 802.1x authentication for staff Wi-Fi)

Did you get any further with this @Manny-Tech? I'm having exactly the same issues. Unreliable mapping but always works perfect after a log out and back in or a gpupdate. I've looked at the script presented by Skell and will check it out properly when I'm back in on Tuesday but just wondered if you have had any success?

For anyone else experiencing this issue - the users that were failing to connect have a trailing space at the end of their LegacyExchangeDN attribute in AD. Removing this enables their mailbox to be opened in Outlook 2016 successfully. However, doing so means that old emails from these users cannot be replied to, and anyone picking their name from the Outlook cache will receive an NDR, as the LegacyExchangeDN is the value used for routing internal mail. From my research it looks like you can fix this by creating an X500 proxy address with the old LegacyExchangeDN value, but I've yet to test this. Also need to look at our automated user creation process (salamander) to see if spaces can be stripped out at account creation stage. It seems that the LegacyExchangeDN field can only hold a certain amount of characters, and defaults to using the display name at the end of the string. If this value ends on a space when truncated, the issue in my OP presents itself. We have (School Name - Pupil/Staff) at the end of all our display names so the chances of truncating on a space are reasonably high, running a PowerShell query shows around 80 out of our 900 of our users are affected. Thankfully only two members of staff! Hope this helps someone....
