Q:What's 3 feet long, red, pointed at one end, looks cool but doesn't work:eek:? A: the "Oracle" rocket, containing a small video camera, the science dept have bought. I've installed the software on 2 XP laptops now, but on both it fails when connected as an "unrecognisable USB device", and the software they provide with it "can't find a video capture device". Has anyone else seen one / had problems with one?? have we got a faulty one?

Currently changing the previously dull CpsFileSrv1 etc. to Harry Potter theme as they are replaced. Argus the ISA server, Flitwick the terminal server, Hermione the backup server. Severus the SIMS server coming this summer. Saving Albus and Harry for when I replace the DCs Wireless APs are named after Hogwarts ghosts: Myrtle, BloodyBarron, Nick etc.

I'm in Cumbria, we use CLEO, but I know it's sometimes a slightly different flavour to Lancs CLEO... but this is what I would try. CLEO DID, I think make some changes to the way the web proxies work over half term, but I'm not sure exactly what they were. First, Can you ping wwwcache.cleo.net.uk from the isa server when it's not responding? Second, If you ping it several times, you may notice that it resolves to a different IP (a choice of about 4 I think) some of the time. Try putting one of those in as your upstream proxy rather than wwwcache.cleo.net.uk - if that fixes it you may need to contact CLEO for advice as you are riding rough-shod over their load balancing system - but I'll leave that to your concience;) Just thinking that the change of IP address "mid stream" could be causing problems...

Partly, as in I try to get the staff to. We have a (LP+) Sharepoint VLE, so have created a list on the staff area for the purpose. If I'm not mega busy I do still usually respond to "can you justs", wherever possible, but the staff are usually ok about logging issues when I'm busy. I put solutions to the problems on the list too, in the hope that they maybe helpful to other users to sort their problems out. (Small 11-16 secondary, NOR: 381)

I used to, but support afterwards was a nightmare like once I'd built a PC for someone they expect you to fix every little thing and as I'd built it and I'm a softy I felt responsible. Don't do it anymore as I hated charging per hour. That's also why I work in the public sector - I just hate asking for money!

Bullseye! now how did that get in there???

The attached image (hopefilly - I've never tried posting with an image before!) shows a backup of one of the folders containing student file stores. The server (2003) exhibits exactly the same behaviour. The folder in question (though it happens sporadically in other year groups as well) is the one in the middle, named "Documents"... but it's not! I shall enlarge. The folder is actually called what it should be, the username of the user whose filestore it is, just like all the others around it (hence the need to blur them out - we haven't got unreadable usernames in that year group yet). Double clicking it opens it up, and the path at the top displays as it should, with the correct username. From a command prompt, all seems to be well too with no evidence of the problem. Renaming "Documents" to something else changes renames the way ALL such occurrences in all year groups displays... "My documents" IS redirected by a GPO to a folder inside the filestore, but if that was the cause why hasn't it done it on all of them, just odd ones... What's it doing, why's the icon changing and how the bejeepers do I stop it?!

It sure would - that'd be great! I may well be able to chop lumps out of it and use it! It doesn't I tried. I suppose that's schematically almost identical to my first attempt using the security tab Wow, now that is thinking outside the box! I could, I suppose give that a go (I've never tried anything like that either)... but I'll try terrorvis's script first methinks as the "alternative subnet" would also entail putting another server in to host the printer (25 workstations so I can't do it from a workstation) and allsorts of fun getting them to see their network drives etc.! Sincerely, thanks to all for your ideas and contributions to this - I can't help thinking it shouldn't be this hard!!

People, yes, no problem, that's not the issue - what I need is for anyone to be able to print to the printer as long as they're printing from one of the PCs that's allowed to print to it

Just for one printer, yes. A department has bought their own printer (identical model to others in school - they DID consult me first), but only want users from their own room to be able to print to it as they've paid for it themselves. Agreed, and I'm looking at print quota-ing to promote responsible printing from September - I'd rather not go for the "screwed down" approach in this case

It's desirable, normally, that they can change their printers - there aren't that many colour printers around and if someone is in a room without a printer, or without a colour printer, or where the printer is on the blink, it's better if they can send it somewhere else if needs be. I suppose I could add a line to explicitly remove the printer in question... but it would still be browsable

@SC-UK: it's pretty flexible really - the default printer is set by a VB script at login (detecting the start of the machine name and then choosing and setting as appropriate), but all the printers are browseable and I've created a set of batch files (rundll,PruntUi )to set their default printer to any other, should they need to. All I need to do is stop a particular printer being used by people outside a certain room (hence restricting print jobs to those coming from certain PCs)

Is is possible, using bog standard Windows 2003, to restrict printing to a shared printer to jobs sent from certain PCs? In the security setting for the printer I've tried removing the "everyone: print" permission, then adding the computers with print access, but it doesn't seem to work... you just get "access denied" when you try and open the printer.

Another thought drifted into my head... when you say users can't log in, do you mean they hang for ages but get in eventually, or do they actually fail with a timeout fault code? if it's the latter, adding commandtimeout=99999 to the connect.ini file, just below the "databasename=" line, will stop it from timing out

I'm a little rusty having left the SIMS helpdesk a couple of years ago, but... The first thing to try is to do a backup from system manager - this seems like an odd thing to say but it trims the SIMS.LDF file down to size and increses perfomance. Failing that, there's a reindex patch available - request it from your local support team and apply it - then do another backup as that inflates the LDF too (allow up to an hour for DbUpgrade to run it). What version of SQL Server are you running and how many users have you got?

there's a thingy that plugs into SIMS that does it... I can't remember what it's called though:doh: school comms or something I think. Your local SIMS support team (or failing that SIMS in Bedford direct SIMS - Schools Information Management System - Capita Education Services) will be able to advise you. As for us, after reading this thread: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/general-chat/30279-telephone-answering-systems.html I've signed us up for a Sipgate 0845 number that parents can call and hear a recorded message. That's free the SIMS one almost certainly isn't!

As a NM in a small school, It sounds to me as if the job description may be unusually accurate! you do end up doing EVERYTHING! besides keeping the network and PCs going, add in lunchtime clubs, classroom assistant work, sound engineering, doing one-off sessions in local primary schools and I've even appeared in the timetable this year. Anyone got a brush?! I'm not complaining btw, this is my second stint in this school - I knew exactly what I was coming back to - just saying the advert may be unusually frank

I'm guessing one of the many little database files that comprise T4, specifically the one controlling access, has got corrupted somehow. There is PROBABLY nothing in the snova folder that's changed much today so you should just be able to restore that folder from backup (unless anyone here knows the precise file you need) and all will be well. It is worth checking with your timetabler etc. that they haven't been working on it all day first (as T6 stuff may be in the same folder) though otherwise you could be, erm, unpopular. T4 is little more than a viewer that prints pretty(er) timetables in most schools these days - it just sucks the data from SQL rather than actualy doing anything with it.

I got my last one from Projectors from Projector Point - LCD and DLP Projectors to Buy or Hire, but it'll almost certainly cheaper to buy a new projector than a new lamp
