As we're somewhat desperate for space I'd rather use the spare if we can, so if RAID can soak up at least one failed drive then I'm happy to take the risk.

Hi folks, We have a dynamic VHD that's currently around 1TB. I want to convert that to a static VHD of around 1.2TB. Anyone know very approximately how long that will take? e.g. hours or days TIA

Hi folks, Our SAN (HP MSA2312) has or rather had a spare HDD. (As background the SAN is configured with two VDISKS. One holds Hyper-V OS VHDs (RAID5) and the other carries Data VHDs (RAID6).) The SAN is supported by a thirdline consultant (it's all far too clever for me!), and we were told that the spare disk wasn't actually necessary when we switched to another consultant. We ran out of space on the SAN so the spare HDD has been incorporated into the VDISK. The latest consultant said this isn't an issue as the Vdisks will not stop working if a drive fails because of RAID. I just wanted to check if the above statement is correct? TIA

We have taken some to the local WRC, so I'm not sure if the license was required for that? The problem we have is that some of our equipment is broken, inevitably, and the usual recycling people aren't interested in that.

Hi folks, Somewhat related to my other post, but we want to sell some items via eBay. I've seen other posts mention that reselling items will incur VAT issues. Is this the case, is it solvable, and are there any other issues with selling via eBay? (We're a state school, not an academy) TIA

Hi folks, When I first started here, a couple of years ago, we were looking to dispose of some electrical items and a colleague of mine went through all the issues relating to it and got a WEEE license from the Environment Agency (no great expense as £18 a year). Apparently we have to have this license before we can throw any electrical items away, and then we have to be sure it's going to be recycled rather than going to landfill. Is the above definitely the case? I'm struggling to find any previous posts about this specific issue, or anything specific via Google. TIA

Thanks vikpaw. I didn't know what I was doing they did provide some instructions when asked though, and it seems to have worked.

I would think either one day a week or split across two days. Beyond that and I think it would be a case of diminishing returns. You might find it a struggle to recruit someone suitable for those hours though. Look at the tasks you're doing/need help with and factor in with their job description. I would imagine that things they can do will drop out of that. Do you have a helpdesk? You could use that to assign suitable things when the person is in.

Hi folks, Anyone else have a problem with the bigger hi-res screens vs. average users? I find that whenever I spec one of these screens it often ends up with a mixed reception, as some will struggle with the size of text. Windows 7 has the facility to magnify the output (by 125% and 150%) but ironically SIMS doesn't support it and suffers from UI corruption. Running in lower resolutions inevitably involves blurred output. I have suggested that the users ensure they have an up-to-date eye test and wear glasses if required, but that doesn't get a great response. Sorry, not a very coherent post, but is the only answer to buy big low-rest screens... and do such things exist? TIA

Sorry to dig up an old thread but does anyone know how to run the 14265 patch? We've been sent it, but with no instructions. Buried within is a .SQL file, and opening this opens SQL Management Studio, but executing this brings up an errors about files not being found.

We're running on Hyper-V, but less than brilliant. Seems to be a very busy server, and even with quad core it just doesn't seem to have enough oomph.

sonofsanta: yes, blank browser for about 20-30 seconds, then the page will load. It doesn't load instantly as such, but it isn't slow to then load. This was using both IE and Chrome. I wasn't getting any obvious slow down with file transfers, but then it's hard to say whether that's a problem or not. PING certainly wasn't showing any packet loss. I'll try the reset arp next time. cpjitservices: it sounds like it predates me, and I've been here almost 2 years. The number of devices on the switch hasn't changed. I'm wary of touching the switch, but will see if I can figure out the firmware update.

Hi folks, Firstly, excuse my naivety when it comes to switches. I know very little about them. We've had an ongoing problem in one particular IT classroom where the network is anecdotally often very slow, and gets worse and worse over a period of time (typically months). Today was the first chance I've had to look at the problem properly, and been able to reproduce it e.g. websites taking 20-30 seconds to open, whereas elsewhere in the school they were opening normally. I checked PCM and there was no load on the classroom’s switch, nor the web filter/Internet. I pinged the web filter, and it showed a solid <1ms response with no packet loss. I rebooted the switch, and everything went back to normal i.e. was quick. The switch itself is a 3Com 5500-48 (model no. JE103A, ROM = 2.02, SW Version = 3.02.03s56), which anecdotally is around 6-7 years old. I was curious as to whether this highlights a problem with the switch and it should just be replaced, or whether it’s expected to need to reboot these every few months? TIA

I've not configured switches before. One day I guess I'll have to! I did see something on an HP forum that some switches don't have hostname value, which was related to this PCM naming problem.
