Blocking Flash Games Software restriction Policies... Hash
burgemaster replied to MyDejaVu's topic in Windows
Hi Grayda, Could you please let me know how using group policy, you: - Prevent certain filetypes from being copied anywhere We would like to completely block SWF from being copied from thier D: / E: USB flash drives. Many thanks Tim -
Thanks mate, we have 2 OneLan box displays setup (that the receptionist`s manage). The PE department has a 32" LCD on the wall running powerpoints that they manage... they seem to be doing a really good job with it. Even though I might enjoy setting it all up and all that, i think if they had to learn a new software we would end up doing it all for them on a regular basis!!..... Thanks

Thanks for the ideas, we have been to the admin dept and helped them with plenty of timesaving ideas, labels, detention letters etc. Might have a look at: 1) How about a technical knowledge base using some wiki software - Good idea 2) Internal searchable phone directory on intranet (search-as-you-type style) Good Idea 3) First aid requests via intranet (room number, sent to receptionist, they then radio for roving first aiders) - Good idea 4) Nagios Network monitoring - Great Idea 5) Microsoft Configuration Manager (License came with VMM but have yet to set it up) 6) Print Master by Webman @Danbunta - School has purchased "Uniservity" and regarding licences we have a M$ select agreement and already purchased licences, so no yearly license costs @tom_newton - Can you please suggest where to start? sounds interesting? @localzuk - already done, but can ask again @rh91uk - Email for staff/student is already on exchange 2k7. We use Serco Facility/Eportal here which I already manage. @webman - I have setup facility to produce letters and labels for detention when a report is run. Eportal lets them see their student timetable when logged in. Webmain im suprised you didnt suggest your Print Master? Great ideas, thankyou all.... any more for any more ??????

As per title, we have a great network, worked really hard over the last couple of years after a full rebuild and now have everything ticking away just as we like it... We have no money left to implement any new large projects, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for cheap or "free" projects that might make a difference in the school? We are not sat twiddling our thumbs as there are always the usual IT tickets, but as the budgets are getting slashed it seems that we are just keeping everything ticking over and not moving forward. We would love to have something to work on and challenge us when we are done with the tickets?? Few previous free projects done: Password Self Service Shutdownotron Room Booking Helpdesk installed Lanview running Truecrypt rolled out Network status Smoothwall filtering In house School website, Custom start/homepages for staff/students/Admin Any suggestions would be great !!! (We do have around 7k that we will have to use to replace aging computers around the school, but if your idea can pursuade me that this money would better benifit the school im all ears) Thanks in Advance

Windows 7 renamed our user network folders to my documents
burgemaster replied to dombera's topic in Windows 7
The above is a bit tricky when you have mixed Xp and Win7/Vista with accounts allready setup. -
I have been with Virgin (Cable) for 8 years and only had the internet twice in total !!! BUT i did have to call virgin support once to get my FTP settings for the free webspace. The guy did not know what "Web Space" was and said that they dont do it. in the end I went along with him and hung up. Found the solution on the user forums.

It was infact none of the above !!!!!!!!!! We had used "Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK)" to deploy IE8 before it was available in Windows Update. In the deploy settings there are proxy settings that OVER RIDE GROUP POLICY !!!!!! I created a updated deployment file without the proxy settings changed and now everything is working!!

Can anyone please recommend any type of computer game for a student "Games Club"? Pre-Requisites: Obviously not any 18+ games, No 3d acceleration, pretty low spec would be better. Would need to be multiplayer on our network If possible no "Console" or anything like that so they can enable GOD MODE etc etc Free or very cheap !!! If possible, restrictable and configurable - So they can only play with students in the room, not online If possible have a "Camera or Spectator" that could highlight players on the projector Thanks in advance!

