Edit2: +1 for ABtutor - you only buy the tutor licences, clients are free - about £100 iirc

Well, I don't know what our school's made of, I thought so too struggling to get a decent signal through more than one floor or two walls at the moment; I think the old APs actually went through walls better they handle large numbers of connections, like a room full of netbooks, much better though... I THINK I've got them set up right, I've put the power up to full in the setup - any ideas what, if anything, I've done wrong?

An in-the-shower-thinking-moment this morning: how directional are the access points? are they best laid on their backs or hung on a wall - if they are hung on a wall do they get a "blind spot" behind them? Just wondering...

SIMS won't report behaviour points between dates straight out of the box; it needs a bit of fudging (as in reporting all the points for all the incidents and using a macro to add em up) _Behaviour Points.zip

That's exactly what I wanted:D like old Ejay, free and it works! Just fiddled with it for 10 mins, and I made something that sounds like 90% of what's on Radio1:troll: Unfortunately I'm a Radio2 listener, but the kids'll love it;)

The thing with Ejay is it came loaded with a heap of ready-made samples from various genres - all the user has to do is lay them down - that's the hook, the instant success:) Audacity is a useful gadget for certain things, but it lacks the simplicity we're after in this case. Thanks anyway

We're currently still running a free version of Ejay SE that the last ICT Coordinator got off the front of a magazine in the nineties (seriously!). Whilst it coughs, splutters, hates networks, crashes, doesn't always save work etc. etc. it basically does what is needed: lets kids of all abilities arrange out of the box sound samples in tracks to make up their own mixes easily - simple drag and drop. AFAIK the company that wrote it went bust and the later versions (that would no-doubt run better) are, from the feedback on Amazon etc, pretty dire. Has anyone come across a similar product recently? or is there a version on sale somewhere out there that is comparable to the original one in its simplicity and efficacy?

Within reason, and if, a big if, your staff can be trusted to keep their passwords secure, I don't see a problem with having it on most PCs. If you set the NTFS permissions on s:\sims\connect.ini so that pupil accounts can't access it then the kids would actually have to be logged in as a teacher to open it, and then have a sims username and password, too.

just managed to get the download manager window to open (but still no data came through) in Opera so I could get at the full URL it's pointing to... I've found direct links to the 2 files it was trying to download (in case anyone else has this trouble in the future) but I better not post them here - PM me if you need them:) saved them to a folder and ran the .exe..... and it works @JCollings: Couldn't get any data through the download manager even going strainght out to Lancaster - but it doesn't matter I've got it now thanks I'm just putting together a few suggestions of which Photoshop is one - we've got a concurrent licenses for Photoshop 6 (old) and Elements 2, which are used at the mo. New versions of Elements and Paint Shop Pro are also in the frame, and I'll get that GimpShop, too.

Our Art dept. has some money they need to spend before the end of the financial year and they've asked me to help them:D Probably going to suggest a mix of hardware and software as they need updates to both so as part of the planning process I legitimately need the trial version of Photoshop Extended CS4 to see how it runs on some of our existing machines. Trouble is, in typical Adobe fashion (I've never been a fan since their fonts screwed up my Windows 3.11 installation:mad:), they've overcomplicated the download process; you can't just download the file, that would be too easy, no, you have to use the "Akamai download manager". Which doesn't seem to work through the LEA proxy:mad: (or with Opera, saying "this program only works in Windows" (even in pretend to be IE mode)) it just sits there at 0%, then pauses after a while:mad: I'm sitting at the end of a whacking great broadband connection - what do I need a download manager for? So... any suggestions? either of the "I've got it on a Celeron 1.8 with a gig of ram and it's fine" type, or suggestions of where to download it from without the silly download manager. Cheers

Seriously, do it - if the LEA have a problem with it (don't think they will - and I've done hundreds of Censuses - used to work on a SIMS helpdesk) they'll contact you then you can take the opportunity to ask them to track it down for you;) either way, problem solved!

You could always issue a temporary one to get the Census off, then worry about the correct one later. That's fine to do AFAIK

Yup, it's a bug that's been in SIMS .Net for ages. Something to do with one of the modules that SIMS is built out of not releasing memory after it's finished using it for editing a record. totally harmless and just a minor irritation really:rolleyes: Edit: It seems there is some advice for it now (not that I'm hopeful... I suspect you'll do the following and it'll still happen;)) Supportnet KB56887 (that's how old it is they're on KB90000-odd now)

For a while I had an (awful) Xerox network printer that did this - my pragmatic solution was to have a scheduled task running that restarted the spooler service every 10 mins IIRC... in the end it ended up connected to a workstation - then as soon as the warranty expired it died anyway:mad:

Thanks all, seems to be working OK now - I've no idea what changed; I just kept fiddling with the GPO settings until it worked, not that I've deliberately done much different to what I did in the first place:confused:

Happy New Year! As it's an InSeT day, and I've had two weeks of blue sky thinking time, I've got a quick question - someone HAS to have done it, surely?! Following a nasty virus outbreak last term, I'd like to run with firewalls up on the workstations to help prevent future problems, or at least make them easier to manage if we get one; security in layers and all that. Cutting to the chase, what do I need to set firewall exception wise in Group Policy to allow Sophos management console to work through the firewalls? anyone?
