If it's a CLEO school then you can probably get Sun Global Desktop access if you need it - get the school to contact them on your behalf and request it

Having a problem deploying the new Sophos automatically... Due to a bitter experience a couple of christmas's ago, we try to run with Windows firewalls up on as many workstations as possible, with exceptions configured by GPO for programs that need it, such as ABTutor and Sophos. This worked fine; I've got a startup script (via another GPO) that installs SAV in managed mode if it's not already on the machine, the machines then appear in the management console (V2) in the unassigned group - but even if they stay there they update fine. I've just set up the new management console on a new server and changed the script to install from the new server. The workstations get the new Endpoint Security software and update fine, but don't appear anywhere in the new management console. For the old version of Sophos, I opened ports 8192,8193 and 8194 to the IP of the management server - I've since opened them to the new server too, but even with the firewall off completely they still don't appear so it's not just that. I can't deploy automatically from the console either as the security on c:\windows\tasks is set to everyone:read (another virus prevention measure that I'm reluctant to remove). Any ideas how I get the workstations to appear in the new console without blowing holes in security?

Smoothwall Express keeps a log of what was accessed by which IP and when, and we're issuing static IPs to the Kindles, E-Pads etc. and we've connected it to our pupil filtered internet, so it's pretty much ok here

Well that's a first - I wonder if anyone can give me a nudge as to what's going on here: ONE of our 250 odd workstations (and it would have to be one that can't easilly just be reimaged wouldn't it?) cannot resolve (just) wwwcache.cleo.net.uk (the RBC web proxy), mail.cartmelpriory.cumbria.sch.uk or mail.cleo.net.uk; it can ping them given the IP address, but can't resolve them. I've tried ipconfig /flushdns, ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew as well as a good old fashioned reboot. Networking is otherwise fine and adding the above locations to the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file has fixed the problem for now, but what's causing it is still a mystery. The DNS settings are correct and DNS must be working and forwarding ok as the rest of the school is fine... Maybe it's something to do with solar flares... Edit: it's not a corrupt roaming profile either as it happens to both me (I've deliberately broken my profile so I get a temp one each time) and the usual user of the machine

We've got a big problem with ICT4Life level 3 [sarcastic][/sarcastic] Although all the students that have been set up (through that wonderful interface:rolleyes:) can log in, the teacher gets a message along the lines of "invalid username and password". Admin can log in, but gets the message along the lines of "please try submitting data later someone else is assessing that task at the moment". "Everyone" has full control of the whole folder (for troubleshooting) and I've tried deleting *.xml.lock in all subdirectories. I've also logged it on the Cambridge support forum (no response there yet). Anyone seen this before, please

ICT4Life :mad: and TERMS (used as MIS by our Adult Education office) - it's AWFUL - supports two printers, report and reciept, but breaks so that it tries to print reciepts to the report printer when it feels like it:mad::mad:

I think it depends alot on what the Head says - if your Head's on the ball like ours they would have knowledge, and copies, of e-safety policy etc. so that would be that box ticked and no need for the inspector to waste time interviewing the NM.

This appears to be great news for us too, 250 odd workstations and 40 or so staff It would be even better if FTE stood for what I thought it meant originally which is Full Time Equivalent (as seen in teaching job adverts) - what does it stand for in this case, just out of interest???

I'd check with your LEA - I think I read somewhere (can't remember where) that they hold certain licences on behalf of their schools???

Currently we have, doing sterling service, 1x Zone director 1000 and 6x zf2942 access points. I want to add another 3 APs - can I just buy them and plug them in? Edit: Quotes from suppliers are welcome but we won't be in a position to buy until April (and the way things are going......)

Not seen it either, but ... isn't that one of the lampless ones? I take it you've checked the cable? (worth a look if not) Otherwise, it sounds like a problem with either the internal processing gatgetrymabob, or one of the light sources going on the blink, in either case a warranty claim

Doesn't it mean Vista upwards supports wired and wireless, XPSP3 supports wired (only), XPSP2 downwards supports nothing? Can anyone clear this up before I put the 2008R2 Schema on my servers to find out?

Hmm... looking like RADIUS might be the only way, and tbh I'll have to have a think about if it's worth it:confused: Tried this - At least 80 keys are created / modified / deleted when you connect to a wireless network, and the (WPA) key's nowhere in sight probably encrypted somewhere in the registry-puke that regshot threw out (neat little utility though I must say ) This looked promising till I got to this bit: The wireless bit doesn't work on XPSP3

As some have noted, sysprep removes wireless keys so one of the final parts of our laptop reimaging procedure is to put the key back in. Also, I'd like to be able to centrally change the key if it's discovered... so how do you do it? Ruckus:cool: allows me to create multiple SSIDs, each with different encryption methods if I want to, so running "old" and "new" SSIDs and keys isn't an issue whatsoever, in fact as usual Ruckus is not the problem. In creating the GPO, however, things are less straightforward: I've found the bit where you create a new wireless network policy, but can't see anywhere to put the key, that and the WPA settings don't match up with anything in Ruckus:confused: Can someone give me a nudge in the right direction?
