Paranoid about SIMS and FMS being time bombed
Jawloms replied to Wirral_Wonderer's topic in MIS Systems
We moved away from FMS in February, FMS is still accessible. We just can't perform any upgrades to it so it's two version out now. -
Just had another. The PC has been in use throughout the day, suddenly no internet access. No websites would load in any browser. Tried to ping 8.8.8.8 and got a sensible response. Wasn't in front of EduGeek so forgot the stop and start thing. Pressed "Start", typed PROXY and pressed enter. While the PROXY settings window was appearing, the browser in the background loaded the webpage I had attempted to get to with without me telling it to. Weirdness......

DDOS - the computing curriculum, and filtering
Jawloms replied to sigma's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I think the issue here partly is that if the NCA are of the opinion it should be blocked, we shouldn't just outright go against that without a conversation first. This is that conversation. -
That's the one which typically makes the icon in the system tray mis-report. These three actually wouldn't access the internet.
-
I'll try the suggestions next time we get one, thank you. Stuart

We are using LTSC. Sorry I wasn't clear - I don't mean the indicator, it actually had no Internet access until opening the PROXY settings screen.

Morning all, Windows 10 1809. We've had three PCs in the last week who are presenting as not having internet access, but then the second you open the PROXY settings (not doing anything with them, just opening the window) it then all works! One was trying to access YouTube using Chrome, and then other two were both trying to host a TeamViewer session. Anyone else seen this? Stuart

I quite enjoyed Resurrections, but Bill & Ted......... Wow! That was truly awful.... -
End of last week we edited our academic year to allow for yesterday's bank holiday. After 15 minutes of SIMS apparently applying it and no-one else being able to use SIMS we crashed it out. I then ran it on the server with no-one else connected Saturday morning. It took three hours! Anyone else or just us for some reason? Stuart

OK, thanks. She's a cover teacher so she wanted to go in to all Teams "in case". I'll put her in but warn her it may be slow......

We don't use the client, we get everyone to use it browser based. Does it affect performance in there too?
-
Thanks for that, but it's connecting to Exchange online which we don't currently use. I set all my Teams up using Import-Module MicrosoftTeams and Connect-MicrosoftTeams. Would it still work using Exchange online commands for me?

I need to add a user to a couple of hundred teams. Anything I Google just comes back with adding multiple users to A team, which is round the wrong way. I've had a go at editing an existing script but just couldn't get the syntax correct. I have all the Teams I need her in, in a CSV file. Thank you Stuart

Thanks for this. I'll go Class Teacher as you suggest and wind it in. I usually like to be most restrictive and then loosen permissions if needed, but I'm going to have to give slightly broader and then tighten this time by the looks of it. I usually find this spreadsheet very useful, but not on this occasion! It states that an external auditor can do what I want. They can't. There were other oddities too...

O365 - Teams and moving to new Classes for the year
Jawloms replied to Warwick_Tech's topic in Cloud Services
We rename any teams which are going to be used the following year. Powershell scripts are wonderful! -
Hi all, I'm really struggling here. Our SLT would like a couple of chaplains we have to be able to log in to SIMS .net, view student's very basic details (names, DOB, pronouns, probably about it), and see their timetable so they can go find them in a lesson for a chat. I just can't get it to work. I can't see an appropriate builtin group, and picking your own bits is an absolute minefield! Anyone any ideas please? Thank you Stuart

We run Impero so a lot of stuff is on a timeout shutdown, but then we have a script which runs the shutdown command for every single computer name in AD on a Friday evening.

Elton John has bought his pet rabbit a treadmill. It's a little fit bunny.

I'm after a report from SIMS .net which will give me all the classes, who is in them, and who the teacher is. I can find various reports which will give me parts of that info, but not one which will give me all of it in one place! Anyone know please? Thank you Stuart

Thanks all for your feedback, much appreciated.

Anyone doing it? Does it work? Is it cost effective? Was it easy to set up? We're still running our phone system over 2x ISDN2 lines so are looking at proper VOIP solutions and as we already use Teams quite a bit, it seems only sensible to check it out. Can you buy handsets which work with it for when a visitor says "Could I just make a quick call?" type situation? Stuart
