It might actualy be counter productive, by the look of that remote you have to switch it between the different functions. When we last used a universal remote my folks could never understand that the remote needed to be switched from controling the VCR to controlling the TV. Logitech do some remotes where one button can be programmed to perform several actions.

We've got one, not using routing at the minute, but it's an excellent switch. The one thing that irks me is you have to have POE which when twinned with gigabit is fairly expensive feature. I'm sure they could make a non POE version much cheaper if they wanted.

I've never tried using anyone elses, but HP's paper work very clearly states that you must use HP mini gbics. As for HP stuff, we've got loads of it. Doesn't give very many issues, although we have had 2 POE switches die recently. EDIT: Just checked, the mini gbics I'm using are J4858C

And you need SQL 2008, NOT SQL 2008 r2. I know of a school who ended up rebuilding their SIMS server after making that mistake.

I would be talking to the union, a spend like this must have been discussed at many levels. The idea the having this dumped on you without any consultation is ridiculous. Unless you have a very big team there's no way you'll be able to absorb the extra workload these laptops will present.

If you bought the installation and projector together and it's failed after only a few months you don't need to bother. Once you've made sure it's not any of the equipment you provided or something really simple like a cable I'd just past it straight on to the suppliers.

Weather it's worth the cost is entirely down to how much you think you can cut down your printing with it. That's the brilliant thing, it's there to save you money so it's very easy to judge how much it's worth. Pykota is a free tool that is often mentioned on here, however it's Linux based a bit of a steep learning curve. There's also Papercut logger which just keeps a log of print jobs, however it might be a good start in gathering statistics and proving you need to put something more powerful in place. We've just invested about £600 in Papercut NG, since our current printing bill is over £21k it'll only take a small reduction to pay back the cost.

Ultimate is the most expensive, enterprise is basicaly the same as business. You will need enterprise, business or ultimate (or Vista/XP business) to use them on a domain, there's no getting round that. Do you have a Microsoft select agreement, some of them cover upgrading to business weight OS.

As people have said for meter thick walls you need something substantial, which will then be OTT for normal use and driving screws. Get a sensible recharable driver drill for all the normal stuff, moutning wall boxes and APs. Then get a big mains powered bugger for your meter thick walls (or if it's only something you're going to do once hire one). We've got a couple of Ryobis here that arn't bad, I've also got a Hitachi at home which is good. If you want something dirt cheap my dad has a Clarke drill, which considering what it cost wasn't bad. I'm thinking of getting one to replace my Metabo. Why replace the Metabo, well it's older then me and my dad's loonatic landlord fixed it with brushes from a blender.

At my last school the headteacher wanted to get 15 whiteboards installed (plus a few other projector only and whiteboard only installs), and assumed we'd be about to get it done during the winter half term which was only about 3 weeks away. When told there was no chance of getting contractors in decided we could do it all during a normal school week. Half way through Tuesday the network manager went home and said he wouldn't come back till next week. The best bit was we couldn't get an electrician in till the Christmas holidays, so none of the projectors had any power. EDIT: We did have a trainee teacher go AWOL.

Oh god, we've got a teacher from France doing a years placement with us, I just hope she's relatively technical and speaks good English. She's hoping to do conferences every week, which I told the MFL bunch is realistic. I didn't count on having to work around the local politicians.

Have you spoken to you local rbroadband consortium. They probably offer a VC service and might have some input on what works well (although if they recommend Microsoft Netmeeting ignore them, it's medievil).
