Now the new financial year has arrived, I'm starting to think about getting our next batch of laptops for teachers in. The following are all available within £5 of each other from one my usual suppliers though I'll ask the Edusponsors for quotes later. Based on your experiences, rumours or manufacturer predjudices, which ones would you go for? The only problem with that is if you have to move SIMS to another server in a hurry:eek: with a redirect on the local machine and the full [sIMSConnection] as above on a mapped drive, all you have to do is change the login script to map the drive to a different server, edit the connect.ini on the mapped drive and you're away. After you've set up another server, of course:)

If there is a windows driver, there's no yellow !, and usually it's fine. What I don't want is users being prompted to install hardware or reduced system performance, and I find the easiest way to avoid both is to get rid of all the unknown stuff.

If you're using full SQL have you adjusted the surface area thingy to accept connections from outside the local machine?

I've got CorelDRAW! 2.0 installed at home for amusement value:D That's the version BEFORE the wysiwyg editor, where you get a wireframe to edit and a wysiwyg preview rendered next to it... Eee them were't days:)

I did once think of setting up the following and taking a photo just to see what the response would be on here: Pc > VGA-Cat5 Extender > Wireless AP (configured as bridge) ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Wireless AP (configured as bridge) > Cat5-VGA converter > Monitor:D But seriously, COULD it work?

As long as you don't try to put it through a switch:rolleyes:, then it should work OK:) Just remember that every connection will degrade the signal a small amount. I usually get cabley adaptery stuff from here: http://www.lindy.co.uk/

Is it possible to isolate that switch (disconnect the uplink) without bringing the network crashing down? if so, try it, see if the ping time returns to normal. If it does, I'm going for a loop.

LAN storm? or has some eejit looped a cable? Check your switches - are any of them going mad? Edit: Nobody's running a ghost multicast are they? that can wipe out whole chunks of network (especially wireless APs)

Yup - occasionally - they're great - so underrated just because Barbie had one apparently:cool: thing is they're only half the weight of a landrover so where big 4x4s sink in the mud, Suzis skim over the top. When I bought it the freewheeling hubs were knackered so Dad and I popped down to the scrapyard and picked up a couple of fixed ones (for £3) and fitted them instead. Tested our handywork in a disused quarry - in low range it's damn near unstoppable! When it snowed my OH's grown up kids suddenly stopped ridiculing it and weren't embarassed to be seen in it anymore - seeing as it was the only vehicle on the street that could get off the drive

I decided to jump off the fast/expensive/comfy car route last year and bought a soft top V-Reg Suzuki Vitara! It'll do 70, great in the summer, FANTASTIC in snow:cool:, costs pennies to fix, dead easy to work on (you can change the oil from under the bonnet - there's so much space) and it's a hoot to drive! for blattering down the lanes to work and back it's perfect. My OH has a C4 that we use for longer journeys - after the Vitara it feels like a Ferrari, but compared to it so numb and uncommunicative! One regret: If I'd gone for the Jimny instead I'd have been able to drive it into school and down the corridor to my office:D - the Vit's just 1.25in too wide to get through the door That make you feel better?!

Brainwave! Just going to stick one of the old unmanaged netgear APs in the room where they're working and do it anyway!

As it's the holidays, I need to move the ZoneDirector from its test position on my desk into the server room. Unfortunately, the PE dept have got a load of kids in doing BTEC coursework on laptops:rolleyes: needless to say they didn't think to tell me... but anyway What I need to know is: Do the APs stop working when I unplug the ZoneDirector ? My guess is that they'll carry on regardless but I just need confirmation cos I'm a chicken. Cheers!

Is youtube working for you? Our unfiltered connection can normally access it but we're just getting an error form "apache server at http://www.youtube.com port 80" These days it's so unusual for a big website to go down like that I'm thinking it must be a problem nearer home...

+1 of course a hung parliament effectively means the Lib Dems are in power - Labour and Conservative usually cancel each other out so the Lib dems position would be decisive.
