We get a paper file from our direct federated infant school as well as their CTF. When we get a pupil from external we usually only get a CTF, we sometimes then get a paper file if there is something remarkable about the pupil - usually if there is significant SEN or Pastoral input. When we send kids to senior school we only send CTF as a matter of course. Kids with SEN or Pastoral support transferring locally: the pastoral workers from all the local schools have a big meeting and do paper file transfers between the schools then.

They are pricey - my Infant school uses them and whilst they are robust, they have a bit of an achilles heel - the cable is a 3.5mm jack-jack lead and I spend an inordinate amount of time pulling snapped jacks out of the sockets so the cable can be replaced and they can continue to be used.

There are a million other largely illegible fonts out there already. Why would I want to make another one?

My old school used to get those... We bought 90 odd of them and at least half didn't last a month.

I've been getting the same back - I've managed to actually sit down with one of the people who says she can't open them and she's trying to open the attachment that comes with the message instead of clicking the 'read this message online' button which allows her to request an 1 time access code. If she does that it works like a charm.

My SCCM server also hosts WSUS and KMS. Works very nicely.

Direct access work currently but is becoming an unsupported technology. they may choose to turn it off in an update - probably without warning. One site uses a combination of offline files - it's a PITA - and DirectAccess which works generally quite well. The other site currently enforce a UYODAH system - Use Your Own Device At Home - Via RDS. Seems to be working fine. Literally, 3 members of staff have laptops on that site. The site that uses laptops with offline files will cease to to do that when there machines go over to windows 10, they'll initially get DirectAccess but eventually I'll be phasing out laptops altogether as they die and going to fixed desktops. Stopping using laptops for teachers has saved so much money and grief as they are both rough with them and a bit dim!

Will they be releasing an updated set of GPO to allow this for some and disable it for others? I want my office staff to be able to do this and my students to categorically not!

Fibre for preference, but I understand that the purse strings won't always let you have what's best. I think you you could quite happily do a few runs of copper and trunk them and they'll be fine. Most of my school runs on trunked multiple copper links because it's cheap, I can do them in house and the distances aren't long.

Another +1 for the VDV 2. I've got the Pro kit personally and work have been cajoled into buying the Plus kit.

It seems to be worse on certain builds of w10. I am not seeing it at all (so far) on any of our 1709 or 1803 machines. It seems much worse on 1703 build 15063.1088 and virtually non existent on 1703 build 15063.1155. Adding the DLLHOST exclusion to Impero has helped a lot though.

Vida (now TSO) Host who charge a fiver to do the transfer and then free forever - Our renewal date is 01/01/2200. We've just moved another pair of domains to them - a .co.uk and a .net and they've agreed to DNS manage those for free too, all we have to do is pay the 9.99 and 4.99 domain namerenewal fees when they come up some when next year. The whole lot was done in about 40 minutes. They've just been so utterly hassle free.

Not if you paid me to. We have GSuite for the kids and governors so they can collaborate, and Office365 for the staff. We can actually control those properly. I'm not keen on GSuite so I'm going to move them all to Office365 in 12 months time anyway - mainly so we can start using Windows Private Store apps.
