Do you allow Facebook for teachers?
dany2010 replied to dany2010's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Yep, all pretty much what I'm thinking. You wouldn't believe it comes from the SLT, they over ruled my manager and said to enable but they will disapline anyone for being on it too long. My thinking is, it's either on there or it's not. How long is too long and who's going to have to go through the logs. At the minute admon already have it but for work related only. If only there is a network security concern... -
Hi, We have been asked to allow Facebook for staff so they can use it in their free time. I'm not sure at the minute if I agree with this or not. What do you think? Probably can't stop it but just want to see what everyone's thoughts are.

Hi, I have just been given a load of programs to deploy and the job of turning on all machines in the school early in the morning so it instals before everyone is in. Theres about 60 in total over five different policies. Is there a way to bulk import these into the gpo? Many thanks

Hi, Having a bit of a nightmare here trying to create a moodle 2 theme. Our current moodle 1.9 was created by a company but its really simple to understand. trying to re-create this in moodle 2 is just not mooving at all. Has anyone else here been through this? What guides/books/videos did you use? This is a tad of code from our 1.9 theme, how easy is this compared to moodle 2. I cant see why they changed it for, it doesnt look any different. * {font-family: tahoma;} body { background-color: #fff; margin: 0; } a:link, a:visited { color: #666; } #header-home { height: 100%; margin: 2px auto 0; width: 1024px; } #site-title { background: url("http://www.edugeek.net/images/site_title.png") no-repeat; height: 159px; position: absolute; top: 50px; width: 751px; } #header-wrap { height: 262px; background: url("http://www.edugeek.net/images/header_tile.png") repeat-x #56A5C4; } #page { width: 1100px; margin: 0 auto; background: url("http://www.edugeek.net/images/content_slice.png") repeat-y -5px 0; } #content { margin: 30px 0 0 46px; width: 1012px; } #right-column { width: 219px !important; } #left-column { width: 216px !important;

Thanks mrverrall. They have really complicated this when you look at the difference between 1.9 and 2. The theme we have is so simple and i understand quite alot of it. Moodle 2 themes just loose me in seconds. Will give a php cache a go if i can ever get a good theme up. That and running on a proper server might be the answer. Really want to avoid using another hosted version. The support weve had from what is supposed to be one of the best companies is just terrible.

Hi, I have just installed moodle however it is really slow, even loading the homepage which is blank takes five second. The server is a new install and is running i3 processor, 4gb ram. No other server apps running. Heres the process i went through to install it: Install iis, mysql, php Set Fast cgi up in iis 7.5 uncomment out all of the required extensions in php.ini and keys such as cgi.force = 0 increase fastcgi timeout to 900 create database and give a user access to it, ran the http://localhost/install.php] installer Installed the config.php file. Followed the instructions. Is there somethign that still needs to be set? Have had a look online and cant seem to find any solutions. Ram is running at 816mb and processor at 0-1% normally.

OpenDNS, Is it now free again?
dany2010 replied to dany2010's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
you would think but we get 20k in total, only one site is big though. This year we had less We got a smoothwall quote for 10k which there is just no way we could pay that one. Were trying to replace these horrible esys machines that restart whenever you log off and are slow as you like but what with license costs and etc were doing like 20 a year. Have tried squid with dansguardian but gave up with it, I give up with Linux. -
Hi, Im looking at using a service such as OpenDNS to block websites. We are based over five different sites so having our own proxy server would mean 5 more computers/server running, one for each site. When i looked a few months ago there was a fee but i cant seem to find this now. Is it now free again? What version is best to use in schools, home dns or business? Many thanks Update, just found the pricing but the premium version says its free?, Confused

Hi, Got a bit of a problem at home im hoping someone can help me with. Our lodger is doing my head in, he will go on my other computer and stream and download causing me to get really laggy internet on my computer. I dont really want to deny him access to the internet but just want to limit the computer to 120kbps or something, he would never be able to stream but will be ok for forums and browsing if just a bit slow. Any ideas? Have found netlimiter but hoping theres a free solution. Our router doesnt support it. Many thanks

Hi, Bit of a weird issue a couple of people are having here. The printers are deployed with GPP which works for 98% of users, however some people cannot print to the printer automatically added. The automatically added printer shows as printer on server (e.g ICT on server1) This fails to connect to the printer. The user then has to search and add the printer manually to get it to work, the added printers hows as printer on server.domain.local (ICT on server1.domain.local) This then means that they have two printer which are the same but only one works? printer on server (ICT on server1) works for everyone else. Any ideas what causes this? Edit: Have read that you can set GPP to deply \\server.domain.local\printer rather than the \\server\printer that you get if you use the browse button. Will give it a go.

Hi, I like seeing what's happening when computers are starting up and it's also good so people can see why the computer is taking longer than normal to start (software installs). The problem is that when users log in it shows the policies that are applying. When I was at Uni we just unplugged after a certain policy to disable some features needed for a program that the admins wouldn't enable. I would like to disable verbose once the machine has finished loading. Is this possible? Thanks

Parents get charged with price of a replacment machine, as these machines are now 6 years they are welcome to break an dbuy us some new one . No chance in getting things changed with this guy. Cant seem to get the shutdown to work. Have added into the gpo user rights ability to remote shutdown and shutdown using the shutdown command but i still get the help file and reasons why this computer has been shutdown.

[mdt] Linked deployment share? Does it rely on the original server?
dany2010 replied to dany2010's topic in O/S Deployment
Thanks, Have setup linked deployment share. All working ok. -
Spotted that thanks but it doesn't give the user a chance to save their work.
-
Thanks sukh, Got that bit sorted now, just trying to shutdown the machines now with a timer and the shutdown command. The above doesn't log existing users out. Would like to block the entire machine.
-
Because they don't see anything wrong with leaving the doors open even when they loop network cables etc. thats the deputy head as well. Trust me, last time stuff happened I talked to him and basically got told that they will do what they like. Just tried Shutdown /f /m \\ computer But just get a list of commands plus loads of other stuff underneath.
-
Many thanks, That solves prevent new logins. Is it possible to create a log off script with a timer?

Hi, Is there a built in way to disable computers automatically, pupils are being left unattended during their lunch breaks so we have had approval to lock workstations during lunch. We have tried disabling the computer account from the server but this does not log out the user. Any ideas? Thanks
-
Hi, I have now setup a fairly decent image on one of our servers in MDT and would now like to copy to our other servers at other sites. If i were to do this and then remove the original server that i shared the share from would the linked deployment share still work between the other servers? Many thanks, Dan

Thanks SHimmer45, Tried two matching pairs and still no luck. Looking at it when it starts up it does say something about ecc memory so it might be that the memory i have is non ecc. The working memory is. Just had a very quick look and it looks like £40 ish for 2gb of ecc stuff, bit cheaper of ebay. For the age of the server i might try and push for a new one. Shame because i wont be able to get another rack mounted one as they cost too much.

Hi, We have a HP DL365 G1 thats running on 3GB of ram. Its now running with only 500mb available so would like to replace the current memory with four 1gb. In our other older servers(not HP) we just put in pc2 5300U memory sticks but after just trying i found this server doesnt like it. Is this a HP thing? Many thanks
