Hi folks, I've inherited a domain that uses the CON2PRT routine with a long script and an environment variable to define which PCs connect to what printer (we have a lot of classrooms and printers). Example below: \\dc\NETLOGON\CON2PRT /F (disconnects all printers) IF %Location% == ROOM1 \\dc\NETLOGON\CON2PRT /CD \\prtsrv\room1printer It's an elegant system and until a few weeks ago this was working without issue, but now we're getting up to a third of students with no printers mapping at all. Typically if they switch PCs it works, and they can return to the same PC after switching and then it works. Anyone use this routine and have any idea what could be causing this? The only change to the PCs that I can think of would be Windows Updates. The only workaround I can think of is hard mapping each PC to the printers in the room, and disabling the script. TIA

I might be wrong, but they still seem to be able to. We have redirection in place, but perhaps not for the desktop, and when they're away from the network and login it then saves to their local desktop/documents folder.

Hi folks, As part of a DPA review we're looking at disabling local hard disk saving on our fleet of laptops and desktops (these are on a 2008 R2 domain). There's an option in GP to disable access to the C drive, but this doesn't stop applications from saving to places like the desktop. Is there a way with GP to disable all local saving, or some other way of achieving this if GP can't? TIA

The laptop's on a domain. We do have a firewall, and it seems to be just the user account that's affected. I've narrowed down the problem though, and it's Flash. This only happens on IE, so I ran IE with add-ons disabled, and all was fine. As I turned individual add-ons back on it was self evident that Flash was the issue. Chrome is fine. There's now a second laptop with exactly the same issue, only affecting a domain user account (local admin works without issue). My concern is that there's some serious issue with Flash as I can't reinstall it (uninstalling doesn't seem to help). Chrome is fine as a workaround, but this could be more of a problem if it spreads. Is anyone aware of an issue with Flash?

Hi folks, I've got a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 laptop with Windows 7. As local administrator, and using IE, I can access web sites without any issue. As the user it takes several minutes to open most sites e.g. bbc.co.uk. I rebuilt the laptop, as there was no obvious cause, and it still does the same thing. We've got several of this model, but only this one is affected. Any ideas on what could be causing this? TIA

Hi folks, I'm looking at getting ITIL Foundation certification. A friend did this via self study. Is this easy enough, or is it better to do the training course? Either way, can anyone recommend a training company in the Hampshire/Surrey/Berkshire area? TIA

plexer: this was specifically with respect to usage by teachers and students, rather than the actual install. I can sympathise with the arguments from both sides, but the difficulty is finding the happy medium. The Site Team have bowed out though, and are now saying they won't move it in case they damage it. The teachers have agreed to move it 15cm, so now we're trying to find a 3rd party that can move it..

Thanks for the reply. Ah yes, I have the Schools report (very useful!). I was thinking that real world examples would (a) be more interesting than the rather dry repetition of the principles and (b) hopefully drive home in some staff at least that these things really happen ("would you like your school to have this headline, which people will forever find with Google?"). This was in addition to some general do's and don'ts, which is the other part I'm struggling. Perhaps sifting through the real world examples will liberate some more general advice for each principle. Googling "ico breach school" brings up a fair few to start with.

Hi All, I'm putting together some training on the Data Protection Act. I would like to provide some practical examples of Do's and Don'ts alongside the no-doubt-yawn-inducing 8 principles. Some principles are much easier than others and/or my creativity is drying up, because I'm stuck for providing examples for 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Can anyone think of something(s)? Also, does anyone know of any ICO breaches in relation to schools which were specifically in relation to a principle? Again, I was thinking this would focus people's minds if they could see where other schools had failed. Any assistance much appreciated. TIA

Just to add a bit more background, this is a Science room. The kids all sit on the high type of stool, so the kids at the front block the kids at the back from seeing a large section of the board. IME the average height teacher can only just reach a board installed at 1m height, and that's when they're stretching to reach. County Council guidelines. The teacher has done some "user testing", and from that has deduced 1.2m from ground is the best balance for students being able to see and use. I'm sure that some students will not be able to reach :-/ No comment :-) An SB680. I've heard BECTA quoted before re. projectors also, in the context of brightness (therefore distance from the screen, but that will depend on the lumens anyway). But on the same note, if the students can't see the bottom of the IWB from the back of the classroom this could also be reason to raise it. Yep, the latter. This is specifically about having to use a step ladder or stool to reach something when it's not necessary. As per above it's re. the students being able to see what's projected, and trading off with using it. Yep exactly that.

