Thanks for the reply. Yes, we're 2008, and use file screens. But we can't block SWF and EXE because they're used in web design and programming (annoyingly!). Similarly with MP3s and video files, which are also used in ICT and other subjects. At the moment I'm limited to stumbling across a game, searching for the filename across all home folders (which Server 2008 is slow at, so I often use UltraSearch), and then deleting.

Hi folks, This forum technically seems to be about offering solutions, but as everyone else is asking questions (and this is general)... Inevitably we get the students putting lots of games in their home folders. We have a server with several million files on, so trying to keep a lid on it is near impossible (filenames... filetypes... etc.). Has anyone found a good approach of any kind to stopping this? That is, preventing them from being copied in the first place, or finding them easily and removing them. TIA

But why not replace it with something else? (that worked ) I know, I know...

The script doesn't seem to be all that usable sadly. It seems to take a long time to process. How annoying that MS removed it! *shakes fist*

Hi folks, I've spotted that NET SEND no longer works with a Win 2008 R2 domain (with Win 7 clients). Reading around the topic MSG is purportedly meant to replace it, but I've had no luck sending a message to a domain (the message only appears on the server). When I send (with /V switched on) I get the following: C:\Users\administrator.ADMIN>msg * /v Test. Please Ignore Sending message to session Console, display time 60 Async message sent to session Console Sending message to session RDP-Tcp#0, display time 60 Async message sent to session RDP-Tcp#0 C:\Users\administrator.ADMIN> Anyone know how to send a message on a Win 2008 R2 domain to all Win 7 clients? The consultant went for a manual deployment of the agent. Different errors on the backup last night, so they're carrying on with those.

Hi folks, We recently had our DPM server upgraded from 2010 to 2012 (by an external consultant). Initially all was fine. Then over the weekend there were multiple errors with the backup which were essentially all of the same type: The protection agent on server is not compatible with the DPM version. The protection agent version is 3.0.7696.0, and the DPM version is 4.0.1908.0. (ID 904 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990911) Oddly when I look in the Management panel it shows all the affected servers as having the current DPM agent. I'm wary of manually deploying the agent on the affected servers in case this is going to cause more problems. I am waiting to hear back from the consultant that did the upgrade, but thought I'd just check here to see if anyone has come across this before. Google isn't turning up much, if anything. TIA

Thanks! Yes, I tried upgrading the eLicenser but no dice. Still waiting to hear from Steinberg support :-/

The eLicenser is software based. We upgraded from Cubase 4 which used USB dongles. I suspect because we imaged our setup, and then put it onto 20 identical machines, the eLicenser didn't spot any change. Only our Teacher PC is different, which is probably why the eLicenser broke. I'm guessing with a packaged deployment that you will need to manually activate, as per Steinberg's information. Annoying that they don't provide a network license system! Sibelius do.

All of ours came with individual serial numbers, annoyingly. We imaged our setup PC, with Cubase 6 installed, and curiously it didn't complain when this image was pushed onto the 20 or so PCs. So oddly all 20 PCs are using the same serial number. The only exception was the Teacher PC, where the eLicenser broke. We're still trying to get that resolved with Steinberg's (dreadful) support.

On reflection I wonder if this is the SSD cache. Amazingly the cache is surviving restarts, but is being flushed on a shut down. I'm amazed that all this changes are sitting their in the cache - SSDs must be weird!

Hi folks, We've bought a number of new PCs which we're imaging using Ghost over the Summer hols. All PCs have been fine (other than a couple of DOAs) with one exception: 1. First we put on the Ghost image. 2. We configure the PC, which involves installing a handful of things, and two restarts (but not complete shutdowns). 3. The final bit of software we put on shuts the PC down, and we have to manually restart it. 4. On this problem PC it reverts back to Step 1 once we shut it down, as if the Ghost image has just been put on. I’ve never seen anything like this before, because the machine doesn’t revert to the Ghost image during the restarts. Anyone seen this before? (Note, the machines have SSDs) TIA

I'm not sure. The command is as follows: \\vc-dc1\NETLOGON\Bground\bginfo \\vc-dc1\NETLOGON\Bground\W7.bgi /timer:0 /NOLICPROMPT There doesn't seem to be any mention of where it's created. The image itself is also taken via group policy from the vc-dc1 server.

On the Sophos topic, how do I edit a policy in the console? I'm sure they used to appear below the groups on the bottom left-hand side, when in endpoint view. But they aren't there any more, and I can't spot any way of viewing them. Ugh.

Fine from the rangermanager account. Appears briefly on a student account, and then vanishes. I've tried cloning some of the settings from the rangermanager account, but still can't get it to appear continuously. Odd!

I'm fairly new to Sophos, but a colleague said this was the old icon, hence the concern - we also now have a white shield with blue trim and a blue "S". Ours used to be the three line icon, until yesterday afternoon. I remember them sending a vague email about a forced update that would take place in July, or around then at least.

Hi folks, Anyone using Sophos? We spotted the icon in the notification area changed yesterday afternoon. This morning all the client icons seem to have changed. I remember mention of a major update in July/August, but coincidentally our new license starts from tomorrow as well. In short, has the icon change happened for anyone else? TIA

Hi folks, We run BGINFO in a user script that sets the IP address, PC name, and username information in the top right-hand corner. I'm sure this was working when I first started at the school (Sep last year). During the last few months this has stopped working for student accounts, yet is still working for the rangermanager account. Specifically, when a student logs in it shows the BGINFO briefly, but it then vanishes. A desktop is set by group policy, but this remains in place. Any ideas as to why BGINFO is not working for students? TIA

Because it enables any user to see the root of the share e.g. folders, and filenames. As above they only have read-only access at the root of the folder, but they shouldn't really and it's just a kludge it seems to get naming working.

The more detail the better My networking skills are fairly rusty. I get the feeling this was setup in a legacy fashion, so if I get the time I'll revisit a redesign.

It worked! There's also the option at the autoplay dialog: click "2. Install". Then click Customize button in bottom left-hand corner, and on following dialog click "Install for anyone who users this computer (all users)". Thanks lots again, as that's (a) saved us from throwing away £1k of software and (b) means we don't have to go back to Cubase 4. I can't believe Steinberg support didn't know this...

Yes, that does cause the message to go away. I suppose the question is whether the message is even correct, but even if the index is running searching is still pretty slow. Ultrasearch seems to do a better job.
