I use outlook.com as the service is good and it's compatible with both Windows 10 Mail and Outlook. It works nicely on my phone's Outlook client, too. I have a personal domain and tie that in so that my e-mail looks personalised.

I'm in this morning - the only person here although I'm expecting someone else later. Think we'll enjoy a coffee and wrap up around midday.

I'm trying to get a long DKIM key into our local DNS as a TXT field and it keeps truncating it. No such problem with the public DNS. Is there a way of increasing the AD DNS TXT length limit?

We use PaperCut. Students are given a reasonable amount of credit at the start of the year. If they run out, they can buy more and that is put on the school bill as a recharge. Staff are given a reasonable amount of credit at the start of the year. Their usage is recharged to their cost centre each term. If they run out, they must ask the bursar for more credit, which is recharged against their cost centre and subtracts from budget allocated for other costs. In other words, the bursar punishes those who overspend by reducing what else they can buy (books etc.) We have developed this process over a couple of years to reduce the huge amount of wastage by both students and staff. I have also enabled print-on-collect at all the copiers to further reduce wastage from uncollected printouts.

Oh agreed, I wasn't advocating Mail for corporate use. We use Outlook too.

I use the Mail app for my personal outlook.com account. What's wrong with it? Works perfectly fine for me.

You don't install RSAT any more. You go to Settings | Apps | Manage optional features. Strangely, Group Policy doesn't seem to have been included.

The only way to follow the guidelines to 'manage' 3G/4G use is to appeal to parents, which I do every time I give a talk to them. I ask them to ensure that they have a teenage filter applied by the service provider and warn them of the evil nature of Snapchat. I suggest (but can do no more than that) that they remove the Snapchat app from their childrens' phones. As far as the wi-fi is concerned, Snapchat is blocked for all, including staff. However, I'd like to have the DSL more onside as she thinks Snapchat is ok really. WTF? Now, of course, Instagram seems to be taking over as the medium of unacceptable behaviour. The ISI are very much like Ofsted and encourage us to allow more communications with parents. We are a boarding school with international pupils so that's important.

1709 and 1803 had gone without a hitch, so we just let updates go through the approval process in WSUS. I'll probably change that now...

I have disabled the Group Policy “Delete user profile older than a specified number of days” for the time being, as there is a finger of suspicion pointing at this.

As I said above. The feature update has gone through our WSUS server and updated many machines already. Many profiles lost.

The 1809 update appears to wipe the user profile. It also loses all Store apps like Spotify and Photoshop. Not a great start.

YouTube/Google safesearch enforced. YouTube allowed to seniors (Y11 upwards) at all times. For juniors, allowed only outside of lesson times.

We allow most social media apps but some are problematic and even behave differently between iOS and Android. They each require research to find the right URL and firewall settings. There is no way we'll ever allow Snapchat, Kik or the like through our network!

Embrace W10, it works differently. Review every GPO. Try to come off any W7 customisations, they don't coexist well. Don't try to control the Start menu or taskbar, they don't want to be. GPO necessary icons onto the desktop. Update your WSUS but exclude drivers. Get rid of third party AV, Defender works well. Set overnight restarts for computer suite machines to allow them to update. In time you will see how much more self-managing W10 is, not to mention tremendously more secure. Your fleet of machines will settle down and remain up to date and more stable than W7.

Yes, I'm just using the webmail interface for now. Mail has become a lot better and I use it at home without issue. Something has happened between Microsoft and Smoothwall to stop it from working.

I reset them as they come through (usually from a student's personal e-mail) and ask them to change it when they return in September.

Managed service with very high uptime but no bolt-ons. We do all our own filtering. It's Exponential-e.

Being an independent school I cannot afford 1Gbps. I'm paying just over £800/mo for 300Mbps.

It stopped working a couple of weeks ago through our Smoothwall firewall. Nothing has changed our end so there must be new URLs or ports that require allowing through. Any ideas? Once I take my Surface home, the mail comes in fine so it's not a client issue.
