Are students under 16 old enough to give consent for their data to be published??? shouldn't that type of consent come from parents?? Personally, I'd point them in the direction of SIMS Assessment Manager - that's the secure gadget for the job, I'd suggest.

@ Ozzy: That could sort the first problem - the storing of stuff on the desktop I suppose... but I'd still like an easy way to put commonly used shortcuts there right in front of them and a single, central, read-only folder and redirection seemed the best way to me... no?

I'm fed up of the kids storing cr@p on their desktops and bloating their profiles (or not logging off because their profile limit is exceeded) AND I want an easy way to deploy shortcuts to desktops... So I decided to go down the redirection route. I've created a folder on a server, set the NTFS permissions to everyone:full control, set the share permissions to everyone:read and domain admins:full control, and sorted the GPO to switch it on. Then on a workstation, ran gpupdate /force /wait:-1 and logged in with a test account excitedly. It didn't work the following appeared in the event log: Failed to perform redirection of folder Desktop. The new directories for the redirected folder could not be created. The folder is configured to be redirected to <\\argus\userdesktop>, the final expanded path was <\\argus\userdesktop>. The following error occurred: This security ID may not be assigned as the owner of this object. I don't want the user to be the owner of the folder... that's the whole point!! Where did I go wrong? apart from getting exited about folder redirection

Here's a good one for any sharepoint experts out there... Is it possible to copy files to a sharepoint document library:)..... from the command prompt? As I'm in the process of setting up our VLE (LP+), I'm copying large quantities of files up, a few of which are rejected by the platform due to their size, file type etc. Opening the document library in windows explorer works fine, until a file is rejected, at which point copying stops until I click "OK".:mad: If only I could use Xcopy, or better still RoboCopy, the relief would be incredible as I could leave it to gradually upload a few gigs unnattended! I can't map a drive with "net use..." or "subst" either - been down that route.... there has to be a way doesn't there?

The big issue here is where their work is saved. If it's not in the profile (eg. if you have "my documents" mapped to a network drive) then just move them, as in rename the folder that holds the roaming profile and create a new one with the original name. everyone will then get a shiny new one when they next log in and you can keep their old profiles hanging around for a while, just in case anyone squeels. If there is work in there, then it's a bit more of a problem and a manual clean out may be needed

I've had the same feelings myself about machines used as print servers etc. I guess it's down to the individual(s) concerned how literally you interpret the rules and how much common sense is employed.

Aria and Microdirect both will - but as I say you need something you can "upgrade from", so it's a false economy to buy them totally bare as you'll then need to get "Retail" windows rather than the cheaper OEM version that you can only get with hardware.

AFAIK the Windows licence in the SA covers UPGRADES to windows - you still need an OEM or whatever version, of some kind, to upgrade from. For this reason a few years ago I bought 200 Windows 3.1 licences for 20p each, just in case What it means in practice is that new hardware needs to be bought with the cheapest M$ operating system available, like XP Home or Vista Home Basic depending on which way the wind is blowing, then your upgrade lic covers the rest.

So is it Academic Open that you use now for Microsoft stuff now, or is there something else out there that I've missed completely?

We've currently got a Microsoft School Agreement for our 250 or so PCs, in which we count up our computers once a year and pay for them for the year. The advantage of that is that we can then add as many computers as we like without worrying about licenses until the following year - as it covers all machines on site. This costs us about £26.50 per machine (IIRC). The downside is that I've been doing a bit of blue sky thinking recently:nerd: and I'm thinking of (a) buying perpetual licenses to save in the long run, and / or (b) converting some older PCs to thin clients with a terminal server. Under the School Agreement I'd still have to declare the thin clients as you have to declare every PC that is capable of running Windows (AIIRC). Basically what I'm interested in knowing is if anyone has left a School Agreement, why, what you went to and ballpark what it cost:confused:
