Is anyone else having problems with their Tiscali connection at home at the moment? Everything was fine until about 6pm last night when the connection dropped. Rebooted the router, got an IP etc.... but there's something strange about the connection: Pinging bbc.co.uk (or anything else) works fine, websites lookup ok, but after 100kB or so opening pages grinds to a halt. Anyone else seen / seeing this? have tried Opera and IE - and another PC - same result. We're fed up of Tiscali, it's always dropping out etc and will move soon... but this is, well, different!

I just wondered what others out there did with regard to offsite server backups. Currently we're using a set of USB Hard drives - one set offsite and the other plugged in to the servers - swapped twice a week. There's also various other backups taken daily and stored on a couple of servers built with extra storage for the task. The USB drives are getting full and need replacing; I was just wondering what the alternatives were, pros and cons of them and what they approximately cost. I need to back up: Application server (DC) @ 140Gb file server 1 @ 280GB file server 2 @ 260GB finance server @ 150GB Sims / Staff server @ 470GB My knowledge is out of date in this area; Is tape still an option? or is there a better way?

It's barely network compatible either! to get it to work on the internal network I've had to (1) Install it (2) Download the patchy thing from their knowledgebase to resolve the first "white screen of death" issue (after which the splash page at the front works, followed by another WSOD) (3) Create a batch file to map a drive letter each time a user runs it as this "network compatible" software can't even cope with UNC paths for goodness sake! Won't work without a mapped drive letter... Hmmm.... not much chance of getting THAT to fly on Moodle then, have I?!

I believe when the auction's over, you get to send the winner an invoice, on which you can add as much P&P as you like. If it's included in the item description, I don't see there being a problem, but I agree it's a PITA and the ordinary postage bit should, well, just WORK!

Here's one out of left field - Do any of you know anywhere good (cheap) for getting digital photographs printed on eg. 2ft by 2ft canvas? I've been asked by our SLT to put some student photographs on the dining room wall like that:rolleyes: (just waiting for Simon from CPLTD to come along and say "we'll do em for a fiver fella":p;))

I've got Exploring Science 7, 8 and 9 uploaded to our new MOODLE (we joined the party late from Sharepoint). I've managed to get the ActiveBook working, by linking straight to activebook.swf, which is great. The issue is that none of the interactive content works. I've tried to get it working by linking to wrapper.swf (amongst others) but all I get is a white box with "100%" or "99%" in the top corner The content itself is fine - going straight to the .swf files in the content\ab folder and running them individually works - it's just that they won't run joined together. The "Go Interactive" button functionality doesn't work either - the icons appear but don't do anything when you click on them. Any ideas? anyone?

Many thanks to both of you, you've been a great help. It's not particularly the letters after my name that interests me as I don't plan to move jobs for a while (though never say never and all plans are subject to change), just the feeling that I'm, well not falling behind, but you know what I mean? and I think that doing a formal qualification may be a good way of polishing my skills. I'm probably going to go down the self study route first, as I've got a good chance of getting that funded.

I've got my PM meeting with the head today and I'd like to ask for some Microsoft training. I've never had any formal MS training apart from a 1-day SFE course on NT4 several years ago (though I have been a NM for 8 years and had a pretty good background knowledge before that). Day to day I get along fine, but I'm starting to feel a little out of date in certain areas (eg. AD!) and seem to be googling solutions more and more. The MS website is clear as mud - I looked at it yesterday... So: Where Do I Start? What are the options? and how much will it cost? and Where do I get it from? (by 11am please:drunken_smilie: I was going to post this yesterday but all hell broke loose!) Thanks in advance

if all else fails, do what I used to do on the helpdesk and start again. totally. from control panel, uninstall: sims applications, .net framework 1.1, and Sims infrastructure. Then run SIMSINST to put them back. Tedious I know, but it normally solves wierd problems like this:)

That's almost exactly what I've started to roll out here in the new laptop image. there's a folder on the C: drive called CpsWork where the staff are instructed to save anything they want backing up, then a script in the "All users" "startup" group to (robo)copy everything to a share I set up specially on the server called LaptopBackup. the script is "robocopy c:\cpswork \\servername\%computername% /r:0 /w:0 /s /mir" - using the %computername% means it works straight off the image There's no reason why you couldn't use this to sync to a folder on their home drive - apart from if I'd done that here the server would have fallen over with all the extra data....