At last! I removed the proxie settings from the Student_default policy and create a "Set Proxy" GP. that seemed to work, could the "Student_Default" GP have become corrupt? CJF - Just noticed that we do actually have "Disallow Interactive Users from generating Resultant Set of Policy data" Thanks for the help
-
Ok, im guessing that im getting that error from RSOP as the user does not have permissions to run RSOP. But still cant get the policy to apply? It is only "Group Policty -> User Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Internet Explorer Maintenance -> Connection -> Proxy Settings" where the settings are set? theres not a second place? Thanks CJF, will try that now
-
Hi all we have changed our proxy details slightly over the holiday as we have Smoothwall installed. So some reason on some machines the Group Policy is not changing? I have checked RSOP and all the currect policys are set to apply. For Staff they seem to be applying but for students, they do not get applied. I have done a GPRESULT but get the following error: INFO: The user "DOMAIN\S14-02$" does not have RSOP Data Any idea why there is a machine name instead of a username? Staff also get this error? Can anyone please help?

Simple SMB Share not working since reboot ??? Confused
burgemaster replied to burgemaster's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
Can anyone please help on this? When setting up the link to the share (to our nas server) on the photcopier, in "SMB Setup" there is a serach button, we can search and first see out domain and then when we browse into our domain we can then see various computers, most are servers. But NOT our NAS server? What would make a workstation list itself in this SMB list please? Why do we only see some servers and random computers?? We have Netbios protocol disbaled in DCHP. Please help!!!! -
"Time Zone" is sorted To stop changing the time zone you need to Assign a group the rights to change it as the default is "Administrators, Users" Ive set: "Change the Time Zone" in Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\User Rights Assignment To "Administrators" and its now students get a denied warning.

This may help anyone if they have to do what ive just had to do... Ive brought a very old machine with the "Ranger Client" still installed back from retiredment, as Ranger is removed from the servers they is officially no way to uninstal the clients, the FAQ says format and reimage. 1. Delete the Ranger folder from c:\program files and delete the Rngrupdt directory from the root of the c:\. 2. Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hyperion Security Software 3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and find the value 'shell' and change the value from 'rgrshsub.exe' to 'explorer.exe' 4. Change 'Userinit' from 'rgrunit.exe' to 'userinit.exe'

thanks for the help... I think ive found a better alternative.. "USB Detect & Launch" is a freeware program that runs on the PC in the background monitoring, when it see`s a USB drive inserted (checks every X number of seconds) it can then run any script you like. So, my next question is q) Do any apps like this still run when the PC is locked? Can I set XP to do this? I want the PE staff to simply plug in a walk off ! Thanks in advance http://www.endpoint.eclipse.co.uk/wordpress/usb-dal-screenshot.gif

Hi all, I was wondering if it would be possible for anyone to suggest a way that: 1) Students in PE lessons use their six "Flip USB Cameras" to record thier video. 2) At the end of the lesson they take back the camera to the PE office and plug it into one of the free six usb cables (connected via USB hub to the PC) 3) without any interaction the autorun (or any other mechanism) then copies all the video files from the camera to a network share, 4) all video files are deleted on the camera, If anyone has any suggestions for this It would be great as it would mean the PE staff would save hours copying over video files from the 6 cameras at the end of each lesson Thanks in advance!!!! http://www.flipblack.co.uk/res/img/flip-black-usb-arm.png

Simple SMB Share not working since reboot ??? Confused
burgemaster replied to burgemaster's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
both IPs are both still the same and are correct in DNS. In WINS, the NAS is marked as "Released" is this correct? Thanks for the help. -
We have a Canon photocopier that has the option to scan to a network SMB share. It has been working for 2 years, but since updating a SCSI card driver and rebooting the server last night it now cannot reach the server? All other shares are fine in the school. It simply scans to "\\NAS\Scanned Documents" I have set the photocopier to scan to another server with a test share and all is working fine, so I guess it must be the NAS server. Its allthough the firewall is on or something (its not). What has to be enabled/selected/ticked to get a worstation in this list please? When I click BROWSE on the photocopier it list lots of other servers and workstations but does not show NAS. when I manually type in NAS it times out. Anyone please got any suggestions???? (ive tried creating a new test share on the NAS with everyone permissions and also tried via IP address)
