We are quite happy about people swiping singly, as it will be made disciplinary not to swipe in and out, its more the bottleneck we are trying to tackle. During the day, it will be fine, but at 8:30/9 and 4:30, with students all lined up and trying to get in/out, we want to make it easier. We aren't even worried about the access door at those times, it is more knowing who is in and who is not. Single file through a gate may give us a very long queue 2 mins before lectures start!! I may have to call a paxton consultant(that made me shudder)

Morning all, We are looking into securing the main points of entry into our centres, and to have a better way of logging who is in the building in these weird times. We are looking at Paxton with contactless readers, but some bright spark piped up and asked what happens if half a dozen students are at the door, are we really going to make them all wait to scan and enter, scan and enter, or can we have multiple readers at the door, and make it mandatory to pass their card over one and receive a beep or green light irrespective of the door lock status? Does that makes sense? Is it an issue others have come across? Thanks James

Basically yes, although we start a one to one meeting and ask them to share that way, rather than in a big meeting. Although Teams now allows you to break out a main meeting into a mini meeting of your chosen person, so you could easily break out of a meeting, and remote support

It is a backward step, but so many forms of auth we use rely on 802.11x and AD to function with no option to connect to azure. Wifi(unifi) would be the main use of this, at the moment we have to use WPA2, as we have no function to allow the access points to auth from azure. We also want the students to log in to on-prem AD connected machines, so our Watchguards can track usage and properly log access to blocked websites, again this function is all based on on-prem AD. At the moment we have generic student logins, which is hell for tracking, we an identify the computer, then have to refer to a lecturers seating plan to work out the actual student, as as you can probably gather this is not ideal for reporting or timely nailing down infractions.

Artemis Fowl, watched it with OH and her 11 yo on Saturday night. We all actually enjoyed it, although its a bit light on the original source material, and obviously compressed into a film format. I remember reading the books many moons ago when they came out in the early 2000's. Definitely set up for a series of film, but critics have panned it and release on D+ and not theatrical will probably kill it dead, as not sure how they will recoup 125 mil!!

Give Dave Moxon at Kuiper Technology a call for Unifi, I've found him able to beat the likes of 4Gon in the past in terms of price. Also the guy that basically halved our last Watchguard purchase from other resellers(40k to 20k!)

We are always pushing against the tide that's education for you! What use case would that feature be for then, if not ours? I would love tech that had Azure AD built in, but it is not in tech we have, and I can't see budgets stretching to upgrading to the probably high cost of ripping everything out and going higher end enterprise to get that functionality. Just to add to this, Autodiscover has to work properly and point back to your on-prem, and not O365 when in hybrid anyway, as the DNS setup when you setup email wants you to point AutoDiscover to Cloud, which removes the calendar icon as Teams can't find on-prem calendaring!

I was hoping to avoid a password reset!! But current thinking is export out data, and script it into AD, then sync back, then wait for the inevitable flood of helpdesk tickets from students and the stock reply of "read the banner on the VLE, and the email we sent telling you about a password reset"!!

Morning all, We keep all out students in AAD, nicely created by scripts, and all our staff in AD. Has worked well for years, but now we want to bring those student accounts into AD, so we can start using Radius services for Wi-Fi, and allow students to login locally, etc, etc. Seems adsync will work nicely from local to cloud, but they tested the other way about 5 years ago, then removed it. Surely if they want people to go to cloud in the enterprise/education, they should provide some way of doing Radius in AAD, without an uber expensive 3rd party system like JumpCloud/IronWifi or having an Azure server running radius services in the cloud, which requires a higher level of AAD and cost for the server. Anyone done this, and have any tips/tricks? Thanks James

Your 200MB line may be too small then! I would be looking at the traffic on the router at peak times and see if any one thing is hammering it, think it will take some investigation. 100 to 200 is not a big jump in the big scheme of things

Afternoon all, We are seeing an unusual amount of non-spam email coming in with randomly numbered dat attachments, so not winmail.dat, eg 850000.dat or the like. Anyone seen this before? This is after they are received by EOP up at microsoft and arrive at our on-prem scanner, MailScanner Thanks James

Does your router or Wi-Fi system have a way of limiting the bandwidth each user gets? What is the policy on bandwidth hungry applications, ie games, downloads, etc, etc? When I was at boarding school, it was the first appearance of the OG game-boy, which one of the kids bought from elsewhere in the world before it was released in the UK, that thing was very bandwidth friendly

We use fs.com for GBIC's SFP and SFP+ and DAC cables, never had a incompatibility issue, why pay hundreds, when you can pay penny's on the pound!! Just note which warehouse they are shipping from, due to taxes and shipping times. Much like Hobbyking, if anyone is into RC/drones

We got a crazy deal on upgrading our 200 to 1GB from BT at the beginning of this pandemic, £160 per month extra, so £700 a month for the 200/200 and £860 for the 1GB, I had to get them to confirm it twice!! Ok we had to resign for the 5 year term, but when are we not going to need bandwidth! Oh and VLAN and QoS, keep it nice and dedicated(as much as you can before it hits the no mans land known as the open internet)
