  1. Currently 4 hyper-v, all dual socket, and 2 ESXi, both dual, 5 figure cost unfortunately even with edu discount
  2. Thanks for all the input, I was all ready to pitch the Veeam pill to the higher ups, but then I saw the cost for 12 sockets, so I might have to fix DPM!
  3. Thanks for that, have a call in with Altaro for pricing, and just about to reach out to Veeam. I think they use a reseller program, so any one have any recommendations for education biased resellers to talk to? Thanks James
  4. Afternoon all, We are currently using DPM 2019 with a VM running modern storage in Primary at our main site which backs up all our VM's, and all our item level backups. We then have another VM at our DR site running as secondary backing up the VM's for the aforementioned disaster scenario(hopefully zombopcalypse ). Works well for the most, but we are conscious that if the primary has problems, it *should* fail over to the secondary and continue protection, and we don't want to be in the situation where this doesnt work and we find both servers without up to date replicas(it can happen, if for instance you change the password that DPM uses for its SQL database, it will stop both servers in their tracks with no warning). We also know it's not easy to do Primary/Primary setup, as we would have to synchronise watches to make sure backup windows didn't clash etc. So, what other backup software out there has DR capabilities, but isn't dependant on a primary/secondary setup, but can take the same backup at roughly the same time? Basically 2 standalone backup servers doing the same job, or does the same thing we have now but better! Thnaks James
  5. Yep, the Tiffany bit hooked me as well. It linked them all together as a family. Oh and best CGI chimp ever!
  6. Really enjoying The Umbrella Academy, even the set musical pieces, which I usually hate(yes, I'm looking at you, Buffy:"Once more, with Feeling"). Also pilot of Doom Patrol. Some nice diversion from the usual Marvel stuff
  7. Russian Doll. Excessive drug use and a lot trippy(obv.), only 2 episodes in, but so far so interesting
  8. Carmen Sandiego, I remember playing the original computer game, and thought I'd give the new animated series a go. Actually very good, soon ran out of episodes to watch! Also Discovery S2, apart from Tilly being strangely hot, much better tone than the darkness of S1, more humour and crew focused in my opinion.
  9. I agree on Titans, not a fan of the DC universe, but found this quite engaging, although uber-dark compared to the MCU.
  10. Only standard I'm afraid. I had forgotten about remoteapp, that might just be the winning formula. Thanks all
  11. Ah well, dang it, back to the drawing board! Probably just end up giving them a whole VMWare View desktop just for an app! Thanks James
  12. Afternoon all, Quandary, we are looking at application virtualization technologies and want one that ideally uses the resources, memory, IP, CPU of the server and not the client. We have already ruled out ThinApp, as that runs solely on the client, but I am not so sure on App-V. Is it the same as ThinApp and uses the local resources or does it actaully stream from its server? I know you can do this with Citrix and publish an actual app, but VMWare doesnt seem to have a similar technology. We have multiple sites, and some of our business app send full fat SQL between clients, and the VPN doesn't like this, and they run like a dog at a different site to the SQL server. We want to run the locally and access them remotely! Thanks James
  13. Evening all, We have a 2016 server set up as a single nic DA and VPN server, currently giving out DHCP addresses on the LAN for the IKEv2/SSTP side of things. This is fine for the handful of users that use IKEv2/SSTP but we are planning to add a shedload of external users and we just don't have enough addresses on our main LAN subnet. In the Remote Access Server set up wizard, there is the option to add static IP ranges instead of DHCP. If I were to add a completely different subnet range in there, ie current LAN is 192.168.x.0 and I add a range from 192.168.y.0, is it just a case of adding a route in RRAS from one to the other or is there more to it, in terms of our main hardware router etc? Would there be problems with the 2 subnets coexisting on the same wired LAN such as DHCP being forced on them anyway? In the old days I would have just converted to a dual NIC VPN server, connected the second NIC to a vLan on our main router and let that do DHCP and away, but as we have DA, and no chance of them coming back in to get new config, I cant just chuck the server/reconfigure the server just in case I make our DA users irate! Benefit of hindsight really. Anyone come across/converted this way? Thanks James
  14. Binged the last series of A Series of Unfortunate Events, great season, no song and dance numbers this time thankfully, and a satisfying ending, mostly. Also Titans, really enjoyed it, even if the DC universe is darker than the inside pocket of my jacket. New series on Friday too.
  15. Holy forking shirt balls, loving The Good Place at the moment
  16. "Baldrick, I want you to go out and buy a turkey so large, you'd think it's mother had been rogered by an omnibus"
  17. They are definitely being disruptive, I am getting vendors coming in to me to pitch things, and as soon as I mentioned we are a Unifi user, they suddenyl back track and tell me $brand is bringing out model that compete on price with Ubiquiti. One was Dell who have 1000 series switches and 2000 series switches that compete. Well the 1xxx does-ish on the PoE model, but they are only half the ports PoE, and the 2xxx is every port but hundreds more than the equivalent Edgeswitch. Also one of the big wireless companies is going to start shipping "cheap" wifi, can't remember if it was Ruccus or another one. But it all means disruption is happening.
  18. I have the small gateway, AP's, outdoor POE switches, G3 cameras and nanostations..at home though.
  19. Loving Sabrina too, only all I see when I see the high priest is Jeff, all melty men and giggle loops "When God made the arse, he didn't say, 'Hey, it's just your basic hinge, let's knock off early.' He said, 'Behold ye angels, I have created the arse. Throughout the ages to come, men and women shall grab hold of these, and shout my name!" Sorry Coupling segue!
  20. Good morning all, We have an insecure admin password for AD, as in generic word of mouth between IT team password. We are looking into modern methods of making this more secure, as in 2 factor etc. We want something that can be used easily at desktops and RDP to servers etc. What do others user? Just a suitably complicated passwords or RSA or DUO or YUBI etc Thanks James
  21. The Orville. Oh..my..god..why haven't CBS sued the backside off FOX (I know why, but still). Actually quite enjoyed it, especially the surprisingly ethical notions of episode 3, worthy of a Picard/Prime Directive conundrum.
  22. Yes, watched ep 1 series 5 of Z Nation last night, as @witch says, interesting. Full of clichés as usual, with the usual time line bending, please explain story line
  23. Anyone else a bit meh about the first episode of Jodie Whittaker's Doctor? I am hoping it will get better once they introduce the TARDIS back etc. Apologies to those who loved it, but I couldn't quite engage with her as the doctor, as apart from the sonic swiss army knife, she wasn't very doctorish, if that makes sense?
  24. I love CENTOS as work, but have had Debian on my home server(which is a Wyse thin client with an AMD chip on par with an ATOM) for ages. I have now gone i3 for my new server, but Debian ran really well on the low powered thin client.
  25. Ours takes precious minutes, when students are wondering where word is and then complain! We are only sending over Word, Excel, Powerpoint and VMWare Horizon. Seconds would be lovely! What policy section are you using to send them out? Might be more ways to skin a cat, and I'm using the wrong one!
