We have a few NP300 (which I think are virtualy identical to the NP305), they drop straight in. Same size, same throw. The only different is the serial connector and serial command set. Since we use AMX control panels this has meant they've needed reprogramming.

Hopefully a nice easyone. I've got an Ubuntu 10.4 server VM. I made a clone of it so I could do some testing. When I fire up the clone Eth0 has disapeared (I'm guessing because the MAC address has changed), how do I get Unbuntu to redetect it.

Angry I.P. scanner will scan a whole range of I.P.s and resolve a host name and MAC address (you have to enable this). It might also be worth checking for odd entries on your DHCP server. It might also be worth checking to see what the default I.P. address is for those switches it. The problem with this is the defualt address probably won't be in your I.P. range, and all the switches will be using the same address. Do the switches have serial ports?

Have a look at this tool; Process Monitor It should tell you which files the programs are trying to access. As for FAT32, I've only seen it on post 98 kit in two situations. One where machines had been upgraded from 98. The other was on my own PC when I had a multiboot setup, Win98, Win2k (twice!) and Red Hat.

All the above is good stuff, another thing to check is that the DHCP client service hasn't been disabled. EDIT: I missed the bit about working with a static, sounds like a bad card or a driver problem. Sling in a Linux Live disk and see if the networking works.

Who's provided the laptop, have the parents paid for them or have they been provided by the LEA? If it's the LEA I'd query it with them.

Given the senario I'd start by testing the connection with another PC. Have you double checked the wiring. I spend ages on a problem here, the previous tech had made the same wiring mistake on both ends of a connection (he'd put the 4 pairs next to each other instead of placing one middle pair inside the other), it tested fine on a dumb tester but wouldn't carry any data. If the PC is ancient try forcing the switch down to 100m/b.

It could be worse, we've just bought a clipbank. It cost about £7000, you can't even upload your own stuff to it. That did however include an 'engineer' to unbox it and set the IP address.

OP software's MyLittleHelpdesk (which is now called something else). I think they offer a hosted version, which might well be easier to scale across sites. EDIT: Now with boss linkage and added fibre. http://www.opsoftware.net/ It would seam it's now called OPSmartdesk.

1.8 would be very close. The closest lense I've even seen is a 14mm. 1.8 is almost certainly the appeture, since it's quite a common appeture on entry level prime lenses.

A 1.8 lens????? I'm guessing you're looking at the 50mm 1.8. That lens won't auto focus on the D3000, you need to be looking out for AFS lenses. Unless you're happy to focus manualy. The only AFS 50mm is very expensive, there is an AFS 35mm 1.8, it's about £200.
