This one's climbing the charts: Adobe Premiere Elements - especially on Win 7 - seems totally unable to exist hapily in a network environment! (I've never trusted Adobe stuff ever since their true type fonts screwed up my Windows 3.11 installation when I was at sixth form - Gaaaah!)

You did remember to turn off the firewall (or enable the file and print sharing exception) on the machine the printer's plugged in to didn't you? Edit: Just read your original post again. Of course you did, or you wouldn't have been able to see the printer either

That could work... depends how much interference would creep in - that's why I was thinking more radio-mic frequency...

I'm not sure if what I want even exists - but if it doesn't, it should! Can you get a thingy that plugs into the headphones socket of a laptop (running a presentation in assembly, for example), that transmits the sound so that it can be picked up by a VHF or UHF radio mic reciever? it would save us an awfully long, noisy, usually knotted jack plug extension cable if you could.... Has anyone ever tried this with something like a guitar wireless system? Wonder if that'd do the job??? (runs off to find music teacher)

Normally would be too, but today it's been the Octavarium album by Dream Theater - If I can't get something to work, "Poison" by Alice Cooper often fixes it (really!)

I've got an order in for some 25m extension cables for the lighting desk in the hall. Just emailed finance to check they were ordered and got a reply "yes, they were ordered this week so they shouldn't be long" (you can see where this is going can't you?) I replied "I was rather hoping they would be long - long enough to reach the back of the hall anyway" [drum fill]

Some of my images are on their 3rd or 4th machine! I've got some IBM Thinkstations that think they're Toshiba laptops FFS (I admit I did that in a hurry though) works fine for me!

We're doing a slightly flashier school production this year (We Will Rock You - for those that haven't seen it it's a bit like Mamma Mia but with better music and a point:cool:) so I want to take the lighting desk out front, rather than being stuck in the wings with it. I therefore need to get hold of (or make up) some extension cables. Long story short: starter for 10 - what's this connector called? Bonus question - where can I get a 30m extension cable for them from?

We had that with our IBM fileserver a while ago - hot swap my @r5e!

I've just received the DVD that updates the e-testing software - there's no documentation with it, just a sticker on the box saying along the lines of "refer to the readme file on the DVD", which I did and it contains nothing of any use:rolleyes:. Is it just a case of backing up the i-assess folder, running setup.exe and pointing it at it?

My helpdesk's really simple; a forum on MOODLE (or any other VLE I've seen would work fine, too) on which I edit the thread names to include ***DONE***, ***MORE INFO***, ***SOLUTION ATTACHED*** etc. at the beginning. normally, we will also try and help non urgent "walk-ins", but if we're busy, we refer staff to the issue log (helpdesk) instead. That lets them see how busy you are and once they see that they're usually perfectly happy to log stuff and think none the less of you. Leaving fixed stuff on there with solutions is a good idea too, as it means that if you're snowed under staff can sometimes find their own solution without adding to your workload, and they're surprisingly happy to add a reply to a thread saying "fixed it for myself" or something, so the issue's still logged if you need to check back at any point.

also, is the upgrade running but failing, or not running at all? if it's running but failing you may need to run simsperm.bat (in the \\server\simsshare\sims\setups folder) on each workstation to enable them to update correctly. If it's not running at all it's usually either sims.ini as I said above or shortcuts pointing straight at c:\program files\sims\pulsar.exe rather than Simsload.exe first.

it's the "SIMSSetupsDirectory=" entry in the %systemroot%\sims.ini file that determines where they're looking for upgrades - is that set correctly on the affected workstations?

Please feel free to move this out of direct support and into one of the technical forums if it shouldn't be here - the problem is manifesting itself on the SMART side of things Most of our whiteboards in school are Promethean (one is a TDS!), however they are working fine. We have two Smartboards, however, that were also working fine. We recently bought a set of ActiVote handsets and I've deployed the latest ActivInspire and ActivDriver to all laptops via GPO to all teacher laptops so they can be used. Seemingly since then, one of the SmartBoards (the only one that's connected to a teacher laptop - the other one's connected to a desktop that wouldn't have got the ActiVote stuff) has been having "issues" such as pens not working as pens and SmartInk not working on Powerpoints. The question is, and I can't see how it would be, is it possible that the ActiVote software is conflicting with the SMART software in some way? AFAIK they are totally independent of each other? Surely? Aren't they? But then the evidence here MAY point to it happening. Has anyone else seen anything like this????