Hi folks, I've got war breaking out between our Site Team and a teacher because the latter wants an interactive whiteboard moved higher but the former says it's against "working at height" rules. Annoyingly the board in question is at 0.9m from floor level, whereas most of the others are at 1m. Although in this case the teacher wants it moved up 30cm. Is anyone aware of any guidelines or even legislation about heights that interactive whiteboards should be installed at? TIA

Hi folks, Anyone else having issue with HP Power Manager 4.3.2 and IE? I can't get the login page to open, even trying compatibility mode down to IE7. Chrome doesn't render the page properly, but so far Firefox is working 100%. 4.3.2 seems to be the latest software, but there's something else called HP Power Protector. Is that an alternative to HPPM? TIA

Hi folks, We seem to have a problem with Java, but unfortunately it's proving difficult to resolve. One of the ICT lessons requires that the students go to the Little Man Computer site, which has a java applet: LMC Simulator This worked in the previous academic year, but for some unclear reason it's now crashing IE. Oddly it's not crashing for all students, and doesn't appear to be an issue when the local administrator. Things I've tried without success: 1. Updating Java to the latest version. 2. Removing Ranger. I deleted the profile for a student where it was working, and subsequent to the profile delete it's now crashing for them as well. Any ideas as this is rather desperate for an ICT lesson next week? Plan B is to install Chrome on the required PCs. TIA

Hi folks, I have a VM that I have stored in the library. If I deploy this does it take a copy and keep the VM in the library, or move it out? If it moves it out, how can I take a copy instead, or is it simply a case of copying the folder in Explorer? TIA

Yes. Dedicated. 1Gb/s. Complete VM backups start at 6pm everyday. There are 12 of those, and it's typically 2 or 3 of these that fail. File shares are done twice a day at 2:30pm and 10:30pm. These have yet to fail, as far as I can recall. VM and DC system state recovery points are taken at 5am, and there's a full backup everyday at 8pm. I don't remember these failing either. Often it fails again, but if I persist it will eventually work. I think that's the case currently. This was one of the things I checked, and tried to get the various backups not to coincide with each other. Would DPM have done that already? The only other oddity is that if I check the Management section it shows some (but not all) protected servers. One of the servers it says is unprotected, but has the protection agent. Except this server is in the protection group. Coincidentally or not, this is the one that typically fails frequently, but will eventually backup if I persist with manual retries.

Hi folks, We have a Draytek Vigor 2820, which we use for remote access. This has been working without issue for about a year, when using a Win 7 client to access. The Vigor itself has been configured with a remote VPN account. Within the last few weeks this has stopped working with the following error: 0x800B0109: A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider. Event Viewer essentially shows the same thing, with a source of "RasSstp". Googling points me to this MSKB article, but it doesn't give any detail on how to spot a problem certificate (I can't see any certificate issued by Draytek): How to troubleshoot Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP)-based connection failures in Windows Server 2008 Anyone got any ideas on how to troubleshoot this? It's almost as if a certificate was issued by the Vigor, and has now expired. TIA

Dredging up the past here, but with Becta gone, is a SIRO still required?

We already backup SIMS with DPM, but this is a further offsite backup which we'd like to do via CrashPlan. We're likely to just use the file/folder backup of CrashPlan, but of course I'd need to backup SIMS in such a way that we could be sure of restoring the content. I thought it best to also check this with our CC IT team, as they installed the server. I'll feed back their advice here.
