Under settings I can actually define the access address (!). It was set to EduGeek.net - The I.T. Professionals' life line so I change it to the IP address of the PC with the same port. I can now access the PC locally via IP address, but it still doesn't work remotely. The requests button does show when the machine is accessing itself, but doesn't show anything when trying to access remotely. Again though it looks like a routing issue, as the local firewall is showing the remote PC getting a 503 error. I've changed the proxy to the upstream again, and now it's working remotely. So the Settings page fixed it!

If I use the upstream proxy it allows me to ignore for local addresses, which is enabled with the correct scope. I do have some other local resources e.g. network hardware, which do seem to resolve correctly.

When I switch the hosting PC to the county council proxy (not using our local proxy) - essentially our upstream proxy - I get a 400 error.

Then I get a "connection refused" error, which is from our upstream county council proxy. Having checked our local firewall it's giving a 503 error for the favicon.ico. Odd! Perhaps there's a routing issue?

I get a 400 error remotely: This error (HTTP 400 Bad Request) means that Internet Explorer was able to connect to the web server, but the webpage could not be found because of a problem with the address. For more information about HTTP errors, see Help.

Thanks, that's got me access back. Curiously I was using the right address, so no different, yet it worked via the Matrix link (!). Odd though that I still can't access remotely. I'm not quite sure where to start from a troubleshooting perspective.

Oddly the address I was using yesterday doesn't work at all today - page not found - but I haven't had much time to look into it yet.

Yes, firewall's disabled on the Windows PC. I tried accessing only by IP address. I installed on two PCs, and oddly the port was different on both machines. Not sure whether that's symptomatic of something?

Hi folks, (Hopefully this is the right forum as it does start with "Internet Related...") Among my many random requests I have been asked about setting up WordPress for students to use. I have zero knowledge about WordPress. I've asked a few IT friends and was mostly pointed towards Microsoft Web Platform as a simple place to start (short of building LAMP servers etc.) I've installed it on a Win 7 PC, but can't seem to configure it remotely - I've pointed to the server from another machine using the IP address, the relevant port, and /wp-admin (which is working as localhost). Can anyone advise what I'm doing wrong from a remote access POV, or recommend a guide? My long term plan is to install it on a dedicated VM which the students can trash, and I'll then just return to an earlier snapshot. TIA

Not specifically ruled out, but on one of our Admin machines Blocks Editor does exactly the same thing. As soon as I eliminate the firewall (route through the upstream proxy) it opens without issue.

We've narrowed it down to our firewall (Smoothwall). Currently waiting for their secondline support to look at it. Oddly the Smoothwall shows a loopback (127.0.0.1) being "forbidden", but the firstline tech didn't know how to resolve it.

Hi folks, Has anyone had any experience yet of migrating Kaleidos to Unify? Clearly based on this link (you'll need a Kaleidos account to view it) it's designed to go to RM's Site Creator and Office 365 https://www.klp.rm.com/establishments/88800001/RM%20Unify/RM%20Learning%20Platform%20Functional%20Replacements.pdf But is it a "single button" import, something more complex, or recreating the content from scratch? How is account management/permissions in Office 365 vs. Kaleidos? (Pinging @funkyfin2000 and @Andrew_Iles_RM) TIA

What do you make of Google Apps in terms of site construction, sharing etc.? It's one of the suggestions here for moving away from our current VLP (Kaleidos), albeit no doubt a very different solution.

(I appreciate Google Apps and Office 365 aren't strictly VLPs, but I know they have some shared site building functionality)

Thanks all. I've got this old view that the more complex wireless setups are done with a partner, but having thought about it a bit more we have all the cabling and locations ready to go (we have a piecemeal setup at the moment of independent WAPs) therefore it's more a case of swapping out kit, followed by controller setup. I know nothing about Radius, but have a fairly good knowledge of router and WAP setup. I don't know if we would go to the lengths of Radius, but at least have dual SSID WPA. The purpose of the dual SSID would be to add a visitor network, so some thought there would be required perhaps in terms of VLANs to keep away from school traffic. I'm guessing that Ruckus WAPs need PoE, or can they operate via a power adapter? (or failing that PoE injection, as we don't have capable switches)

Hi All, I've setup a test SSID with a 504 bit WPA passphrase, in the belief that (a) this is as strong as they get and (b) this makes it as difficult as possible to hack. Are there any downsides to using such a high strength passphrase e.g. (and forgive my naivety) would it make the connection slower? I'm checking ahead of deploying this in a wider environment. TIA

Have you self installed the Ruckus? I've always thought of these managed systems being installed and setup by a third party, but perhaps it's simpler than that. I've not checked the costs for Ruckus kit though.

Is the Ruckus system working yet? Would be interested to hear feedback. Unfortunately this is an inherited setup. I find both Netgear and D-Link kit to be less than brilliant, so this may ultimately be the problem. These are pretty old. I'm not sure when they were sold, but at a guess the ones we have are 6-7 years old. Really the whole lot needs to be chucked out and replaced with a managed system, but no budget for the next couple of years.

Yes, on the 350's it's up to 8 SSIDs. Good idea! Potential downside I guess is that the laptops might see this AP when a stronger WEP encrypted AP is nearer and default to the 350. Worth a try though. I'm struggling a bit with the 350 logs. It has a Syslog capability so I probably need to investigate that. Annoyingly I can't find something like a client list, so it's hard to easily tell who is connected. We have the reverse problem, all the laptops try to connect to the 302's instead of the 350's. I've done some more experimenting and upgrading of drivers. After all that was done to the 350's I didn't hard reset them - in part because a lot of them are located out of reach (of students). I did hard reset one of them though and it seemed to stabilise. Again it will require lots more testing, and roaming back and forth between APs to see if they are stable.

Both models are using an identical WEP key (and strength of WEP) but perhaps there's something about this older model than Windows prefers. It's odd that the Android tablet is behaving "normally" whereas Windows isn't, which does point the finger more towards Windows. I inherited the setup, but I suspect they've used WEP because we still have a handful of very old laptops and I know that very old drivers just can't cope with WPA. When we upgrade the whole setup we'll switch to WPA2. This was done for Atheros. The Intel drivers were Feb 2012 so I've just updated those to the latest (Apr 2013) on the test machines. Although for all 6 new Netgear's to be faulty? Seems odd. To add, before I did the upgrade of the 350's even my iPhone wouldn't connect to it. Now it seems both my iPhone and the Android tablet are connected to a 350, yet still problems with Windows PCs.

These APs are all configured for UK settings, and are definitely only using 1-11 - I've been using the excellent inSSIDer to do some testing throughout the school. InSSIDer is showing that laptops sometime connect to the 350's then switch to the 302's even though in some cases the signal strength is much much lower. Often though they don't connect to the 350's at all. Part of the problem is the inconsistent behaviour, but mostly the 350's just aren't used. I've just fired up an Android tablet (Nexus 7) with inSSIDer and that immediately connected to the 350 without issue, so is this a Windows problem? I've tested with a mix of laptops, and have updated all the wireless drivers. The laptops have a mix of chipsets also e.g. Atheros and Intel (the latter usually being fairly bombproof).
